New easing of restrictions

The government has extended the curfew to midnight and is letting foreigners dine in Monegasque restaurants, however it has stopped short of lifting mandatory masks outdoors.
In its two-weekly assessment of the health measures in force in Monaco, the government on Wednesday took further steps to lift restrictions currently in play.
The curfew has been moved back to midnight, while restaurant patrons have an additional 15 minutes to return home.
The wearing of masks remains mandatory outdoors, despite a call from the National Council to remove the measure.
Restaurants are allowed to welcome customers from the Alpes-Maritimes department in France and Liguria in Italy as far as San Remo. The number of guests allowed per table has been increased to eight, and table spacing has been reduced from 1.5 to 1 metre.
There are no restrictions on the opening times of cafés.
Working from home is no longer mandatory, however it is still strongly encouraged.
“Employers and employees must use common sense to assess what should be implemented in the company,” said the government in its communication.
The new measures take effect from Saturday 12th June.

Eileen Gray’s villa reopens after full restoration

Admirers of Anglo-Irish designer Eileen Gray are invited to visit her masterpiece in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, Villa E-1027, which has been painstakingly and lovingly restored to its former glory.
It is Eileen Gray’s first architectural creation, built between 1926 and 1929. It has many of the features still attributed to the ‘Modern architecture’ of today, including a flat roof, an L-shape layout, open plan design and floor to ceiling windows that take full advantage of the spectacular sea views from its hillside perch.
The villa is small by today’s standards, but Gray thought that everyone “must be able to remain free and independent”, and this meant being able to store everything in a minimum of space. So, she created elegant, functional furniture in which no detail was too small.
The architects and experts in charge of restoring Villa E-1027 and its interior – Claudia Devaux, Renaud Barrès, Burkhardt Rukschcio and Philippe Deliau – were expected to recreate a setting that resembled as closely as possible that which was imagined and accomplished by Eileen Gray in 1929.

Long after Gray left the villa in 1932, fellow architect and rival Le Corbusier spent a few weeks there in 1937, 1938 and 1939. In April 1938, encouraged by Jean Badovici, he painted two murals in the villa, and returned the following year to paint another five. He wrote “I am dying to dirty the walls: ten compositions are ready, enough to daub the whole lot.”
According to her biographers, Eileen Gray didn’t think much of these paintings. In 1949 Badovici threatened to remove them. Several paintings that had been damaged during the war were restored by Le Corbusier himself in 1949 and again in 1963. Three of them however have disappeared. Those that remain have been restored. Although the painting in the living room has been cached to preserve the integrity of Eileen Gray’s vision.
Failing to buy the property himself, he purchased adjoining lands and built the Cabanon Le Coubusier, another modern masterpiece, along with the Camping Units and the Etoile de Mer.

Owned by the Conservatoire du Littoral, the entire site is named Cap Modern and was opened to the public in 2015. All structures have since been gradually restored and it is the only site in the Alpes-Maritime that is inscribed on the UNESCO world heritage list, welcoming more than 10,000 visitors per year.
The restoration project has been a labour of love using funds from the Cap Moderne Association, in conjunction with the town of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, PACA, and the Ministry of Culture of the Department of Regional Cultural Affairs.

The sites are now open to the public for guided visits, which can be obtained by reservation on the website www.capmoderne.com

All-female art exhibition

Four local photographers, all women, will be featured in an upcoming exhibition at L’Entrepot Gallery entitled ‘Through the Lens’, giving visitors a uniquely feminine view of the world-at-large.
From 12th to 17th June, the latest exhibit by L’Entrepot Gallery, in partnership with Art-Box.Store, will feature an all-female line-up of photographers from Monaco and France.
Using their chosen art form, the four artists – Kathrin Hoyos, Jilly Bennett, Bolonie Shuhaibar and Lisa de Rea Frederiksen, look at nature, places, people and animals from their own distinctive perspectives, finding beauty and grace in the every day.
German born, Greek and Belgian-bred, Katherin Hoyos studied to be an architect before moving to South Africa in the 90’s. It was here that she took classes to hone her skills. She moved to Monaco in 2012 with her family and has taken her hobby to the next level, making it her passion.
Jilly Bennett has combined her love of dogs and her love of photography to create beautiful images of man’s best friend in striking ways. Bennett was a breeder and exhibitor of Old English Sheepdogs before moving to the South of France where she has collected strays and abused dogs, giving them the love they deserve. Her passion for her dogs and her work is clear, working in perfect tandem together.
Bolonie Shuhaibar “seeks to awaken this search for the beautiful and the pure that we so readily find in nature”. She is a photographer, painter and watercolour artist who focuses on nature’s beauty and bounty to great effect.
Lisa de Rea Frederiksen got her first camera at the tender age of 10 and hasn’t looked back since. “I capture what captures my heart. I capture beauty,” the artist says on her website, photographing landscapes, street scenes, nature, interiors and locations. This broad spectrum allows her work to fluid and charming in the extreme.
Renowned portrait and dance photographer and author of The New York Times bestsellers Dancers In As and Born to Dance Jordan Matters, will be featured as a special guest at the exhibition.
Additionally, on Saturday afternoon of opening day, a musical performance by players from the Monaco International Performing Arts Centre (MIPAC) and Golden Voices Monaco will be on hand to further delight crowds.

Roca team back on track in Gravelines

The Roca team have found their mojo once again after a three game losing streak, defeating BCM Gravelines-Dunkerque on their opponent’s home turf.

AS Monaco Basketball made the journey to France’s northernmost region, Hauts-de-France, where they went up against BCM Gravelines-Dunkerque and broke their losing streak beating them 91 to 74.

The win has boosted the spirits of the team and fans alike, and brings them within one victory of securing their place in the Jeep Elite top 4, thus giving them a home court advantage in the first game of the quarterfinals.

The game was nowhere near a foregone conclusion, though, as the Roca team struggled the first quarter to gain a foothold. When the buzzer went off, they were trailing 17 to 22, and it wasn’t until the second quarter that Monaco was able to take the lead, when JJ O’Brien launched one into the net, giving the Roca team a slim 28 to 27 edge.

The lead didn’t last long though, and BCM once again took control, but by the end of the first half, ACM had clawed their way back and had a tiny one shot lead.

After returning from the locker room, they kicked into gear. With Team Captain Dee Bost leading the charge, the Roca team’s magic was in full effect, and by the end of the third, they had a solid and comfortable lead, outgunning their opponents 30 points to 15 in the quarter.

The final quarter was an even draw, and enough to keep Monaco right where they wanted to be. In the end, they walked away with a heartening 91 to 74 win.

“We showed our true face, especially on the defensive pressing, to dominate this meeting,” said rear guard Adboulaye Ndoye after the match. “Our goal is to finish in the Top 4. We wanted to bounce back from three straight losses. Here in Gravelines, I always see nice friends. My dad played here, it’s a special place for me.”

High scorer of the game was Dee Bost, who had 19 points, followed closely by Rob Gray with 18. Brenden Frazier and Damien Inglis were next up with eight a piece.

Monaco made 36 shots out of 69 attempts, going eight for 24 in the three-point range. They had 25 rebounds, 15 assists, with Bost accounting for six of them, nine steals and recovered six stray balls.

The boys return home now for a game against BBD Boulazac-Perigord on Saturday, before taking on Nanterre away on Monday.

ASM eSports take second in European eFootball

AS Monaco Esports have been crowned European runners-up after a superb run in the final stages of eFootball.Pro.
For the quarterfinal, AS Monaco Esports were pitted against Arsenal, which swung back and forth but managed to balance out as the two teams split the points during qualification. And that’s exactly what happened in the first game, which ended 2-2 thanks to goals from Kilzyou and Usmakabyle.
On the strength of their experience, it was the Monegasques who took the upper hand in the second leg with a comfortable victory of 2-0, allowing them to reach the semifinals.
In the semifinals, Imad Mihoudi’s men were up against AS Roma. Second in the table during the regular season, this game also promised to be very exciting. In the end, it turned out not to be, as the ASM trio showed great efficiency, both offensively and defensively.
Without ever looking like losing control, they won twice, each time by a score of 1-0. Both wins came thanks to goals from captain Usmakabyle, both in the first half.
Having qualified for the final, AS Monaco Esports faced off against Juventus, who had finished first in the regular season. At the start of the match, it was the Italians who took the lead with a goal scored in the 12th minute. The Red and Whites, full of confidence, came back in the second half thanks to a penalty scored by Kilzyou.
The two teams didn’t manage to create any separation between themselves and the match went into overtime. Unfortunately, Juventus gained the upper hand and won 3-1. Despite this defeat in the final, Monaco eSports once again showed that they are one of the best teams in Europe and Kilzyou, Lotfi and Usmakabyle can be proud of their magnificent run.
