Resilient nature of coral reefs highlighted in new report

As Monaco handed over the chair of the International Coral Reef Initiative to the US, a new report revealed that 14% of coral reefs have disappeared since 2009. But there is hope if drastic action is taken.
After a three-year mandate, Monaco, Australia and Indonesia passed on their Joint Presidency to the United States of America, one of the founding members of the International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) alongside the Principality.
The virtual ceremony was an opportunity to take stock of the results of an action plan adopted by the ICRI in 2018, a plan based on four tenets: to promote effective solutions to improve the protection of coral reefs, to understand the evolution of coral reefs, to improve understanding of the live reef fish trade for food, and to reduce anthropogenic threats to coral reefs.
As a result, policy makers have been made aware of the ecological, social and economic values of coral reefs and the cumulative threats they face.
Meanwhile, the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN) officially presented its sixth report at the meeting, the largest ever analysis of the health of coral reefs around the world.
It showed that in the last decade, the world lost about 14% of its coral reefs, with ocean-acidification, warmer sea temperatures and local stressors such as overfishing, pollution, unsustainable tourism and poor coastal management posing a combined threat to the coral ecosystems.
The GCRMN report was drawn from a global dataset gathered by over 300 members of the network covering four decades from 1978 to 2019. It had almost two million observations from more than 12,000 sites in 73 reef-bearing countries across the globe.
In underlying the catastrophic consequences of global warming, the report also shows that many coral reefs around the world remain resilient and can rebuild themselves if conditions allow.
In 2019, the world regained two per cent of its coral cover in spite of a short interval between mass coral bleaching events in the last decade.
These instances point to the fact that these critical ecosystems have the capacity to recover if pressure on them eases, the researchers noted. They can even resuscitate to their pre-1998 health in the next 10 years, the report mentioned.
While chair of the ICRI, several Monegasque entities were assembled under the direction of Bernard Fautrier, Special Advisor on environmental issues to Prince Albert. They included the Prince Albert II Foundation and the Department of External Relations and Cooperation, while the Scientific Centre of Monaco contributed significantly to the work concerning reef restoration.
Another result of Monaco’s commitment was the 2020 launch of the World Coral Reef Fund by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and the Paul G. Allen Foundation, which many states have since supported.

Mirazur enters World's Best hall of fame

Mirazur’s Mauro Colagreco has conceded top spot in the World’s 50 Best Restaurants to Copenhagen’s Noma, with the three-starred restaurant now assuming its position in the Best of the Best category.
Mirazur in Menton was handed the coveted crown for The World’s Best Restaurant in 2019, an accolade which continued into 2020 after the award was postponed due to the pandemic.
During a ceremony on Tuesday 5th October in Antwerp, the crown was given to Chef and Co-owner of Noma René Redzepi, who led 12 team members to the stage to collect the most important prize in global gastronomy.

Argentinian Mauro Colagreco had steadily risen through the ranks of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list since Mirazur’s debut at No. 35 in 2009.
In 2019, the year his restaurant took top spot, the rules changed to specify that top ranking restaurants could never be considered on the list again. Instead, they would celebrate their ranking in a new category, Best of the Best.
Despite holding No. 1 position in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2014, the new iteration of Noma, sometimes referred to as Noma 2.0, was eligible for The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list due to three changes from the original restaurant: its location, concept and ownership. As such, it is considered a new restaurant and this year climbed from the No. 2 position. Taking 2021’s second spot is Geranium, also in Copenhagen, Denmark, and coming in third is Asador Etxebarri in Atxondo, Spain.
Only three French restaurants made the top 50 this year – all in Paris and all downgraded in the list. L’Arpege dropped from 9th to 23rd place, Septime was demoted from 15th to 24th, while Yannick Alleno’s Pavillon Ledoyen went from 25th to 41st.
In addition to Mirazur in Menton, Mauro Colagreco is establishing a strong presence in the Principality with Komo and BYO Traiteur Monaco. He is also heading up two restaurants in the new Maybourne Riviera hotel, which cradles the mountainside above the Principality.

Roca team trounced by Metropolitans

AS Monaco suffered a big loss against Boulogne-Levalllois’s Metropolitans in the second match of this season’s Betclic Elite games, plunging them to 12th place in the standings with an 81 to 108 final score.

You can’t win ‘em all.

The Roca team, on the road for the second of three straight away games, was crushed by the Metropolitans of Boulogne-Levalllois at the Palais des Sports Marcel-Cerdan on Monday night 81 to 108.

This heavy loss may be partly due to Coach Zvezdan Mitrovic’s decision not to play Will Thomas, Donta Hall, and Paris Lee, but mostly, it came down to the Metros playing more aggressive basketball.

The opponents opened scoring and it just went downhill from there. Monaco spent the entirety of the game behind the eight ball, ending the first quarter a full 12 points down. By half time, the Roca’s had conceded a whopping 59 points, going into the locker room 17 points behind,

The second half didn’t see huge improvements, despite some fantastic plays by the team. Their offense simply didn’t gel the way it should have and it showed their weaknesses in technicolour.

Monaco made 29 shots out of 59 going five for 19 in three-point range. They had 26 rebounds with 16 assists. They stole the ball six times and recuperated 16 strays.

Mike James was high scorer with a huge 22 points to his credit. Ibrahima Fall Faye was next up with 12 points, followed by Donatas Motiejunas with 11.

The team faces off against the Kazan Unics for Euroleague action on Friday night in the last of three away games.
