Monaco streamlines Covid tests and vaccinations

With an uptick in the circulation of Covid, the government has made screening and vaccinations in Monaco easier for the population.

The Covid situation report issued by the government on Monday revealed that Monaco had recorded 287 new cases and 49 new hospitalisations within the week.

To help combat this new wave of the virus, the government has adjusted its policies on testing and inoculations to allow the easiest access for all people who live, work or go to school in the Principality.

Monegasque nationals and residents can again visit the Rainier III Auditorium Screening Centre on weekdays between 8:30am and 5pm without an appointment for a Covid test. Employees and non-resident children who attend school in Monaco can also get tested, though they must present a medical prescription.

Appointments can also be made online at www.monacosante.mc. These online screening slots are open to Monegasques, residents, employees and non-resident children attending school in the Principality.

The exception is for patients aged five to 11, who must visit www.vaccination-covid19.mc and request to be called back for an appointment to ensure the proper parental authorisation procedures are followed.

The health authorities are “strongly advising” people over 60 and those at high-risk of developing a more serious form of the disease to get a 4th dose, or second booster, of the vaccine. The booster is voluntary and free of charge.

Monaco’s health services have two vaccines available, one carrying messgeger RNA made by Pfizer and one without messenger RNA manufactured by Novavax.

James Bunce: “We’re preparing for a sprint within a marathon”

Monaco Life sat down with AS Monaco Performance Director James Bunce to discuss the club’s pre-season preparations, as well as their modern, data-informed approach, which is yielding elite-level results.

AS Monaco’s 10-game unbeaten run towards the end of last season remains large in the rear-view mirror, but preparations for next season’s gruelling campaign are in full swing, with a potentially season-defining game less than a fortnight away. Bunce spoke about that run and how the club endeavours to pick up where they left off.

Monaco Life: To what do you attribute the club’s sharp rise in form towards the end of last season?

James Bunce: The work under Niko Kovac’s time here was really important to building a culture of changing the philosophy of how we work. He was really good at building a basic level of physicality that we could build upon. The biggest change came with the change of head coach. He had a very modern approach to physical development, around what is required in training in order for it to be replicated in the matches.

In January until the end of the season, there was a big change in our focus for sprinting, sprint development, training harder, training smarter, especially with players that weren’t playing. We focus on the whole 25, not just the starting level, which was the next step we knew we needed to take. The challenge for Philippe Clement, and for us, was trying to build that in-season, whilst still playing in three competitions at the time, without causing big injuries, without losing lots of games to the point that it becomes irrelevant what you’re doing physically. That was the big challenge. It was like a pre-season within a season when Philippe arrived.

On a technical level, the arrival of Clement seems to have been a turning point. What is it like working with him and what are his strengths?

He’s a logical thinker, he’s super detailed and he’s super open to collaboration. My job, and everyone else’s job, is to try to provide him with information to make his team more successful. But he has to also be able to make the decisions that he needs to make from a technical, tactical, and mental perspective. So, it’s all about collaboration.

I didn’t know this when I met him, but he’s an engineer by background. He built and designed his own house, so he’s very good with detail. He’s very good at picking numbers and building a process to reach an endpoint and that perfectly aligns with how you need to think about training. He is genuinely the best coach I’ve seen at trying to build those blocks and build them on an individual pathway, because not everyone can do the same training.

You’re constantly building these blocks, but they are also constantly in movement. Philippe has an unbelievable mind to get it right and ask the right questions: ‘What’s enough? What’s not enough?’. That’s where his magical talent lies. On top of that, he’s an unbelievable technician of the game as well.

In press conferences towards the end of the season, Monaco players such as the recently-departed Aurélien Tchouaméni spoke about their physical superiority relative to their opponents. During the 2019/20 season, across Europe’s top five leagues, Monaco ranked 76th in terms of total distance covered, 85th in high speed running, 39th in sprint distance and 88th in accelerations. Domestically, their physical statistics are probably best described as un-noteworthy. The club was ranked 10th in all of the aforementioned categories, except for sprint distance, where they ranked third.

Across Europe’s top five divisions last season, Monaco ranked third in all categories, apart from accelerations, where they rank 23rd.  Domestically, they are unrivalled; Monaco come out top in every category. As a performance director, that must validate the work you do?

That was the biggest validation: that opposition managers and our own players were talking about the physical advantage that they felt we had. We didn’t know the numbers were going to be third-best in Europe or anything like that. We didn’t have an objective such as getting into the top-five in Europe in mind. It was a nice by-product of the work that was going on. But it’s also nice to hear that our own players are saying that they can run in the 90th minute and the opposition saying that we never stop. That’s validation for us.

We were confident that the work we were doing every day, that the building of those blocks, would have a successful outcome. Did we imagine it would be 10 games unbeaten and we’d get on the podium? Probably not. But that was a real validation of the struggles, the hours of love and tears that went into that six month period to try and get the team to a level that they’ve never been at.

Isn’t an important element of achieving these impressive physical levels also about recruiting the right profile of player as well?

An important thing to note is that the training is important, but we also have to give a lot of credit to the recruitment, which is itself deliberate and targeted: it’s a young profile, it’s an athletic profile, it’s players that can play high intensity football. I’m by no means an expert in it, but I’m involved in it with Paul (Mitchell) and especially with Lawrence (Stewart), in identifying those talents like an Ismail Jakobs, who is the fastest player in our team, like a Vanderson who runs through walls every day to try to do as much as he can. Getting those profiles right so that you have the ingredients already to build a player. You’re not trying to change a mindset, because those players are already in that mindset, so it’s part of a bigger project.

Is the objective of the performance department to become the most physical side in Europe?

My responsibility is to make sure we never lose a game because we don’t physically have the capability to deal with it. I think there are examples of certain big teams in Europe who struggle to cope with that. We don’t want people to say: ‘they died there, they conceded in the 90th minute because they got run over’. That’s what we have to manage. We don’t have a target to be number one; It’s only when we started looking back that we said ‘wow, that’s crazy how much we’ve been able to change.’

For us, the pride is in keeping our players healthy, so Philippe has hard decisions to make in terms of who he plays and who he doesn’t play, and then the main part of our team’s work is to say that we want every player, all 25 of them, to be able to play two games a week, every week. If we have that level of comfort, and the data shows that, then we give them to Phillipe to put them out on the field and hopefully get the three points.

Monaco has earned a reputation as a modern, innovative club, especially since the arrival of Dmitry Rybolovlev and the construction of a= new training centre in La Turbie. The use of data is a part of that. How do you and your team utilise data?

If I took things from Southampton, where I was 10 years ago, we’d be dead. The evolution of football is constant. I try to ‘steal’ many ideas from many organisations, both in football, but outside of the sport as well. There is a danger that if you only look at football, you end up down a rabbit hole and you don’t see what’s going on in other environments.

In America, I met a lot of people from Baseball looking at analytics; NFL, looking at strength; working with air-traffic controllers to understand how to manage stress and pressure; working with the Royal Ballet Group to look at how they prepare and train. We’re always trying to look outside the obvious to try to find things and keep evolving, but without getting carried away by fads and things that won’t add value to the organisation. For me, the biggest thing we do is data, but interpretation of data. It’s all about the human interaction around the data.

The team returned particularly early for pre-season preparations. What was the reasoning behind this decision?

We are really reflective of everything we do. We do something called the 10-game review, so after every 10 games, myself, Paul, Lawrence, the coach, the doctors, we all sit in a room and we debate what we’ve done, is there anything we could have done better, are there any issues, and we try to always constantly review and improve. As a part of that, we’re looking at previous pre-seasons and this is Philippe’s first pre-season and we’re thinking what we need to do to be more ready. We feel that we need to give enough time to be ready for Q3. I think Philippe talked about a sprint within a marathon. I think that’s a really nice analogy of what it is. We have to win one of the most important games of the season right at the beginning, but also not die because we still need to be performing until May.

So for us, coming back early was about giving us a good six weeks of progression, to allow us to hopefully be prepared to play 14 games in seven weeks. That’s never been done. So we are one of one in terms of what we’re going to be going through. Not many people have the ability to imagine what that could look like, so we’re trying to develop the best programme.

We believe in bringing the players back and building them up to that standard of two games a week so that when they hit August 3rd, they are conditioned and ready to go. We cannot say, ‘okay, step-by-step we’ll be good by the end of August,’ because it could be over by the end of August. The whole plan is to be as ready as we can be for that run of games.

DIMFE shines spotlight on freshwater ecosystems

The Donors’ Initiative for Mediterranean Freshwater Ecosystems has put out an urgent call to restore and protect these areas that are vastly important in regulating the local climate.

Created in 2021 by the Prince Albert II Foundation, the Donors’ Initiative for Mediterranean Freshwater Ecosystems (DIMFE) is on a mission to save the freshwater ecosystems in the region.

These ecosystems, which include rivers, lakes, marshes and peat bogs, are in danger of disappearing in the Mediterranean basin. It is estimated that the number of wetlands has been cut in half since 1970.

Freshwater ecosystems account for only 1% of the Earth’s surface but are home to 12% of the world’s known species. Extinction rates in these areas is four to six times higher than in any other place. Freshwater vertebrate populations have declined in the Med by an average of 28% since 1993, according to the conservation research institute Tour du Valet.

Beyond the flora and fauna these wetlands provide, they supply water for use by local populations.

The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation says that these areas are “constantly under threat” due to human disruption. Activities such as dam building, urban development, agriculture, and drinking water extraction are all factors in their not-so-slow demise. Climate change is hardly helping the matter, with droughts, floods and oxygen depletion levels adding to the strain.

DIMFE relies on an expert network, which chooses the projects to be supported and helps the initiative to put in place a strategy for its actions and communications.

A call for projects will be launched every year to support high-impact field projects on this topic. The first call was put out in autumn 2021, with the announcement of the 2022 edition imminently pending.

 

Princess’ Foundation rallies for World Drowning Prevention Day

The Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation is launching a digital awareness campaign and activities for World Drowning Prevention Day 2022 on 25th July to hit home the importance of looking after kids when they are in or near the water.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), about 236,000 people die each year from drowning. This statistic becomes all the more tragic when learning that it is one of the leading causes of death for children in low-to-middle income countries, with the main victims being only one to four years of age.

In France, drowning takes the lives of more than a thousand people each year, according to Public Health France. Most of these preventable deaths occur during the summer high season.

“The number of accidental drownings during the months of June, July and August 2021 remains high,” the governmental organisation explains. “Accidental drownings affect all ages and places. These results highlight the need to continue prevention of the risk of drowning at all ages, with an emphasis on the supervision of children and the practice of physical activity, including swimming, considering the state of health of each individual.”

Last summer, the two groups most affected by drowning accidents were those under the age of six and those over 65 with 26% and 20% of the total number coming from these two age ranges.

The Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation, following WHO recommendations, is taking action. This summer, there will be a campaign on local digital signage networks and social media using the simple but powerful messages, “Take Care of Them” and “Take Care of Yourselves”.

On 25th July, World Drowning Prevention Day, the Foundation will be set up on the Larvotto esplanade, offering activities and rescue demonstrations alongside Monaco Maritime Police, the Monegasque Sea Academy, CSAPM, and the Terre Neuve 06 Association.

They will be on hand to talk about the importance of taking measures to lessen the chance of accidental drownings, including learning to swim and learning lifesaving techniques, keeping an eye on children near the water at all times, checking kids’ floatation devices are properly working, avoiding swimming alone, obeying beach flags and bathing limits, not overdoing it, and avoiding alcohol if planning to be in or near water.

In addition to these general good habits to follow, there are ones more specific to those swimming in the sea versus swimming pools.

Swimmers who like a good dip in the Med should remain in supervised swimming areas and swim with another person. They should also consider swimming with an open water swim buoy to lessen chances of the unthinkable happening as well as swimming parallel to shore, rather than out to sea.

Swimming pools pose different dangers and therefore have different criteria, such as having an adult supervising at all times, swimming at the same time as children, always keeping an eye on them and being particularly vigilant in above-ground pools with no security systems.

Pope Francis receives Prince Albert and Princess Charlene at Vatican

Ecological and humanitarian issues were top of the agenda when Prince Albert and Princess Charlene met with Pope Francis at the Vatican’s Apostolic Palace on Wednesday.

According to Matteo Bruni, director of the Vatican Press Office, the pontiff said he was “impressed to meet a person who is committed and dedicates time to good works” after their meeting.

It was the second time that the princely couple met the Argentinean pope after a first visit in 2016. Prince Albert had met his predecessor, Benedict XVI, in 2009 and 2013.

The meeting between Pope Francis and the couple lasted about 25 minutes. During the traditional sharing of gifts, the Pope presented them with a bronze depiction of a child helping another child up from the ground with the words “love” and “help” etched on either side of the figures, as well as several documents including copies of his Message for the 2022 World Day of Peace and the Document on Human Fraternity.

Meanwhile, Prince Albert presented the Pope with an artistic sketch of the Chapel of St. John the Baptist located in the Palace of Monaco.

Monaco’s Vatican diplomacy is etched in ecological issues, given Prince Albert’s commitment to and defence of the oceans, as well as humanitarian issues, especially for children. Monaco regularly works with important Catholic organisations such as the Sant’Egidio Community and the Order of Malta.

After the audience with the Pope, Prince Albert and Princess Charlene visited the Folon exhibition at the Vatican Museums, which is open to the public until 27th August.

The Monegasque princely family have regularly visited Vatican City throughout the decades. Prince Rainier III and Princess Grace were received by Pope Pius XII in 1957, John XXIII in 1959, and Paul VI in 1974. In 2005, Prince Albert’s first public appearance as sovereign outside Monaco was his attendance at the funeral of Pope John Paul II.

 

 

 

New tool needed to measure gender wage gap

A new report detailing the wage disparity between men and women in Monaco shows that painting such a picture is not as easy as it sounds, hence the introduction of a new model in Monaco.

The Monegasque Institute for Statistics and Economic Studies’ (IMSEE) new report on the gender wage gap in Monaco revealed the “real situation in Monaco” by taking inventory in both the public and private sectors in 2019, the year prior to the global pandemic.

The study took into account specificities to Monaco and the structure of the employed population.

Explaining how it was built, Alexandre Bubbio, Director of IMSEE, said that “A solid statistical methodology and tending to an analysis ‘all other things being equal’ was built in partnership with INSEE (the French counterpart of IMSEE) and validated by the Scientific Council for Statistics and Economic Studies, chaired by Professor Pierre-André Chiappori.”

Using primarily the salary indexes of civil servants and state agents for analysing the public sector situation, the report found the situation to be nearly equal, with women having a slight edge of 0.7% over their male workmates. Women held 47% of senior level positions, again showing near equality.

The private sector is a bit less egalitarian, but not overwhelmingly so. Based on the difference between the median salary of men and women as defined by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Monaco shows a gap of 5.9% slanting toward men.

Despite this slight difference in wages between the genders, it puts Monaco firmly in the top 10 most egalitarian countries, placing them well ahead of France, which comes in at 24th in the rankings. The Principality is not an OECD member, so therefore is not included in their rankings, but if it were so, Monaco’s average would come in way above their collective average of 12.6%. It also beats out the European Union average of an 11.1% gap.

Though thorough and accurate, the study found a different picture when calculations were made on a monthly and hourly basis, so as to “mitigate the effect of working time which generally differs according to gender.”

Using this methodology, the average wage of women is a rather shocking 20.9% lower than men. By way of comparison, during the same period, this gap was 17.1% in the Alpes-Maritimes, 17.3% in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region and 15.4% in metropolitan France, according to INSEE.

This way of calculating allows statisticians to sidestep the impossibility of establishing a comparison for equal position and equal credentials. Said IMSEE in their report, “Indeed, it is simply not possible to analyse two situations that are strictly identical in terms of gender, diploma, age, occupation and career path.”

The gender wage gap is, thus, in line with the region, but is less dramatic when it is considered that the salaries of Monaco’s highest paid men, the nation’s professional athletes, are part of this study.

In the private sector, the findings of the report were carried out using an econometric model to measure the influence of certain characteristics in the gap observed, and therefore tend towards an “all things otherwise equal” approach.

The government has asked IMSEE to “deepen the analysis” in a few ways. They have asked them to launch a comparative study based on elements available from previous years to measure the dynamics of change which will be presented to local players. Additionally, they wish to create a voluntary self-assessment campaign for companies by targeting positions and examining criteria such as gender distribution, diploma, and functions. A short and anonymous questionnaire will be available online to gather the data.

Furthermore, there will be an implementation of actions promoting positive corporate behaviour based on the 2019 charter “Monégale” as well as awareness campaigns set up by the Committee for the Promotion and Protection of Women’s Rights.

Finally, there will be an information blitz led by the National Education, Youth and Sports Department that will remove the idea that certain jobs are the domains of men or women only.
