Last chance for tickets to see Mamma Mia! at the Grimaldi Forum

Mamma Mia!, the ABBA-inspired smash hit theatre production, is hitting the Grimaldi Forum stage next week, and a handful of tickets are still available for this family-friendly, toe-tapping extravaganza.

For 25 years, theatregoers have fallen in love time and time again with Mamma Mia!, the rom-com tale of a mother and her soon-to-be-married daughter set on an idyllic Greek island. Chaos unfolds when three former lovers—each a potential father of the young woman—are invited to the wedding. The competition for the title of ‘father of the bride’ brings plenty of laughs and touching moments.

The show will be on stage seven times between 9th to 13th October at Monaco’s Grimaldi Forum, and a limited number of tickets are still available for this must-see event.

As a fun twist, audience members dressed in ABBA-inspired outfits will be entered into a prize draw with the chance to win a weekend for two in London.

LONG, SUCCESSFUL RUN

Over the past quarter-century, Mamma Mia! has enchanted 65 million people worldwide through 50 productions in 16 languages. It holds the distinction of being the third longest-running musical in London’s iconic West End.

Set to ABBA’s beloved hits, the musical was written by Catherine Johnson, directed by Phyllida Lloyd and choreographed by Anthony Van Laast.

Full-price adult tickets to the Monaco shows range from €45 to €95, with under-12 tickets going for as low as €36.

Basketball: AS Monaco open EuroLeague season with decisive win over Milan

AS Monaco Basket has started the 2024/25 EuroLeague season on a high note, crushing Olimpia Milano 93-80 in a home game at Salle Gaston Médecin.

Following a comfortable BetClic Elite win against Strasbourg at the end of September, the Roca Team opened their EuroLeague season on 3rd October by dominating Olimpia Milano. It was a bruising 93-80 victory for the Monegasque side, who had the benefit of a home crowd behind them.

Mike James, who was recently voted Most Difficult Player to Stop in the 2024/25 EuroLeague Team Captains’ Survey, was the first to score. The Rocas outscored the Italians in both quarters of the first half and headed into the locker room with a 47-26 advantage.

Milan fought back in the second half and took charge of the game. The two teams played a fierce back-and-forth, with Milan scoring more points than Monaco, but it was not enough to make up for the first-half deficit.

In the end, Monaco came out as the winner, and Coach Sasa Obradovic was the first to praise them for their efforts.

“It was a very good match,” he said post-game. “It met all my expectations. The team was physically in shape, and the players were very strong. It’s a group victory; congratulations to my players. It was important to win at home in the first match. It’s a good start. Mike only started training a few days ago; he had a very good match. I could [mention] all the players tonight.”

Top scorer for the Roca Team was Alpha Diallo, with 20 points to his name, followed by Élie Okobo on 14 points. There was then a three-way tie for third, with Furkan Korkmaz, Mam Jaiteh and Matthew Strazel all putting 10 points on the board.

Navigating education’s evolving landscape: JCI Monaco explores the challenges of the digital age

The Principality’s education system was put under the microscope at a recent gathering of the Junior Chamber International Monaco (JCI Monaco), which saw guest speakers and participants discuss the challenges facing the sector, from the digital transformation to mobile phone policies and the rise of AI tools in the classroom, as well as the strengths of the Monegasque approach to learning and finding the right balance for children in the school environment.

JCI Monaco held its third Breakfast Conference of the year at Le Méridien Beach Plaza on 3rd October. The event brought together many notable figures from the Principality’s education system, including Jean-Philippe Vinci, Director of National Education, Youth, and Sports, and Dr. Olena Sullivan-Prykhodko, the co-founder of the British School of Monaco, who spoke on ‘The Role of Education in the Principality’.

Those present discussed the challenges and opportunities in Monaco’s education sector, particularly in digital transformation.

With many schools in France completely banning mobile phones and the UK implementing restricted usage, the British School of Monaco has decided to take a different approach through a collaboration with Monaco Telecom. Called the PhoneWall, the initiative provides students with older Nokia phone models that offer only the essential features needed for communication, thus reducing distractions linked to smart phone usage.

“We can’t abolish screens altogether; instead, we must teach students how to use them responsibly and limit their screen time,” said Vinci. “Children naturally spend less time on screens when the real world is more engaging than the virtual one.”

Another key topic was the rise of AI tools like ChatGPT, which students are increasingly using.

Vinci remarked, “We can’t demonise ChatGPT. We need to learn how to work with it wisely rather than against it.”

Both the Director of National Education and Dr. Sullivan-Prykhodko acknowledged the challenge of establishing boundaries regarding students’ use of AI tools, noting the difficulty in monitoring and guiding students to ensure these technologies are used responsibly without becoming a replacement for critical thinking skills.

To address this, the speakers mentioned the possibility of implementing some AI-detecting software and establishing guidelines for students to refer to when using AI tools, as well as developing workshops on the topic.

They also discussed the new educational infrastructure being developed to strengthen Monaco’s position as a learning hub. Last month, the British School of Monaco expanded its offerings by establishing a secondary school and plans to introduce the A-Level programme in the next few years. Similarly, Collège Charles III recently opened a new building just in time for the start of the academic year, and the International School of Monaco also relocated to a new building last month.

“We’ve had such a positive reception for the new Collège Charles III, and I’m excited to see how this space will be used, filled with students learning together. As I always say, we need to learn together and from one another,” commented Vinci.

JCI Monaco is a non-profit organisation that empowers young entrepreneurs aged 18 to 40. Through events such as these, workshops, and community projects, it focuses on leadership development, social responsibility and entrepreneurship while promoting innovation.

Monaco takes inventory of its Mediterranean fish stocks

Monaco’s Environmental Department has enlisted the help of a team of divers from the Groupe d’Etude du Mérou in making a comprehensive inventory and head count of two of the Principality’s most emblematic native fish species.

The Mediterranean grouper and corb were almost fished out of existence, but were saved from the brink of extinction when the species were granted protected status in 1993.

Since 2006, the Principality has been keeping close tabs on its own populations of the fish and has invited the Groupe d’Etude du Mérou (GEM) to come and make an inventory of grouper and corb numbers every three years, with the goal of evaluating the effectiveness of the protective measures currently in place for these endangered species.

The GEM’s latest survey of the Monegasque coast took place between 30th September and 4th October. The findings will now be compared against the last 18 years of collective data.

To complete the sample, two teams of GEM divers descended several metres below the waves to find and track the fish. Once spotted, the divers noted certain characteristics, such as estimated size and length, dive time, depth and habitat, as well as whether the fish seem to prefer living around rocks, in sea grass or in scree, for example. They also recorded any noticeable behavioural traits, such as whether the fish flees or remains indifferent to the divers when they enter their space.

Monaco’s most famous landmarks turn pink in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Local charity Pink Ribbon Monaco has partnered with 20 of the Principality’s most iconic buildings to put on a powerful display of support and solidarity for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Each of the famous landmarks is set to be illuminated in a pink glow on 4th October in honour of this worthy cause.

It is a tradition that was launched back in 2011. Every October, Pink Ribbon Monaco asks buildings and monuments across the Principality to switch their evening façade lighting to a rose-coloured effect in tribute to Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual event held around the world in October.

This time around, the charity has enlisted the help of 20 sites, including the Prince’s Palace, the Casino de Monte-Carlo, the National Council and the Oceanographic Museum.

To celebrate this now-iconic event, Pink Ribbon is throwing a private cocktail reception on the Café de Paris’ newly renovated upper terrace from 7.45pm on Friday 4th October. The location will give guests a clear view of the Monte-Carlo neighbourhood as it bathes in the pink lighting.

Digital self-examination brochure

The charity will use the event to promote its new digital brochure on breast self-examination, which is accessible via a QR code printed on locally created boxes of handmade sweet treats. The brochure is available in English and French, and contains vital information on how to perform self-examinations for the earliest possible detection and identify early signs of the disease.

Pink Ribbon Monaco was founded in 2011 by Natasha Frost-Savio. In 2024, she welcomed Princess Charlene as Honorary President and Olympic cyclist Tiffany Cromwell as Vice-President. In addition to Pink October, the charity also organises its popular Pink Ribbon Walk each February and various galas and events throughout the year.
