JCI Monaco empowers aspiring entrepreneurs with new start-up initiative

Driven by a desire to inspire more young entrepreneurs and start-ups to follow their dreams and ambitions, the Jeune Chambre Économique de Monaco, also known as JCI Monaco, recently launched a new event-based initiative that provides a platform for pitching and mentorship. Monaco Life went along to the inaugural edition of the Start-Up Meeting to find out more.

Since its founding in 1963, the JCI Monaco has been a keen advocate for entrepreneurship in the Principality, but this autumn, the group has stepped up its involvement in the start-up process with a series of targeted events for aspiring businessmen and women.

On 23rd October, the JCI Monaco, in collaboration with FNAC, hosted the Start-Up Meeting event at the Metropole Shopping Centre.

“We want to spotlight the abundance of ideas, entrepreneurial spirit and potential in Monaco,” JCI Vice-President Cedric Cavassino told Monaco Life at the event. “Our goal is to inspire the community, not just in the Côte d’Azur but in Paris, London and Europe too. We also want to be inspired by others, which is why this event is so valuable to us.”

The format of the event saw eight start-ups invited to present their companies to an audience of over 250 people, including fellow entrepreneurs and industry experts. Several had been participants in last year’s Concours de Création d’Entreprise, an annual competition organised by JCI Monaco in which entrepreneurs pitch their ideas to a jury. The winner receives a sum and an office for a year so that they can develop their start-ups in the Principality.

The goal was to create an incubator-like environment for innovation, allowing those behind the start-ups to share ideas, discuss challenges and gain mentorship from established professionals.

“We’re thrilled to welcome so many young start-ups here,” said JCI Monaco President Clement Marechal. “Encouraging the development of new companies across diverse sectors and industries is essential to us. This event provides a fantastic opportunity for these start-ups to network, present their ideas and expand their businesses. We’re hopeful it will continue next year with new additions.”

One attendee, a representative from Ambulance du Rocher, a newly launched ambulance service, revealed to Monaco Life, “We have been in operation for only 15 days, so participating here today, we hope to raise awareness and visibility for our company. It’s such a great opportunity… I didn’t know what to expect, but what’s great about this setup is that it’s very natural.”

Cavassino echoed this sentiment, saying, “For me, it was important for this event not to be about competition but about inspiring for the future, speaking together and finding the best solutions for the future.”

Other start-ups included: Excello Center Monaco, a tutoring service; Nivura, an IT services provider; Agora, a tech and media company; Soca, a software company and the winner of the 2023 Concours; and Sianatech Monaco, an engineering consultancy.

Looking ahead, JCI Monaco will be hosting two additional events to support the entrepreneurial community over the coming months: Monaco Inspire, scheduled for 30th November, and the Concours de Création d’Entreprise, which will take place on 10th December. Monaco Inspire is another new event focused on entrepreneurship. It will feature workshops and talks by successful entrepreneurs and business leaders such as Éric Larchevêque and Catherine Barba. For more information, click here.

Lebanon: Monaco-based charity Amis du Liban issues urgent appeal for aid

Monaco’s Les Amis du Liban charity has launched an urgent call for supplies and funds to assist the people of war-torn southern Lebanon ahead of the onset of winter. Here’s how you can help.

Since Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon began on 23rd September, the United Nations estimates that more than 800,000 people have been displaced within the country, with an additional 425,000 fleeing to neighbouring Syria.

This massive displacement has led to significant challenges as people scramble to protect themselves and their families from the approaching winter cold. In response, the local Monegasque organisation Les Amis du Liban has issued an urgent appeal for essential supplies, including blankets, mattresses, warm clothing for children and adults, heaters, food parcels, and hygiene and medical supplies.

These resources aim to support ongoing relief efforts and provide much-needed comfort and safety to vulnerable populations in the months ahead.

“To bring some warmth and comfort to families, our association has distributed gas bottles, heaters and warm clothes to help them cope with the harsh winter,” said Amis du Liban in a social media post. “We also believe that every child deserves to continue learning, despite the difficulties. This is why we provide books and school supplies to young people, so that they can continue their educational journey and remain hopeful for the future.”

Real estate prices surge in Antibes, Cannes and Nice amid national slowdown

Despite an autumn slowdown, property markets in three coveted French Riviera cities—Antibes, Cannes and Nice—showed resilience in October, with demand and prices continuing to rise.

The real estate market in France has experienced a slight autumn lull. The national market, which had been on a slow upward track since the economic recovery of early 2024, contracted slightly by 0.1% in October, yet there are reasons for optimism.

According to the Meilleurs Agents and SeLoger barometers, apartment prices fell in many areas, but rose in 22 of the 50 largest cities.

The marginal October decline of 0.1%, much smaller than last year’s drop of 0.7%, is typical for the season. Autumn generally brings a cooling in activity after the peak in spring and early summer, with many buyers now pausing purchases in anticipation of potential rate cuts in 2025.

“If we compare the current dynamic to that of last year, we see that the downward cycle is over, but the recovery will take a few more months and will not go at the same speed depending on the municipality,” clarifies Thomas Lefebvre, Scientific Director of Meilleurs Agents.

However, price trends vary significantly by location, and some cities are impervious to seasonal fluctuations. Several Côte d’Azur cities, including Antibes, Cannes and Nice, experienced price increases in October, rising by 0.9%, 0.4% and 0.5% respectively, while Paris, Strasbourg and Rennes noted comparative declines.

These three Côte d’Azur cities, traditionally driven by high tourist interest and second-home investments, can also lay claim to having the highest prices per square metre of all cities in France outside Paris. They have also seen impressive annual price growth: 4.21% in Antibes, 3.66% in Cannes and 3% in Nice. As of 1st November, properties in Nice, according to SeLoger, demand an average of €5,175 per square metre.

The Côte d’Azur’s enduring appeal, supported by strong demand from both domestic and international buyers, underpins the area’s resilience and competitive nature in the current market climate. The region’s unique combination of scenic allure, lifestyle appeal and investment opportunities makes it a distinctive segment within the broader French real estate market.

Lautaro Martínez honoured at 2024 Golden Foot Awards

The 2024 Golden Foot Awards have been won by a cohort of talented international players, including Argentine and Inter Milan player Lautaro Martínez, who will now add his footprints to the Champions Promenade in Larvotto.

The 21st edition of the Golden Foot Awards, held in Monaco on 31st October, was a star-studded affair. Football icons from around the world travelled to the Principality for the event and joined Antonio Caliendo, the president and founder of the Awards, the day before for a special pre-ceremony press conference.

The Golden Foot Awards celebrate sporting excellence, honouring both the achievements of individual players and the legacy of the sport. Only players over the age of 28 can be nominated for an award. Previous winners include the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Franco Baresi, Didier Drogba, and Ryan Giggs.

Speaking at the pre-awards event, Fabio Cannavaro, who won a Golden Foot Award in 2018, told Monaco Life, “Winning the Golden Foot Award is such an important moment for all players; it’s really an unbeatable occasion.”

Cannavaro was later awarded a Golden Foot Legend award alongside Gerard Piqué, Rui Costa and Fernando Llorente.

Among the big names nominated for a 2024 Golden Foot were Kevin De Bruyne, Harry Kane, Thomas Müller, Neymar Jr., Antoine Griezmann, Virgil van Dijk, Marco Verratti, Karim Benzema, Lautaro Martínez and Lionel Messi. Despite his numerous accolades, Messi is yet to win a Golden Foot, and many commentators thought that 2024 would be his year. Instead, the honour went to his fellow Argentine, Lautaro Martínez, who currently plays for Inter Milan.

Martínez, who was unfortunately unable to attend the event, will soon be invited to add his footprints to Monaco’s Champions Promenade, where the winners’ footprints are permanently imprinted.

He expressed his gratitude via video link, saying, “The first words that come to mind are: thank you. I am happy to share this award with my family, my friends and all the people who have always supported me.”

Other winners on the night included Japan’s Saki Kumagai, who has won the Champions League an impressive five times.

“I hope my achievement today inspires little girls to seek careers in the football industry because anything is possible for us women,” said Kumagai.

Golden Foot Legends Café Museum

At the press conference, it was confirmed that plans are underway for the creation of a Golden Foot Legends Café Museum in Monaco. The sports bar will be a two-storey, 600sqm space near the Champions Promenade, featuring the latest interactive technologies, including holograms, mobile applications, and 3D billboards, to facilitate interaction between the public and top athletes.

Monaco calls on private sector to flag risks in push to exit FATF grey list

Monaco’s government is ramping up its response to meet international anti-money laundering and terrorism financing standards after the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) placed the Principality on its ‘grey list’ for increased monitoring earlier this year.

On 30th October, Monaco’s Coordination and Monitoring Committee on National Strategy for Combating Money Laundering, Terrorism Financing, Weapons Proliferation, and Corruption held a plenary meeting under the direction of Minister of State Didier Guillaume, bringing together top officials, members of the National Council, and private sector representatives.

During the session, Minister Guillaume praised the “commitment of all stakeholders” in an area that is “complex, technical, and continuously evolving,” according to a statement by the government.

In an effort to remove itself from the ‘grey list’, the government said it needs a “collective response” to the FATF’s findings, acknowledging that “regular exchanges with the private sector are essential”. The various stakeholders, therefore, are now strongly encouraged to contact the relevant authorities “in order to bring their attention to concrete situations that may be encountered”.

In other words, the government is looking to the private sector to highlight red flags in Monaco.

“The contribution of the Principality’s vital forces is essential alongside the authorities with the same objective: to get off the FATF ‘grey list’,” said the government in its statement.

The government says it also plans to regularly update its practices and texts to stay aligned with broader European and global regulatory developments, particularly as the FATF frequently updates its standards.
