Holiday cheer takes over Monaco as Princely Family lights up enchanting decorations at Place du Casino

The Princely Family have ushered in Monaco’s holiday season with dazzling illuminations, handcrafted decorations, and a visit from Santa Claus at the Place du Casino.

Monaco’s holiday season officially began on Saturday, 30th November, with a two-part celebration that accentuated the Principality’s festive spirit. The evening started at the Place du Palais, where Prince Héréditaire Jacques and Princess Gabriella, accompanied by their parents, Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene, pressed the ceremonial buzzer to illuminate Monaco’s holiday decorations. The event, attended by Camille Gottlieb, Mélanie-Antoinette de Massy, Mayor Georges Marsan, and members of the Communal Council, marked the official start of the festive season.

The celebrations continued at the Place du Casino, where Monaco Life was present to witness the transformation of Monte-Carlo’s iconic square into a magical winter wonderland. Once again, Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella took the lead, pressing the ceremonial buzzer to light up the square, with their parents proudly by their side.

The dazzling display was a reflection of craftsmanship and creativity, brought to life by the work of 32 skilled professionals from nine trades, including woodworkers, painters, sculptors, electricians, upholsterers, accessory makers, puppeteers, seamstresses, and designers. Each element of the decorations was crafted entirely in France.

A centrepiece of the Place du Casino decorations is the introduction of 60 luminous elves, each handcrafted over 350 hours by a marionettist. These figures, brought to life with over 200 light sources, delight onlookers with their vibrant presence.

Each elf has its distinct personality, ranging from a gourmand clutching a treat to a romantic figure adorned with a flowered beard and bouquet. Other characters included a clumsy elf with a bandage, a scholar engrossed in a book, a girl in a flowing dress with a braid, and a handyman carrying a wrench.

Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene walked with Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella as they admired each decoration, guiding them through the displays. The children were delighted, their smiles reflecting the festive atmosphere. Adding to the excitement, Santa Claus made a surprise appearance, greeting the Princely Family warmly and presenting them with gifts.

The Place du Casino’s decorations, which will remain illuminated until 5th January, set the stage for a festive evening that continued with the inauguration of the nearby New Moods establishment.
