Europa-Park to introduce Monaco-themed district in 2026

Europa-Park has revealed its plans to open a Monaco-themed district in 2026, bringing the atmosphere of the Grand Prix, famed Casino de Monte-Carlo and Port Hercule to Germany’s largest theme park.

After the unveiling of the Principality in intricate, minute detail at Hamburg’s Miniatur Wunderland in 2024, now comes the news that Europa-Park in southwest Germany will soon launch its very own take on Monaco. It has been confirmed that the Europe-focused theme park will open the new Monaco district in 2026, making it the 18th European nation to be recreated within the 95-hectare attraction.

The Monaco section will reportedly be centred around the Silver Star Hall, which is currently part of the Silver Star roller coaster complex—one of Europe’s tallest and fastest coasters, originally developed in partnership with Mercedes-Benz. The hall, already associated with high-speed racing themes, serves as an exhibition space dedicated to motorsport and automotive innovation, featuring displays of race cars and interactive exhibits.

According to BNN.de, the space will be transformed to recreate the atmosphere of the iconic Monaco Grand Prix, legendary Casino de Monte-Carlo and glittering Port Hercule. A large reproduction of the storied coat of arms of Monaco is expected to welcome visitors at the entrance.

Details about the imminent Monaco district were first revealed in the park’s anniversary book, Magic Moments – 50 Years of Europa-Park, which provides a glimpse into the theme park’s plans for the 2025/26 season.

Prince Albert II is known to be a fan of the park and has visited on multiple occasions with his family. During his 2021 visit to the park, the Prince was photographed enjoying the rides with Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella, along with members of the Mack family, who founded Europa-Park back in 1975.

This connection with the Sovereign will reportedly be reflected in the themes chosen for the Monaco district, with spaces dedicated to Prince Albert’s environmental advocacy that will feature educational displays on marine conservation. The initiative aligns with the Prince’s long-standing commitment to protecting the world’s oceans.

Europa-Park, located in Rust, Baden-Württemberg, is one of Europe’s most visited amusement parks. Around six million visitors pass through its gates each year. Its attractions are all inspired by various European countries in a blend of themed rides, exhibitions and culinary experiences.

Anour Chocolat’s gem-shaped artisanal chocolates make their debut in Monaco

Anour Chocolat, a new brand specialising in gem-shaped artisanal chocolates, has launched in Monaco. Officially introduced on 28th January, the collection combines craftsmanship with refined flavours, offering a high-end tasting experience. Monaco Life was among the first to explore the new addition to the local gourmet scene.

After months—if not years—of trials and refinement, Anour Chocolat, a new Monaco-based brand, made its official debut this week.

Created by Nour Malas, a Monaco resident for 15 years, the maison focuses on small-scale production and a niche approach, offering chocolates crafted for a distinctive culinary experience. Each piece is shaped like a precious stone, drawing inspiration from polished gems and fine jewellery.

At the launch event, Monaco Life spoke to Malas to learn more about her vision for Anour Chocolat and the process that took her brand from conception to reality.

Emotion and connection

The name Anour reflects Malas’s personal connection to her work. As she explained to Monaco Life, the name is a blend of the French word amour—meaning love—and her own name, reflecting her belief that chocolate conveys emotion and connection.

The brand currently offers six unique creations developed in collaboration with a master chocolatier from the French Riviera. Among them is Irresistible, a pairing of Morello cherry and red fruit tea, which Malas says is her personal favourite.

Other chocolates include Seductive, a mix of dark chocolate and blue ginger from Madagascar, and Mysterious, a hazelnut praline infused with cardamom. There is also Gentle, a pecan praline with a rich sweetness, and Freshness, a ganache made with verbena, lemon and mint. Lastly, Vegetal is a vegan creation pairing apricot and rosemary.

In addition to these, Anour Chocolat also offers a selection of artisanal chocolate tablets, including a 66% dark chocolate with fleur de sel and a milk chocolate with roasted Piedmont hazelnuts. The collection also features the Giant Mendiant, a shareable chocolate creation available in either milk or dark chocolate, topped with options such as candied orange, roasted almonds and goji berries.

Anour Chocolat is setting itself apart by producing elegant, jewel-like creations in small batches and on-demand. Photo supplied

Anour Chocolat distinguishes itself by focusing on small-batch, on-demand production rather than mass manufacturing.

“This is not just chocolate; it’s a translation of emotion. Each flavour has been carefully designed to evoke something unique,” said Malas.

Referring to the brand’s niche availability, she added, “You need to want it and look for it.”

Malas explains that her inspiration comes from her surroundings in Monaco and her personal experiences, saying, “The beauty of the Principality and my sensory journey are behind every creation.”

She also recounted how her passion for chocolate began in Switzerland, where she fell in love with the aromas and craftsmanship of Geneva’s chocolate shops.

Currently, Anour Chocolat is available exclusively online, but Malas is working to expand its reach by partnering with local distributors. She is also exploring collaborations with gourmet shops and fine dining establishments in the region.

The packaging reflects the brand’s focus on exclusivity, with a simple design showcasing the product’s quality. Malas said the concept took two years to develop, with one of the biggest challenges being the creation of flavours that are distinct and align with the brand’s vision.

Anour Chocolat plans to host a few pop-up events throughout the year, allowing customers to experience the chocolates firsthand. Malas also hinted that the products may soon be available at high-end locations, including the Hermitage Hotel in Monaco.

Monaco joins other Alps nations in strengthening climate resilience commitments

High-level representatives from the eight nations that lie across the European Alps have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening climate resilience in the region, following talks at the 18th Alpine Convention Ministerial Conference in Slovenia on 22nd January.

Monaco’s delegation, led by Ambassador Anne Eastwood, joined representatives from seven other countries along the Alps, notably from Germany, France, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Liechtenstein and Slovenia. The talks centered around the quality of life for residents in the mountain range, which covers around 200,000 square kilometers, and how it can be improved and managed at a time when the climate in the region is changing dramatically.

A key outcome of the conference was a pledge to step up coordinated efforts to protect the Alps from the escalating impacts of climate change. Discussions focused on sustainable living, disaster risk management and innovative policies to safeguard the region’s fragile ecosystems. The ministers also agreed on the need to facilitate greener lifestyles and reinforce cooperation on environmental protection.

Education was also a priority, with delegates adopting recommendations aimed at strengthening climate awareness through hands-on learning experiences. Monaco’s representatives, a delegation that included Ambassador Eastwood, Astrid Claudel from the Directorate of the Environment and Wilfrid Deri from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, highlighted the work of the Principality’s Department of Education, Youth and Sport, particularly in integrating climate-focused extracurricular activities.

Beyond policy commitments, ministers stressed the importance of public-private partnerships in translating recommendations into action. This was further discussed at an official dinner hosted by Slovenia’s Minister of Natural Resources and Spatial Planning, where leaders explored strategies for sustainable tourism, renewable energy and water management in the Alps.

With climate pressures mounting, the renewed commitment marks a decisive step toward ensuring a more sustainable and resilient future for one of Europe’s most vulnerable regions.

Fundraiser launched to support John of Le Petit Bar after serious motorbike crash

Le Petit Bar John Contente

On 20th January, John Contente, the charismatic owner of Le Petit Bar on the Rock in Monaco, was seriously injured in a motorbike accident. Currently in a coma, the Portuguese-Australian restaurateur faces a long road to recovery, and the local community is coming together to ensure that his beloved restaurant remains open and operational in his absence through a fundraiser launched in his honour.

In the days after the accident, Le Petit Bar on Rue Basse was temporarily closed, and fears began to build about its future, with its leader and visionary out of action and recovering from his extensive injuries in hospital.

Then came a break in the clouds. Together with Le Petit Bar’s communications manager, Contente’s close friend and business partner decided to launch a fundraiser to help keep the popular venue afloat and to support his family in this challenging time.

“For so many of us, he was the heart and soul of Le Petit Bar,” reads a statement on the fundraiser’s online page. “His sharp humour, his candid spirit, and his boundless passion never failed to make us laugh and satisfy our appetites. Now it’s our turn to give back some of what he has given us. We’ve created this fundraiser to ensure his cherished restaurant is ready to welcome him when he wakes up and to support his family who travelled from afar to be by his side. Every contribution matters and shows John that we stand together with him.”

Within 48 hours of the fundraiser being active, more than 100 donors had contributed. That figure now stands closer to 170, with more than €40,811 collected, demonstrating the strength and depth of Monaco’s community spirit.

The funds will go towards covering key expenses such as the high rent, team wages, and medical costs. A portion of the funds will also be given to Contente’s family, who have travelled from far and wide to be by his side.

“Every contribution is a step toward easing their burden and giving back to someone who has brought so much joy, flavour, and warmth to our lives,” continues the statement. “Thank you so much for your support, generosity, and kind thoughts. Together, we can lift up the man who has given us so much.”

For those wishing to support John, donations can be made via the La Cagnotte des Proches platform. Click here for more information.

Trophée Virginie Hériot: Yacht Club de Monaco launches all-new J/70 regatta for women

On the 2025 International Day of Women in Sport, the Yacht Club de Monaco announced that it will host a J/70 regatta exclusively for women in March. In collaboration with the Fédération Monégasque de Voile and the Fédération Française de Voile, the Trophée Virginie Hériot, named in honour of this pioneering female sailor, will feature four days of events and races in the waters off the Principality.

The Trophée Virginie Hériot, scheduled from 13th to 16th March, is part of the Monaco, Capital of Advanced Yachting initiative and marks a significant step forward for women in the sailing world.

Announcing the event on social media, the Yacht Club de Monaco (YCM) shared its enthusiasm for the regatta, stating, “On this International Day of Women in Sport, the Yacht Club de Monaco is proud to organise a 100% women’s J/70 regatta in March 2025. This event celebrates Virginie Hériot, known as ‘Madame de la Mer,’ the first woman to win an Olympic sailing gold medal as part of a male crew in Amsterdam in 1928.”

The regatta’s schedule is packed with activities for competitors. On 13th March, participants will confirm registrations and attend training sessions. The official races begin on 14th March, starting with a skipper’s briefing and the allocation of boats, followed by the first warning signal at 12pm. The day will conclude with a welcome cocktail. Racing continues on 15th March, culminating in a lively crew party in the evening. The final races are set for 16th March, with a strict time limit for the last warning signal at 3.30pm. Afterward, the event will close with the official prize-giving ceremony.

Hériot remains an inspiring figure in the world of sailing, though her life was tragically cut short in 1932. After being seriously injured in a storm between Venice and Greece earlier that year, the French sailor continued competing undeterred. In late August, during the Arcachon regattas, she collapsed aboard her yacht, Aile VII, but insisted on competing. She succumbed to her injuries on 28th August 1932. Initially buried in her family vault in La Boissière-École, her son honoured her final wishes in 1948 by scattering her ashes at sea, paying tribute to her deep connection to the ocean.

This regatta promises to be a vibrant celebration of women in sailing, honouring the legacy of Madame de la Mer while showcasing the talent and spirit of today’s best female sailors from around the world.

Registration is limited to the first 20 teams, each composed of up to five female sailors, emphasising the event’s exclusivity and commitment to empowering women in sailing. For more information about the event, click here.
