The snow began falling in the Alpes du Sud at the weekend, with the promise of much more to come over the next few days. While this is excellent news for ski enthusiasts, who had begun wondering if the spring-like temperatures of early March signalled a premature end to the winter sports season, the significant snowfall across the mountains of the region brings with it a heightened risk of avalanches.
After a sunny, spring-like start to March, temperatures across the south of France have dipped once again. The clouds began gathering on Sunday 9th March, and by the afternoon, rain was falling heavily across much of the region.
In the mountains, the change in the skies was a welcome sight for skiers and winter holidaymakers. There has been little snow in the high-altitude parts of the region in recent weeks, and many working in and visiting the ski resorts of the Alpes du Sud had started to worry that the snow would soon be gone as the pistes turned to slush or mud.
But those fears have melted away with the return of heavy snowfall across the mountains of southern France.

The afternoons are likely to bring snow from Tuesday 11th through to Thursday 13th March, before consistent day-through-night snowfall begins on Friday 14th March.
As much as a metre is likely to fall on the highest peaks by the end of the weekend, with forecasters predicting that this week could be the snowiest of the entire winter.
Given the significant accumulations, even in mid-altitude areas, the avalanche risk will remain high. On Tuesday 11th March, it was raised to a 4/5 level risk, up from the 1 to 2/5 level risk noted across the region’s resorts over the last few weeks.
Closer to the coast, rainfall totals are set to be high, particularly in the Alpes-Maritimes. The Jana Depression, which is now heading towards the Iberian Peninsula, has left in its wake an increasingly active weather system, meaning that the Riviera could be in for a stormy – and saturated – week.
