36 breathtaking images, one public prize – which photo will you crown the winner?

Have your say in selecting the standout images of the 2025 Prince Albert II Foundation’s Environmental Photography Award by casting your vote for the winner of the Public Prize. The shortlist of 36 stunning photographs, chosen from nearly 10,000 submissions, is now available online, with the final deadline for votes set for 13th April.

Now in its fifth year, the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation’s Environmental Photography Award continues to celebrate the power of visual storytelling in raising awareness about environmental conservation.

Each year, the competition invites photographers from around the world, both professional and amateur, to explore humanity’s relationship with nature by capturing the beauty of life on Earth, exposing the often devastating and disturbing impact of human activities on the environment, or showcasing conservation efforts.

While a distinguished jury will ultimately select the winners of the five categories – Polar Wonders, Ocean Worlds, Into the Forest, Humanity vs. Nature, and Change Makers: Reasons for Hope – and the overall champion, the wider world also gets a say via the online Public Prize. A shortlist of 36 images has already been chosen from the close to 10,000 submissions, but be sure of your choice before you confirm, as each person can only vote once.

The winner of the Public Prize, along with the other category winners, will be officially announced on 6th May. Then, all the finalist photographs will be featured in an international touring exhibition, which traditionally begins in Monaco before heading off to various locations around the world.

With a prize fund of €11,000 – €5,000 for the overall winner, €1,000 for each category winner, €500 for the Public Prize and €500 for the Students’ Choice – the competition not only rewards the talents of the winning photographers but also elevates their work by including their images in a high-quality photography book while bringing their unique message to the world.

Princess Charlene rallies students for a day of sport and solidarity at eponymous rally

Nearly 400 schoolchildren from across Monaco headed down to Fontvieille earlier this week to take part in this year’s ninth edition of the Princess Charlene Rally, an event promoting the values of sport in building self-confidence, teamwork and resilience. Princess Charlene was among the local figureheads to attend and cheered on the students as they completed a series of tasks that tested their physical and mental strength.

Held on Wednesday 2nd April, the ninth edition of the Princess Charlene Rally saw close to 400 schoolchildren from troisième classes in Monaco (the equivalent of Year 10 in the UK or freshman grade in the US) turn out to participate in a range of activities, from races to lifesaving courses.

The event, which is organised on an annual basis by the Department of National Education, Youth and Sports (DENJS) in partnership with the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation, Peace and Sport, the Monaco Anti-Doping Committee and the Monaco Parents’ Association (APEM), is all about promoting the values of sport and this year coincided with the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, set to be celebrated around the world on Sunday 6th April.

The rally schedule featured a number of different events, each challenging in its own way and requiring the students to work together to solve problems or complete tasks. The students, who represented schools across Monaco, including Collège Charles III, Institution François d’Assise–Nicolas Barré and the SEGPA section of the Lycée Technique et Hôtelier, were put through their paces by the Société Nautique de Monaco in a rowing race on a set of ergometers, participated in a lifesaving course courtesy of the Académie de la Mer, demonstrated their creative side in a drawing competition on the theme of sport and peace, and were tested on their knowledge of the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation, Peace and Sport and the Monaco Anti-Doping Committee in a fun quiz.

There was a strong educational element to the day. In addition to the rally, the students also participated in an engaging discussion on the values of sport, led by athletes Kevin Crovetto and Pierre Frolla, ambassadors for the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation and Peace and Sport, as well as Marlène Nidecker, a Peace and Sport ambassador.

As the event came to a close, prizes were awarded to the morning’s winners, with Princess Charlene tasked with handing over two of the top awards: one for the best drawing and another for the overall first-place team.

Before heading off to enjoy the rest of the day, the students, the Princess and the teams who helped make the event a reality came together for a symbolic White Card photograph in support of Peace and Sport’s global campaign for 2025.

In a statement published by the Monaco Government, a representative for the event said, “The Princess Charlene Rally has become a key event, embodying Monaco’s commitment to sport, education and solidarity. It highlights the balance between physical activity, crucial to young people’s development, and intellectual awareness through educational and prevention-focused workshops. Enthusiasm ran high, with each participant eager to contribute to a noble cause—promoting the harmony of body and mind. Through this initiative, Monaco reaffirms its dedication to nurturing a fulfilled and engaged younger generation, embodying the universal values of sport and peace.”

Local Americans called to join global Hands Off! protest this Saturday

Americans residing in Monaco and the French Riviera are being called to assemble at Quai des Etats-Unis for a ‘Hands Off!’ protest this weekend, part of a global movement addressing concerns about the current U.S. administration’s policies.

The Nice demonstration is scheduled for 5th April from 4:00pm to 5:30pm, with participants symbolically gathering near the miniature Statue of Liberty on the Promenade. Organisers are encouraging a strong turnout from the American expatriate community and their supporters.

“Donald Trump and Elon Musk think the United States belongs to them. We’re not taking this anymore!” stated Donna Marie Crowley of the Riviera Reporter in a social media post promoting the event.

The protest is set to take place in more than 50 U.S. states, with expatriate communities internationally organising similar gatherings worldwide. According to the movement’s official website, the protests target what they call “the most brazen power grab in modern history”.

“Trump, Musk and their billionaire cronies are orchestrating an all-out assault on our government, our economy, and our basic rights—enabled by Congress every step of the way,” reads the movement’s official statement.

The organisers outline specific concerns driving their protests, including what they describe as the dismantling of Social Security and Medicare, tax policies benefiting billionaires while Americans face rising costs, elimination of consumer protections, and targeting of vulnerable communities including veterans, seniors, and immigrants.

“This is the moment where we say NO. No more looting, no more stealing, no more billionaires raiding our government while working people struggle to survive,” the statement continues.

However, organisers emphasise that ‘Hands Off!’ will not be a violent protest, stating: “A core principle behind Hands Off! is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values, and to act lawfully at these events.”

For Americans living in or visiting the French Riviera who wish to participate, the organisers have made it clear: “Bring a sign and bring your voice!”

Step back in time to all things medieval at the ‘Biot and the Templars’ festival

Biot and the Templars

Get ready to revisit the distant past as the French town of Biot dons its medieval finery for three days of fun and festivities, including jousting and war games, at the Biot and the Templars festival.

From 4th to 6th April, Biot will be transported back to the medieval era, a time when the Knights Templar roamed and dominated in this little corner of France. Whether you’re a history buff, a fan of live-action roleplay or simply looking for something different for a family day out, Biot et les Templiers is an unmissable event.

Attracting over 100,000 visitors each year, the festivities typically kick off with a grand opening ceremony, followed by the iconic torchlit procession through the village on 4th April, signalling the start of all things 13th century. Then the party really gets started as an exciting new battle format shakes up the medieval war games.

20 troupes from across Europe will descend upon Biot to showcase their skills, including the renowned English troupe, The Squires of History, who will be making their debut at the festival. Spectators will be able to watch as four historic factions—England, France, the Order of the Temple of Solomon and the Ottoman Empire—clash in battles of skill and strategy, with the goal of knocking off the crest of the opposing team. Catch these epic duels on 5th April at 11am, 1.45pm and 5.40pm, as well as on 6th April at 10am, 1.45pm and 5.10pm, all at the Campement de la Fontanette.

An equestrian show is also part of the action: the Chevaux de Prestige will be setting the night ablaze—quite literally. On the evenings of 4th and 5th April, the festival’s closing act will feature a breathtaking blend of equine mastery and daring stunts. With fire-eaters and mounted torchbearers, this thrilling display will take place under the starlit sky. Join the show at 9.30pm at the Campement de la Fontanette. Daytime stunt-riding shows will also take place on 4th April at 12.30pm and 5th April at 11.15am.

This year, visitors will also be able to witness authentic period war machines in action with live demonstrations of medieval weapons, from ballistas and catapults to bombards, which once launched massive cannonballs at enemy fortresses. Catch this on 5th April at 10am and 3.15pm, and 6th April at 12.30pm.

A brand-new addition to the show’s programme is Accrotour, an attraction that dares participants aged five and up to scale an 11-meter tower while harnessed, testing both agility and bravery.

Making a triumphant return is also Europe’s largest projection mapping show. On the evenings of 4th and 5th April at 9pm, the village will transform into a canvas for an audiovisual spectacle called The Awakening of the Templar.

Meanwhile, those eager to indulge in authentic medieval flavours will find five taverns and 15 restaurants serving up dishes from the era, cooked in traditional cauldrons and brimming with rustic charm.

So dust off thy medieval knight and lady kit and get thee to the Biot and the Templars festival. For a full programme and more information on this free event, click here.
