Macao delegation returns to Monaco for high-level talks on clean tech and innovation

Fresh from their first official visit in March, a delegation from the Macao Special Administrative Region of China returned to the Principality on 28th April to attend the Monaco Clean Fusion Forum and engage in strategic meetings with local leaders in science, technology, and sustainability.

The visit was anchored by the Monaco Clean Fusion Forum, held at the Yacht Club de Monaco under the High Patronage of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation. The forum, dedicated to pioneering sustainable energy solutions, provided an ideal platform to deepen cooperation between the two regions.

On the sidelines of the event, Monaco’s Ambassador to China, Marie-Pascale Boisson, hosted a bilateral meeting between the Macao delegation and key figures from Monaco’s innovation and economic sectors.

Innovation, sustainability and shared priorities

Representatives from MonacoTech, the Monaco Economic Board, the Centre Scientifique de Monaco, the Chamber of Renewable Energies and Ecology of Monaco, and Aton Green Monaco joined the discussions. The exchange focused on Monaco’s expertise in emerging technologies and innovative solutions, particularly in energy production and storage, as well as environmental health research.

The Macao delegation, led by Secretary for Economy and Finance Tai Kin Ip, included senior officials from Macao’s science and economic development agencies. Their visit highlighted a growing interest in Monaco’s model for sustainable, innovation-driven growth.

Strengthening ties through shared vision

This second official visit marks a continued commitment to strengthening cooperation between Monaco and Macao in areas of mutual interest. As both regions prioritise the ecological transition and advanced research, the dialogue set the stage for future collaboration and knowledge sharing.

Grimaldi Forum to host dazzling ‘Couleurs!’ exhibition with masterpieces from the Centre Pompidou

This summer, Monaco’s Grimaldi Forum will burst into colour with a multisensory art experience featuring works by Picasso, Matisse, Kandinsky, and Basquiat — all drawn from the Centre Pompidou’s prestigious collection.

From the 8th July to the 31st August 2025, the Grimaldi Forum Monaco will present Couleurs!, a major summer exhibition tracing a modern history of colour through over 100 works from the 20th century. Curated by Didier Ottinger, Deputy Director of the Musée National d’Art Moderne, the show brings together pieces by some of the era’s most iconic artists — Sonia Delaunay, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Amedeo Modigliani, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Vassily Kandinsky, to name just a few.

Colour through sight, sound and scent

Far more than a traditional gallery experience, Couleurs! is designed to awaken multiple senses. At its core are seven immersive monochromatic zones enriched with original soundscapes by composer Roque Rivas in collaboration with IRCAM, and olfactory atmospheres crafted by perfumer Alexis Dadier in partnership with the historic fragrance house Fragonard.

The result is an unprecedented exploration of colour — not only as a visual phenomenon but as something that can be heard and smelled — pushing visitors to rethink how colour shapes experience.

Where modern art meets modern life

Extending the exhibition into the world of design, iconic pieces by Ron Arad, Jean Prouvé, Ettore Sottsass, and Philippe Starck will be presented in bold, living-space installations conceived by French architect and designer Marion Mailaender. By recreating interior environments, Mailaender blurs the lines between fine art and everyday living, inviting guests to see colour not just in a gallery, but as part of daily life.

Tickets and pre-sale offer

Pre-sales for Couleurs! are now open, with a special rate of €7 (instead of the standard €14) available until the 30th June. Art lovers are encouraged to book early for what promises to be one of the season’s most inspiring cultural events.

Pierre Gasly, Carlos Sainz and Matt Pokora to headline Monaco’s Racing Stars Football Cup at Stade Louis II

Stade Louis II is set to host a star-studded charity match bridging the worlds of motorsport and football. The Racing Stars Football Cup, reviving a pre-Monaco Grand Prix tradition, will kick off on May 21st under the High Patronage of Prince Albert II.

Formerly called the World Stars Football Match, the newly-named event, organised by the Barbagiuans of Monaco—the team founded by the Prince himself and now chaired by Louis Ducruet since 2020—transforms a decades-old tradition into an exciting new official format that promises to captivate spectators while supporting vital causes.

“This is what the Barbagiuans are about,” said Louis Ducruet. “I believe it’s important to break new ground and welcome other elite athletes into our squad. It’s a step in line with our growth strategy.”

The impressive line-up features Formula 1 stars Pierre Gasly and Carlos Sainz alongside champion Thierry Neuville and motorsport icon Isack Hadjar. They’ll share the pitch with football veterans including Ludovic Giuly, Flavio Roma, Javier Chevanton, and defenders Gaël Givet and Sébastien Squillaci.

The event will also feature athletes from other disciplines, including French MMA fighter Benoît Saint Denis.

Entertainment figures will also participate, including singer Matt Pokora, comedians Paul Mirabel and Ragnar Le Breton, and model Baptiste Giabiconi, creating what organisers describe as “a true celebration for all.”

Häkkinen named event ambassador

Two-time Formula 1 World Champion Mika Häkkinen will serve as the ambassador for this first Racing Stars Football Cup. The Finnish racing legend, who claimed victory at the 1998 Monaco Grand Prix and now calls the Principality home, shared his enthusiasm during the official announcement.

“I was honoured and thrilled when Louis Ducruet and his team asked me to be part of this initiative, especially since the event will support two important causes,” Häkkinen stated. “I strongly encourage everyone to come and be part of the celebration this year.”

Proceeds from the match will benefit two causes with connections to motorsport: the Jules Bianchi Association, established following the Formula 1 driver’s tragic accident at the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix and his subsequent passing in July 2015, and which primarily supports Archet Hospital in Nice, with particular focus on its specialised unit for brain-injured patients.

Philippe Bianchi, Jules’ father and honorary president of the association, expressed his gratitude: “This initiative touches me deeply, as it will bring together several F1 drivers just before the Monaco Grand Prix, which was so important for Jules.”

Uniting sport and safety advocacy

BE SAFE Monaco, the event’s second beneficiary, was founded by Camille Gottlieb, daughter of Princess Stéphanie, to raise awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving.

“Having personalities from the world of motorsport involved clearly helps amplify our message,” Gottlieb explained. “Being part of such an event is a privilege and validates the relevance of our cause.”

This match continues a cherished tradition that has brought racing drivers and former footballers together before the Monaco Grand Prix for more than three decades. Originally organised by Mauro Serra, who championed the event for many years, this new chapter has received the blessing of his children.

Shauna and James Serra expressed their support, stating they “fully trust the Barbagiuans and Louis Ducruet to carry this historic event forward with passion, while remaining faithful to its core values of sportsmanship and solidarity.”

Louis Ducruet, who has participated in previous editions of the match alongside his uncle Prince Albert II, described himself as “honoured to lead the Barbagiuans in the revival of this tradition”.

Futuristic yachts and AI set to take centre stage at Monaco Energy Boat Challenge

As the buzz of the Monaco E-Prix fades, attention is shifting from land to sea, where the 12th edition of the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge is poised to make waves in maritime sustainability and innovation this July.

The Monaco Energy Boat Challenge, scheduled to begin in just two months, will once again transform the Principality into a hub for next-generation yachting. Hosted by the Yacht Club de Monaco and supported by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, UBS, BMW and SBM Offshore, the event is gaining recognition as a leading platform for maritime innovation. This year, over 30 teams from 18 countries are already confirmed, with that number expected to grow to more than 40 by the 15th May registration deadline.

Bridging academia and industry, the Challenge is a testing ground for engineering students and yachting professionals who share a common vision: revolutionising the future of clean, energy-efficient marine mobility. Major shipbuilders like Monaco Marine, Oceanco, the Ferretti Group, Azimut | Benetti Group, Sanlorenzo and Lürssen are lending support and expertise to teams navigating this fast-evolving field.

In a bold step forward, the 2025 edition will debut the AI Class, a new race category for autonomous vessels guided by artificial intelligence. “This is a revolution on par with past breakthroughs,” said Bernard d’Alessandri, Director and Secretary General of the Yacht Club de Monaco. “It is urgent that we rethink our relationship with the sea and act collectively to preserve this vital space.”

On land, the event will feature a series of expert-led conferences designed to mobilise collaborative thinking around advanced marine technologies. The Advanced Yachting Technology Conference on 3rd July will cover cutting-edge topics such as carbon capture on board, maritime noise pollution, and the integration of space tech and AI into decarbonisation strategies. The following day, the 6th Hydrogen & Alternative Fuels Conference will delve into sustainable solutions like hydrogen refuelling infrastructure, solid and liquid storage systems, and methanol-powered superyachts.

Beyond innovation, the event focuses on mentorship and career opportunities. The Corporate Mentoring Programme pairs industry leaders with emerging talents, including teams from the University of Bologna and Università di Genova. Companies like SBM Offshore and Sanlorenzo provide technical support and access to hydrogen research and inspection technology. The Job Forum, another cornerstone of the event, facilitates connections between students and yachting firms, resulting in over 90 interviews during the 2024 edition alone.

Four competitive categories will headline the event: the new AI Class, the Energy Class with its custom energy integration challenge, SeaLab Class for prototypes up to 12 metres, and the Open Sea Class for CE-certified zero-emission vessels up to 25 metres. The prestigious €25,000 Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation Sustainable Yachting Technology Award will once again honour the most impactful project in emissions reduction and energy efficiency.

Nature, hope and hidden heroes: winners of the 2025 Environmental Photography Award revealed

From the hidden labours of marine worms to the hopeful flutter of a baby sea turtle, the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation’s 2025 Environmental Photography Award has once again celebrated the power of storytelling through a lens.

The Grand Prize of the 2025 Environmental Photography Award has been awarded to Spanish photographer and marine biologist Angel Fitor for his captivating image Unseen Unsung Heroes, which captures the humble but essential actions of marine worms filtering sand off the Spanish coast. The image, a winner in the ‘Ocean Worlds’ category, earned Fitor the top honour and a €5,000 grant from the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation.

“For me, photography is a language that speaks on behalf of nature,” said Fitor. “This image reveals the quiet but critical influence these small creatures have on the Mediterranean ecosystem — an ecosystem upon which we ourselves depend.” The marine biologist-turned-photographer, whose work has also been recognised by World Press Photo and Wildlife Photographer of the Year, dedicated the award to the invisible workers of the sea that inspired it.

Fitor’s presence was felt across the competition. In addition to the Grand Prize, he won the Change Makers: Reasons for Hope category with Training Day, a tender shot of a baby loggerhead sea turtle in recovery. Two other images, Night Stalker and Beauty Languages, were shortlisted in the Ocean Worlds category, cementing his status as one of the most celebrated contributors to this year’s edition.

“I feel like a proud ambassador for this award,” Fitor said, reflecting on the Foundation’s long-standing commitment to the Mediterranean Sea — a commitment, he noted, that has inspired his work since childhood.

Amy Jones’ winning photograph Breeding Machine

Seven winners and a global jury

In total, seven photographers received prizes this year. Notable winners include Jellyfish and Iceberg by Galice Hoarau in the Polar Wonders category, Clash of Kings by Iacopo Nerozzi in Into the Forest, and Breeding Machine by Amy Jones in Humanity versus Nature. The Public Award, voted on by audiences, went to After the Flames, Hope by Fernando Faciole, while the Student’s Choice Award was given to Forest Guard by Bambang Wirawan.

This year’s international jury was presided over by National Geographic photographer and filmmaker Ami Vitale. “Photography is one of the most powerful tools we have to reconnect people with nature,” she said. “These images aren’t just beautiful — they demand action.”

Promenade du Larvotto to host 2025 exhibition

The winning and shortlisted photographs — 36 in total — will be exhibited along Monaco’s Promenade du Larvotto from the 3rd June to the 31st July, before going on international tour. As in previous years, the Foundation will also publish a photography book through Skira Paris, featuring all selected images with explanatory texts.

Now in its fifth year, the Environmental Photography Award forms a key pillar of the Foundation’s Green Shift Initiative. According to Olivier Wenden, Vice-Chairman and CEO of the Foundation, the award “gives voice to the living world and speaks directly to the heart of the public… weaving new imaginary worlds that call for greater collective action.”

Looking ahead to 2026

Photographers inspired to share their vision for next year’s edition won’t have long to wait. Entries for the 2026 Environmental Photography Award will open from the 2nd September to the 2nd November 2025 via the award’s official website.

Mobile waste unit rolls out across Monaco to tackle hazardous household items

Monaco’s new mobile waste collection service is bringing environmentally friendly disposal options straight to residents’ doorsteps, one Saturday at a time.

Launched on the 7th and 8th March during the MonaCollecte event on Quai Antoine Ier, the new mini mobile waste station is a joint initiative between the Société Monégasque d’Assainissement (SMA) and the Prince’s Government. Designed to collect hazardous household waste more easily and safely, the service now travels to a different district of the Principality once a month.

Operating from 9am to 1pm, the station offers residents the chance to dispose of special waste without the need to visit a permanent facility. Staffed by SMA professionals, the unit ensures that all waste is handled in a secure and environmentally sound manner. On hand to assist with sorting questions, the team also distributes recycling guides, pre-collection bags, and dog waste bags to promote better waste management at home.

The service is free and intended solely for private individuals. It aims to simplify sustainable habits while reducing the risk posed by long-term storage of dangerous materials in residential areas. However, for reasons of safety and limited space, the mobile unit is unable to accept certain categories of waste. These include gas bottles, fire extinguishers, infectious healthcare waste such as DASRI, plant or garden trimmings, construction rubble, and bulky waste items. General household rubbish, recyclable packaging, and glass are also not accepted, as these are already managed through existing public collection services or separate appointment-based pickup.

Further details, including accepted materials and the calendar of upcoming collection dates and locations, can be found at: https://www.sma.mc/fr/mini-decheterie
