Prince Albert II meets President Zelensky in New York, calls for urgent peace in Ukraine at UN Assembly

Prince Albert II met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday ahead of addressing the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where he delivered a powerful call for peace and respect for international law in the face of ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

On Wednesday 24th September, Prince Albert II met briefly with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the United Nations headquarters in New York, reaffirming the Principality’s support for Ukraine.

The meeting came just moments before the Prince took the stage at the General Assembly, where world leaders gathered for one of the most significant diplomatic forums of the year. Accompanied by Isabelle Berro-Amadeï, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation; Monaco’s UN Ambassador Isabelle Picco; and Julie Donati of the Prince’s Cabinet, Prince Albert stood alongside Monaco’s closest diplomatic allies in calling for renewed global commitment to peace and multilateralism.

Monaco’s clear stance on Ukraine and global security

In his 9:45am address to the General Assembly, the Prince described today’s world as “multipolar”, where national interests increasingly overshadow shared global ideals. He warned of the erosion of international security and called for a return to the core principles of the United Nations: sovereign equality, peaceful resolution of disputes, and respect for international law and human rights.

“Monaco firmly condemns the war of aggression against Ukraine and the suffering it causes for civilian populations,” said Prince Albert. “I reiterated this message moments ago to President Volodymyr Zelensky.”

He concluded with a strong appeal for diplomacy: “I hope that a just, lasting, and negotiated peace agreement can be found as soon as possible—one that guarantees security and meets the aspirations of the Ukrainian people.”

French Riviera garden receives €300,000 Heritage Lottery Prize

The Jardin Serre de la Madone, perched on the heights above Menton, has received €300,000 from France’s Heritage Lottery after being selected as the sole garden among 18 emblematic sites chosen for the 2025 scheme.

The prize giving ceremony, which took place on September 19th during European Heritage Days, saw Jacques Joncour, department delegate of the Heritage Foundation and Anne-Sophie Jupinet, sector manager for FDJ United, present the cheque to Michael Likierman, president of the ‘Association for the Safeguarding of Exceptional Gardens of the Mentonnais’ (ASJEM). The funding will support restoration of the botanical masterpiece created in 1924 by British landscape architect Lawrence Johnston, who also designed Hidcote Manor Garden in Gloucestershire.

Menton’s mayor was among notable guests during the prize giving ceremony. The Heritage Lottery scheme, launched in 2018 under Stéphane Bern’s patronage, aims to rescue endangered heritage sites through a partnership between the Heritage Foundation, Ministry of Culture and lottery operator FDJ United. Since its inception, the initiative has raised over €150 million supporting more than 980 sites across France.

This year’s selection examined over 700 applications, making Serre de la Madone’s designation as the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region’s emblematic project particularly significant. The nine-hectare terraced garden, classified as a Historic Monument since 1990 and awarded ‘Remarkable Garden’ status, is undergoing a comprehensive €3.2 million restoration programme that began in 2025.

The restoration encompasses rehabilitation of the heated greenhouse, pergola and stone terrace walls alongside modernisation of hydraulic installations including pools, fountains and channels. Work also includes creating a new nursery, restoring sculptures, stabilising the villa and progressive replanting of botanical collections featuring citrus trees, hedgerows, aquatic gardens and cacti.

A living-breathing heritage

Gilles Deparis director of ASJEM, which manages the restoration project, highlighted the importance of the funding. “This recognition will enable essential work to preserve and showcase this botanical jewel conceived by Lawrence Johnston in the heart of Menton,” he said. “We can transmit this exceptional living heritage while strengthening its role as a place of history, biodiversity and culture.”

The garden houses three nationally recognised botanical collection certified by the Conservatory of Specialised Plant Collections. These include Araliaceae featuring tropical foliage such as Tetrapanax papyrifer and Fatsia japonica, Pittosporaceae including Asian and Oceanic species known for lustrous foliage and orange-scented flowers, and Proteaceae encompassing Australian and South African genera including Grevillea, Banksia and Macadamia that offer rare textures and graphic flowering displays. The collections represent Johnston’s vision of creating a living laboratory where species from five continents could adapt to Mediterranean conditions.

However, despite the Heritage Lottery designation, organisers stress significant funding requirements remain. A public appeal for private sponsorship and individual donations offers tax relief of 66% for income tax, 75% for wealth tax and 60% for businesses. Supporters can sponsor specific elements such as lemon trees, contribute to particular restoration projects or organise events within the garden.

The garden, owned by the Coastal Conservatory since 1999, attracts over 10,000 visitors annually with projections of 30% growth by 2027. It remains open year-round except mid-November to mid-December, offering both self-guided tours and specialist botanical walks

Smart and Sustainable Marina Rendezvous brings innovation and global cooperation back to Monaco

Monaco strengthened its role as a pioneer in sustainable marina development as the 5th Smart & Sustainable Marina Rendezvous brought global innovators to the Yacht Club de Monaco. Over two days, ideas flowed on everything from AI-led infrastructure to eco-conscious design. A highlight came when Monaco revealed plans for a new offshore anchorage zone by summer 2026, designed to ease pressure on marine ecosystems while keeping the Principality a key destination for the yachting world.

Held on 21st and 22nd September, this year’s Rendezvous was organised by M3 Monaco, with support from the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and key partners including Bombardier, MB92 Group and the Italian Yacht Masters association.

It brought together an ecosystem of developers, investors, architects, and innovators from across 17 nationalities to explore the future of marina infrastructure. A total of 26 startups, 9 marinas and 15 architectural teams were evaluated by a jury of 35 members, with projects showcased in a comprehensive E-Catalogue.

José Marco Casellini, CEO of M3 Monaco, described the event as “a collective energy driving the Rendezvous. Investing in sustainability is to invest in our future.” Bernard d’Alessandri, Secretary General of the Yacht Club de Monaco, added: “Yachting cannot function without an ecosystem. By bringing together so many professionals, we are demonstrating that the environmental transition of marinas is a universal ambition.”

Political leaders call for balance between development and preservation

Monaco’s Minister of Public Works, the Environment and Urban Development, Céline Caron-Dagioni, opened the conference by emphasising the need to harmonise innovation, economic attractiveness and ecological stewardship. She confirmed that the Principality is planning the installation of a new offshore anchorage zone by summer 2026 to better protect seabeds while maintaining Monaco’s appeal to the yachting industry.

Caron-Dagioni also highlighted Monaco’s active support within the International Maritime Organisation in advocating for cleaner fuels and alternative propulsion technologies.

Albania’s Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, Belinda Balluku, echoed the call for higher standards, stating that “ports can no longer be considered solely as places for loading and unloading. They should become drivers of economic progress, urban transformation and high-end tourist experiences.”

From AI to architecture: rethinking the marina of tomorrow

The event’s three main conference sessions addressed coastal development, investment frameworks, and the role of data in responsible marina operations.

Speakers included figures from Luca Dini Design, the Saudi Red Sea Authority, United Development Company (Qatar), BR Marinas (Brazil), IGY Marinas, Invest Hong Kong and Monaco’s own Government AI and Data Department.

Experts advocated for embedding local identity into projects, embracing regenerative design, and using smart data systems to improve sustainability and profitability. The potential of AI and collaborative data strategies was positioned as a key enabler in the sector’s transition.

Meanwhile, workshops tackled themes such as marina crew needs, sustainable fuels, and startup financing. Strategic partnerships were also formalised, including a collaboration between the SEA Index and Pick a Pier to expand Monaco’s influence in sustainable yachting.

Smart Dock and awards spotlight the future

A standout feature of this year’s edition was the introduction of the SMART Dock initiative—a collaborative laboratory focused on designing a prototype for a smart, sustainable dock integrating biodiversity, digital infrastructure and energy flexibility.

The event also celebrated innovation through its annual International Smart & Sustainable Marina Awards. Marina Resort Cavtat in Croatia won the main prize for its regenerative approach and technological ambition. Special Prizes were awarded to IGY Marinas’ Vieux Port project in Cannes and Marina da Gloria in Brazil.

Startups such as France’s Gwilen and Italy’s BetterSea Power were recognised for circular economy solutions and integrated mooring technologies, while scaleups Metarina and Kontis received praise for operational innovation.

In the architecture category, student and professional teams from Iran and Germany respectively were honoured for visionary design responding to the environmental and cultural challenges facing Venice.

Gourmet finger food and bold cocktails by Café de Paris

The 2025–2026 season also features an entirely new menu crafted by Victor Marion, Chef of the famed Brasserie du Café de Paris Monte-Carlo. Guests can enjoy elevated finger food in the plush red-and-gold interior, including truffled Croque-Monsieur, Lobster Brioche, and Moods-branded cheese Madeleines.

Desserts like churros with caramel sauce add a playful twist, while the cocktail menu leans into the venue’s flair for the dramatic. Highlights include the ‘Big Moods’ Spritz series and a Triple Margarita made with premium tequila, all designed to match the vibrant, indulgent atmosphere that defined New Moods’ debut season.

A venue reborn in the spirit of Monaco’s musical legacy

Helmed by Stéphane Lobono and curated by Alfonso Ciulla, Artistic Director of Monte-Carlo SBM, the revival of New Moods is the result of a vision championed by SBM Deputy Chairman Stéphane Valeri. The venue originally made its name from 2008 to 2011 as a launchpad for local rock and folk artists.

Now, with a revived identity and a new era of performance, New Moods is firmly back in Monaco’s cultural spotlight, an intimate venue of just 120 seats and 200 standing places, right in the heart of the action. As with last year, it remains available for private hire, allowing bespoke events and celebrations that embrace the Art de Vivre à la Monte-Carlo.

Family-friendly and festive: Halloween at New Moods

The spirit of celebration extends to all ages. On Wednesday 29th October, New Moods will host a themed Halloween afternoon for children aged 4 to 7, with magic shows and creative workshops. The evening continues with a party for 8 to 12-year-olds, promising festive fun in true Monte-Carlo style.
