Monaco’s Hugo Micallef suffers first professional defeat in European title fight

Hugo Micallef, Monaco’s only professional boxer, has suffered his first defeat in the ring after being stopped in the eighth round by Ireland’s Sean McComb in a fight for the IBF European lightweight belt.

The bout took place on Saturday evening at the fourth edition of the Monte-Carlo Showdown, where Micallef faced the reigning champion who had claimed the European title in September against Welshman Ben Crocker. The Monegasque’s unbeaten run of 11 professional victories came to an end as McComb successfully defended his continental crown.

Irish champion dominates with left hooks

Throughout the contest, Micallef struggled to cope with McComb’s devastating left hook, which proved to be the defining weapon of the fight. The Irishman’s power punches repeatedly troubled the Monaco fighter, who appeared to suffer under the relentless pressure from the opening rounds.

By the sixth round, after absorbing two heavy left hooks, Micallef appeared close to throwing in the towel but showed determination to continue, searching desperately for an opening that might change the course of the fight. The breakthrough never materialised as the Monegasque exhausted himself attempting to land a knockout blow against an opponent who remained composed and controlled throughout.

Technical knockout ends title hopes

The end came in the eighth round when a third crushing left hook at the edge of the ropes left Micallef unable to defend himself adequately. The referee stopped the contest by technical knockout, bringing an end to the Monegasque’s European title aspirations.

Noël des Animaux: Rokethon hosts annual Christmas celebration for abandoned animals at Monte-Carlo Bay

The Rokethon association will host its annual Noël des Animaux charity event on Sunday 14th December at the Monte-Carlo Bay, with all proceeds dedicated to abandoned animals and those without families during the festive season.

The event, taking place in the hotel’s Sincerity salon, brings together Monaco’s animal welfare community for a celebration that welcomes both two-legged and four-legged guests. In an exceptional arrangement, Société des Bains de Mer will allow invited guests to bring their dogs into the Monte-Carlo Bay, making the celebration fully inclusive for animal lovers and their companions.

Festive atmosphere supports animal welfare

The Sincerity salon will be transformed into a festive wonderland featuring a grand Christmas tree decorated in partnership with BricoPro Monaco. Artist Karina Garcia has created personalised Christmas baubles bearing the names of attending dogs, which will be sold to benefit the animal welfare cause. The grande Marianne will present her distinctive original bags, adding an artisanal and elegant touch to the event.

Tables throughout the salon have been carefully decorated by Rokethon volunteers, with each arrangement revealing the personality and expertise of the team members. The SPA de Monaco will join the celebration to mark Christmas alongside animal friends, continuing the partnership between the two organisations.

Entertainment and activities for all ages

The celebration will feature performances by Philip Nikwé and singer Mona Lou, who will perform beautiful Christmas carols throughout the day. A magician will enchant both children and adults, whilst BricoPro Monaco, a loyal partner of the event, will distribute gifts to all attending dogs.

Children can participate in creative workshops led by Karen September, alongside sessions teaching them how to draw dogs and cats, guided by artist Yulia. The festivities will be toasted with champagne provided by GOLD, celebrating the magic of the season together.

Chef Marcel Ravin creates special buffet

Guests will enjoy a refined buffet created by Chef Marcel Ravin. The two Michelin-starred chef, who leads the Blue Bay restaurant at the Monte-Carlo Bay, has designed a menu that reflects the festive spirit whilst supporting the cause of abandoned and forgotten animals during the Christmas period.

Rokethon’s commitment to animal welfare

Founded by Sylvia Sermenghi, Rokethon has become an established force in Monaco’s animal welfare landscape since its creation. The association’s mission centres on promoting responsible pet ownership, fighting against animal abandonment and supporting shelters that work daily to care for homeless animals.

Beyond the annual Christmas celebration, Rokethon organises the popular solidarity walk that brings together hundreds of dogs and their owners to raise awareness about animal abandonment. The organisation has built strong partnerships with the SPA de Monaco and other animal welfare groups across the region.

The Noël des Animaux represents a key moment in Rokethon’s calendar, bringing together the animal welfare community whilst raising crucial funds. All money raised through the sale of personalised baubles and other contributions will go directly to supporting abandoned animals and those awaiting adoption, ensuring that vulnerable pets are not forgotten during the festive season.

Lando Norris claims maiden F1 World Championship as Charles Leclerc finishes fourth in Abu Dhabi finale

Lando Norris has won his first Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championship after a tense three-way battle culminated in a third-place finish at the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday, with Monaco’s Charles Leclerc finishing fourth after a spirited drive for Ferrari.

The 26-year-old McLaren driver finished just two points ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in the final standings, denying the Dutchman a fifth consecutive world title. Norris becomes the first British driver to claim the championship since Lewis Hamilton’s triumph in 2020.

Red Bull’s Verstappen won the final race from pole position, with Norris’s teammate Oscar Piastri finishing second. However, Norris’s third-place finish was sufficient to secure the title, sparking jubilant celebrations in the McLaren garage as the team completed a remarkable double, having already clinched the Constructors’ Championship in Singapore in October.

Emotional scenes as Norris realises championship dream

After crossing the line, Norris remained in his car for several moments, visibly overcome with emotion. His parents were trackside to witness the historic moment, and he embraced them before celebrating with his McLaren engineers and mechanics. The British driver later performed celebratory doughnuts on the circuit.

Team CEO Zak Brown’s congratulatory message over the radio captured the joy of the moment. “Lando, this is Zak from McLaren. Is this the world champion hotline? You did it! You did it! Awesome,” Brown said.

Norris, struggling to control his emotions, responded through tears: “Oh my God, thanks so much. I love you guys. Thanks for everything.”

Title decided by slender margin in three-way battle

Norris entered the decisive race 12 points ahead of Verstappen and 16 ahead of Piastri, setting up a tense finale at the Yas Marina Circuit. For Verstappen to claim the title, he needed Norris to finish fourth or lower, whilst Piastri required a victory with Norris finishing outside the top five.

Verstappen controlled the race from the front, with the grid positions reflecting the championship battle as Norris started alongside him on the front row and Piastri third. Despite the pressure, Norris delivered a measured performance to secure the points needed, with Piastri ultimately finishing third in the championship standings, 13 points behind his teammate.

Leclerc congratulates Norris after strong Ferrari showing

Monaco’s Charles Leclerc finished fourth in the race after a spirited drive for Ferrari, having made up a place at the start and battled with Fernando Alonso before closing on Norris during the middle stages of the race. The Monégasque driver attempted to attack the McLaren but was unable to find a way past.

After the race, Leclerc was gracious in congratulating the new champion. “Congratulations to Lando for his first title. He has been doing an incredible job of driving this year and it’s fully deserved,” Leclerc said.

The Ferrari driver reflected on a challenging season for the Italian team. “I gave it everything and our team executed the race perfectly. Unfortunately, P4 was all there was in it for us today. I really wanted to finish the season on a high, bringing home a podium for everyone, and I was close to Lando in a few moments of the race, but it was not enough to make a pass.”

Leclerc thanked the Ferrari team and the Tifosi for their support throughout what he described as a tough season, adding that the team would regroup in Maranello to prepare for the challenges ahead. “Next season is still a blank slate, and we don’t know where the other teams stand, so we don’t have any real expectations yet,” he noted.
