Basketball: AS Monaco open EuroLeague season with decisive win over Milan

AS Monaco Basket has started the 2024/25 EuroLeague season on a high note, crushing Olimpia Milano 93-80 in a home game at Salle Gaston Médecin.

Following a comfortable BetClic Elite win against Strasbourg at the end of September, the Roca Team opened their EuroLeague season on 3rd October by dominating Olimpia Milano. It was a bruising 93-80 victory for the Monegasque side, who had the benefit of a home crowd behind them.

Mike James, who was recently voted Most Difficult Player to Stop in the 2024/25 EuroLeague Team Captains’ Survey, was the first to score. The Rocas outscored the Italians in both quarters of the first half and headed into the locker room with a 47-26 advantage.

Milan fought back in the second half and took charge of the game. The two teams played a fierce back-and-forth, with Milan scoring more points than Monaco, but it was not enough to make up for the first-half deficit.

In the end, Monaco came out as the winner, and Coach Sasa Obradovic was the first to praise them for their efforts.

“It was a very good match,” he said post-game. “It met all my expectations. The team was physically in shape, and the players were very strong. It’s a group victory; congratulations to my players. It was important to win at home in the first match. It’s a good start. Mike only started training a few days ago; he had a very good match. I could [mention] all the players tonight.”

Top scorer for the Roca Team was Alpha Diallo, with 20 points to his name, followed by Élie Okobo on 14 points. There was then a three-way tie for third, with Furkan Korkmaz, Mam Jaiteh and Matthew Strazel all putting 10 points on the board.
