Basketball: Roca Team parts ways with Sasa Obradovic

After almost four years with AS Monaco Basket, Sasa Obradovic’s tenure with the Roca Team has come to an early end.

The Serbian former point guard’s contract had been set to expire at the end of the 2024/25 season, but following a lacklustre start in both the French Betclic Elite league and the EuroLeague, AS Monaco Basket’s management has decided to part ways with Obradovic earlier than expected.

The team has not formally commented on the reasons for this premature departure, instead releasing a statement that thanks the Roca Team’s former head coach for his years of service.

“AS Monaco Basket has decided to end its collaboration with coach Sasa Obradovic,” reads the statement. “Since joining this adventure in December 2020, Obradovic has brought discipline and worked tirelessly. His tenure saw two French championship titles, a French Cup victory, a EuroLeague Final Four appearance, and two European play-off qualifications.”

It continues, “Sasa Obradovic’s name is forever etched in the history of the Roca Team. The management and staff of the Roca Team sincerely thank him for his work and dedication.”

The 55-year-old Obradovic first worked with the team in December 2020 and went on to take the top job of head coach the following season.

Despite the team’s significant achievements under Obradovic, AS Monaco Basket has delivered lukewarm results in the current 2024/25 season. To date, the team sits in sixth place in the Betclic Elite standings and seventh in the EuroLeague table – a far cry from its former winning ways.

The role of interim head coach will be taken on by Manuchar Markoishvili, a former professional basketball player from Georgia who has been the Roca Team’s assistant coach since 2021.
