EFG Bank Monaco, reigning champions in the EFG Sailing Arabia – The Tour, had to share victory in the fourth stage with challenger Team Almouj Muscat in the penultimate leg of the contest. Eight international racing crews had set sail from Abu Dhabi bound for Doha, Qatar, on Thursday.
With four of the five legs that make up the 763-nm race around the Arabian Gulf now complete, EFG Bank Monaco remains in pole position overall, leading Team Almouj Muscat by just four points. EFG Bank Monaco skipper Thierry Douillard said their full focus would be on staying ahead of the second-place team as their quest for a fourth consecutive EFG Sailing Arabia – The Tour victory reaches a critical stage.
“For sure we are paying more attention to Team Al Mouj Muscat than the other boats, it’s part of the game,” he said. “They are fast and we’re both very close, so it’s going to be pretty tight. We have finished in front of Team Al Mouj Muscat four times from five finishes now and we just need to keep it like that until the end.”
The Red and Whites played a tough match at home against Montpellier Hérault Sport Club which ended in a 1-1 draw and saw Montpellier playing much of the match one man down.
