La Douleur

La Douleur (The Pain) is Marguerite Duras’s autobiographical account, of the terrible fear, despair and shame of living while waiting for the return of her husband who had been deported to a German concentration camp. Directed by Patrice Chéreau and Thierry Thieû Niang, and starring Dominique Blanc, member of the Comédie-Française. 

The Art of the Cinema: The Cabinet of Dr Caligari

Salle Garnier Place du Casino, Monaco

Enjoy a cine-concert of the 1920 film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari by Robert Wiene. This interesting example of German expressionist filmmaking is a must-see, and this event will be accompanied by an orchestral score. Organised by the Audiovisual Institute of Monaco in partnership with the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra.

Cautionary and comedic tale about the trials and pitfalls of offering advice to friends. Written by Didier Caron, with Christian Vadim, Marie Fugain, Manuel Gélin, and Juliette Meyniac.

The Art of the Cinema: Scattered Clouds

Meet up for a screening the then 1967 film Scattered Clouds by Mikio Naruse. Naruse is a filmmaker who highlighted women who suffer in silence, were entrapped or who found it impossible to find happiness. His cinema is nowhere better encapsulated than in his final picture, a work of exquisite beauty. 

The Normal Heart

As a mysterious illness sweeps through New York City’s gay community in 1981, lead character Ned Weeks speaks out against the discrimination facing the sick whilst at the same time watching helplessly as his lover slowly succumbs to the disease. A poignant look back at a time of fear and misunderstanding surrounding the AIDS epidemic, written by playwright Larry Kramer.
