The Prince’s Government has renewed its commitment to green living by extending and boosting the subsidies available for replacing old windows with improved versions. The updated scheme, effective 1st September, will remain in place until September 2028, offering enhanced support at a time when energy performance matters more than ever.
Since the programme began in 2020, over 1,100 windows have already been replaced under the scheme, testament to early success in encouraging energy-saving upgrades. Amid rising market prices, the Government has responded by raising grant ceilings: in certain circumstances, homeowners may now receive up to €900 per window. The aim is to ensure that homeowners—especially those in older properties—get better assistance and can more readily contribute to improving building performance.
Inclusive support, with particular emphasis on co-owned buildings
The scheme applies to all homes over 10-years-old, removing age as a barrier for most property owners. Additionally, there are targeted enhancements for co-ownership buildings governed by the Law n° 1.235, reinforcing support where collective action is most needed. This approach ensures both individual homeowners and collective bodies receive assistance to transition more sustainably.
Anticipating regulation and setting a clear deadline for change
This window-replacement programme aligns with upcoming regulatory requirements. From September 2028, single-glazed windows will be prohibited in existing buildings.
