Football: AS Monaco take top spot in Ligue 1 with win against Rennes

AS Monaco are on a roll, with wins in six of the team’s last seven matches. This stellar string of results puts them in first place in the Ligue 1 standings ahead of titans Paris Saint-Germain.

Their latest game took place against Rennes at the Stade Rennais at Roazhon Park on 5th October.

The action started early; just six minutes in, Monaco’s Thilo Kehrer scored a goal from the corner on an assist from the formidable Eliesse Ben Seghir, who has been involved in five goals in the last eight Ligue 1 matches, three of them his own.

The lead was short-lived though, as Rennes equalised with a goal by Ludovic Blas only six minutes later.

Folarin Balogun retook Monaco’s lead in the 22nd minute with an efficient chip shot that found its way into the net. This proved to be the final goal of the game, but it was not without excitement. George Ilenikhena nearly banged one in late in the game, as did Rennes’ Leo Østigård, but both went wide of the mark.

“We are happy with what we are producing, because when you look at last season, and especially the final sprint, we only conceded one defeat in 20 games,” said AS Monaco Coach Adi Hütter after the win. “We have shown a certain consistency in our matches and for that I am very happy with this young team.”

AS Monaco are now on a two-week international break, but will return to the Stade Louis II on 18th October where they will face off against Lille.

The Monegasque side has 19 points in the Ligue 1 tables, compared to PSG’s 17.
