Monaco’s first-ever women’s football derby was decided without a ball being kicked on Sunday after AS Monaco Football Féminin’s reserve team forfeited their fixture against Monaco United Women’s FC.
The highly anticipated match, scheduled for Sunday September 14th, was set to make as the Principality’s inaugural women’s derby in the opening round of the 2025/2026 Women’s Division 5 championship.
However, AS Monaco Football Féminin declared a forfeit for undisclosed reasons, with no official explanation provided. Under competition regulations Monaco United were automatically awarded a 3-0 victory.
While the forfeit offered three points to Monaco United, a strong boost to start their league campaign, it denied clubs and supporters the chance to witness this historic moment for women’s football in Monaco.
Alternative fixture arranged
To compensate for the cancelled derby, head coach Marco Simone quickly arranged an alternative fixture for his squad. Monaco United travelled to Nice on Sunday morning to face Club des Moulins in a friendly match, which they won.
“It is obviously disappointing that this first derby could not take place, as it was supposed to be a landmark moment for women’s football in Monaco,” said Simone. “We therefore had to adapt. This friendly match, which we won convincingly, allows us to regain positive momentum and continue our preparation for the rest of the season.”
The Italian coach viewed the substitute fixture as valuable preparation time, allowing him to assess players in match conditions and build team unity within his newly assembled squad.
For now, hopes rest on the return fixture scheduled for May when Monaco United will host AS Monaco Football Féminin’s reserve team at their home ground.
Meanwhile, Monaco United’s upcoming fixtures will be announced shortly
