From September 24 to 29, 2018, Gilles Tonelli, Government Counselor-Minister of External Relations and Cooperation, participated in the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly, held in New York.
On September 24, the Government Council attended the Nelson Mandela Peace Summit, which celebrated the centennial of his birth, in the presence of 70 Heads of State and Government and more than twenty Foreign Ministers. On this occasion, Gilles Tonelli delivered an intervention that he concluded with a quote from Nelson Mandela, on the power of sport to change the world, emphasizing that “this message of hope, LL.AA.SS. the Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene, both Olympians, continue to perpetrate it through their charitable actions.” This quote was made by Nelson Mandela during a visit to the Principality.
Mr. Tonelli took part in the high-level meeting on Financing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which brought together many politicians and leaders in the economic field. He also attended the meeting of the Security Council held at the level of Heads of State and Government, at the initiative of the United States who chaired it, and participated in a side event on the fight against plastic pollution.
During this UN week, the Government Counselor held numerous bilateral meetings with the Foreign Ministers of Vanuatu, the United Arab Emirates, Azerbaijan, the Baltic States, the French President’s Special Envoy and Coordinator. of the Presidential Council for Africa, the Minister of Tourism, Official Languages, La Francophonie of Canada, the First Lady of Niger and the Secretary General of the Union for the Mediterranean, to which he recalled certain guidelines set by SAS on Prince Sovereign, particularly with regard to pollution control, marine protected areas, water management and support to the IPCC.
During the meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Promotion of Malta, an agreement was signed between the Government of Monaco and the Maltese Government to avoid double taxation and to prevent tax evasion with respect to taxes on income.
