AS Monaco Basket claimed an important 81-76 win against LDLC ASVEL at Salle Gaston Médecin, in a game that also marked the return of star guard Mike James.
In a critical match for the Roca Team, LDLC ASVEL returned to Salle Gaston Médecin in a EuroLeague competition that could help carry Monaco further into their hopes for a playoff opportunity.
The Wednesday 8th April match also saw Mike James return to the lineup. In a must-win match, the team still faced the challenge of having a short roster. Although Mike James’ return did not prove to be at his optimal level, he had 5 points, 5 assists, and 5 rebounds, contributing as a team player.
Returning after a small team has spent several critical games finding their rhythm and chemistry can be an adjustment. Acting EuroLeague coach Manuchar Markoishvili addressed this difficult position for James’ return, stating, “they need Mike back in the rhythm” adding that he anticipates him integrating back in well with time and minutes played.
This 81-76 victory was a crucial step for Monaco to continue their aspirations for the play-in opportunity. With another game ahead this week, the performance highlighted areas Monaco must quickly improve.
The four quarters saw a mix of ups and downs for the Roca Team, as momentum would be found, before ASVEL would find their own rhythm to respond. Monaco struggled with field goals in the 1st quarter, shooting only 33.33%, and failed to convert opportunities, committing 11 turnovers, as consistency was not in the cards against ASVEL.
Late pressure tests Monaco
Despite building a double-digit lead, Monaco struggled to put the game out of reach. With under one minute remaining in the final quarter, ASVEL found themselves trailing by only 2 points, making it a one-possession game. With the fans acting as a sixth man, cheering, which was well-needed considering how small the bench is, Elie Okobo delivered a 3-point shot with 10 seconds remaining, extending Monaco’s lead to 5 points, ultimately securing the victory.
While Monaco led ASVEL in total rebounds, blocks, and steals, critical mistakes put them in a close position in that final minute, one that may not be so forgiving come Friday’s game against FC Barcelona.
Matthew Strazel led Monaco with 22, while Elie Okobo secured a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Nikola Mirotić added 14 points. With another important game ahead, the Roca Team must recover quickly and address the inconsistencies shown in this performance to take on another competitor fighting for their playoff spot.
