Olympic marathoner and Monaco resident Paula Radcliffe has barely had time to recover from the Riviera Water Bike Challenge on Sunday before heading over to Stade Louis II on Wednesday, June 7, for Global Running Day.

“I am organising a Monaco schools run in the morning at Stade Louis II,” Ms Radcliffe told Monaco Life, “with almost 300 kids from Saint Charles, la Condamine, des Révoires, Fontvieille and the International School of Monaco – two CP classes, four CE2 and five CM1. Together we will complete at least two marathons and probably 100 kilometres.”

In addition to the morning’s event, the IAAF is putting on an adult run at 12:30 pm, also at the stadium, and at 3 pm, with the Ecole d’Athletisme, there will be a continuous relay with the kids to see how far they can go. Anyone can join these two runs.

“People pledge globally how far they will run and the goal is to see how many kilometres they can run in 24 hours,” the world record holder for the women’s marathon explained. “Part of Global Running Day includes the Million Kid Run, which aims to get a million children around the world to have fun running.”

Last year, nearly 700,000 kids pledged to run nearly 15 million kilometres.

Global Running Day has taken place on the first Wednesday in June since 2009. This year’s edition will involve 170 countries and 829,129 people.
