Prince Albert II championed regional cooperation and marine conservation at Med9 Summit

Prince Albert II travelled to Croatia on Wednesday 7th October, attending the Med9 Summit in Split as the guest of honour. The informal alliance brought together nine Southern European Union member states to coordinate regional policy, currently under Croatia’s rotating presidency.

Discussions during the meeting focused on security, migration, energy, environmental protection, climate change, and diplomatic relations with southern Mediterranean nations.

Addressing the session titled ‘Building a Partnership for a Sustainable and Prosperous Mediterranean’, the Prince stressed the need for enhanced regional cooperation to tackle mounting environmental crises. He framed his address on three core principles: science, collective action, and financing.

He also highlighted Monaco’s longstanding marine conservation framework, pointing to regional initiatives such as the Ramoge, Pelagos, and Accobams agreements, alongside the MedFund.

Strategic priorities and European leadership

Alongside the regional environmental focus, French President Emmanuel Macron played a prominent role in driving the summit’s core political and economic agenda. Gathering alongside other southern EU leaders ahead of upcoming European Council discussions, Macron placed strong emphasis on European energy security, supply chain stability, and coordinated diplomatic positioning across the Mediterranean basin.
