Prince Albert II marks 20 years on the throne with celebration at the Palace

A large crowd of Monegasque citizens and residents gathered in Place du Palais on Saturday 19th July to mark the 20th anniversary of Prince Albert II’s reign, in a celebration organised by the Princely Palace.

The evening event, held between 6.30pm and 10.30pm, was the centrepiece of a commemorative day that reflected the Prince’s enduring connection with the Monegasque people. The square outside the Palace was transformed for the occasion, with security and access measures in place from midday and special transport arranged for registered guests, who included Monegasque citizens and residents of Monaco exclusively.

The Princely Family thanks the Monegasque people

The Princely Family – Prince Albert II, Princess Charlene, and their children Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella – appeared in the square to greet the assembled crowd. In a short address, Prince Albert thanked the Monegasque population for their support over the past two decades, noting the importance of unity and continuity in the Principality’s development.

A modest celebration with community at its heart

The celebration included light refreshments, with a large cake and red-and-white themed macarons shared among attendees.

The event was informal in tone and community-focused, in keeping with the Prince’s approach to public service throughout his reign.

Two decades of leadership and progress

Prince Albert II succeeded his father, Prince Rainier III, in April 2005. Since then, he has guided Monaco through a period of sustained urban, environmental and diplomatic growth.

His leadership has seen the advancement of major projects such as the Mareterra extension, the redevelopment of Casino Square, and a continued emphasis on sustainability and scientific research through institutions like the Monaco Scientific Centre.

A moment of reflection for the future of Monaco

The 20th anniversary celebration was not marked by official ceremony or state protocol, but instead offered a moment of reflection and appreciation shared between the sovereign and his citizens. It served as a reminder of the close ties between the Princely Family and the Monegasque community, and of the Prince’s continued commitment to the Principality’s long-term stability and wellbeing.
