A jetty on Port Hercules has been renamed in honour of one of the Principality’s most ardent proponents of the Monegasque language.
In the presence of Prince Albert, Mayor Georges Marsan and members of the Communal Council, as well as official representatives of the highest authorities of the Principality, the inauguration of the Jules Soccal Jetty (formerly Central T) of Port Hercules, took place on Thursday, July 6.
Mr Soccal’s daughter Josiane Campana and her grandson, Olivier, surrounded by friends and relatives, were also present for the event.
Born in 1907 in Monaco-Ville, Jules Soccal was a “Monegasque of blood and heart, who was an ardent defender of our language and our traditions,” the Mayor said.
After starting his professional career in a printing office, he joined the Communal Library and then the Cap-Fleuri nursing home. In the early 1950s, he joined the Naval Service as Secretary from where he was promoted to the position of Inspector of Fisheries and Maritime Security, then Chief of the Naval Secretariat in 1962, and later as Marine Administration Officer five years later, before retiring in 1972.
A great enthusiast of the sea and a keen fisherman, Jules Soccal also participated in numerous regattas, representing Monaco in Algiers, Ostend and Barcelona in particular. A Knight of the Order of St. Charles, Mr Soccal was very involved in the life of his country and initiated Monegasque language courses with Lazare Sauvaigo.
In 1971, he brought together his two passions by writing and publishing: “The Monegasque vocabulary of the navy and the sea.” He also wrote a short story and poems.
