Holiday celebrations in full-swing

The Monaco Town Hall has organised a number of “Covid safe” events to ensure a merry and bright Christmas for all this festive season.

Despite the current restrictions due to the health situation, the spirit of Christmas will be on full display this year in the Principality, though not in the usual way.

Since 20th November, residents and visitors have been able to enjoy the seasonal lights that illuminate each district after nightfall, giving a cheerful air to the chilly nights.

In addition, the esplanade of Quai Albert I is set to celebrate the magic of Christmas with nearly 250 fir trees and four attractions. There will be a carousel, duck pond fishing, a ride in the shape of a tree and another named the Caribou Ride-Santa’s Sleigh. The fun fair area will be open from 10am to 7:30pm from Friday 4th December to Sunday 3rd January.

The ice rink – a Monegasque winter staple – will also be open on 4th December at the Rainier III Nautical Stadium. With 1,000m2 of space, the ice rink takes five weeks to set up, but it is always worth the effort. Last year 28,674 skaters enjoyed the rink.

This year, the rules will be a little different, given the need to adapt to the health protocols, but fun can still be had. The rink can accommodate 200 people at a time and traffic must flow in a certain way as established by ground markers. Mask wearing is obligatory, and lockers and public areas will be disinfected regularly.

The rink will also host model-making mornings from 8am to 12pm on Sunday 13th December, 10th January, 24th January, 17th February and 21st February. It will also be the site of the Monaco skating championship on 6th March 2021.

For the smallest skaters, a 60m2 structure is being erected just for them. The ice rink will be open until 7th March 2021.

Princess Antoinette Park is also decked out in the spirit of the season for the first time. Christmas lights will be up until Thursday 3rd January and include a light trail and illuminated scenes, which can be enjoyed every day from 4pm until the park closes at 6pm.

New for this year, the Monaco Media Library is setting up workshops at the Metropole on the first three Wednesdays of December from 2pm to 6pm. The 2nd will feature a Christmas card workshop, the 9th is the Christmas Ball, and Christmas stockings feature on the 16th. The workshops are free, but space is limited so reservations are required. These can be made by emailing contact@metropoleshoppingmontecarlo.com or calling +377 92 16 77 01.

Happy holidays!

A perfect pairing

The Vistamar restaurant at the Hermitage Hotel continues to deliver on its promise of exciting new experiences, this time offering a gastronomic weekend with two Michelin star Chef Philippe Mille.
Executive Chef Jean-Phillipe Borrow has invited the Executive Chef of the Domaine Les Crayères into his Michelin star kitchen in Monaco, where the two masters will create an exceptional dinner and brunch on 24th and 25th October.
The idea for the pairing grew from a mutual friendship with two Michelin starred Chef Ronan Kervarrec.
The majestic splendour of the establishments within which they work is also a common factor between Jean-Phillipe Borrow and Philippe Mille. The Hermitage Hotel is Monaco’s famous “grande dame”, a luxurious five-star palace where romance and gastronomy collide. The Domaine Les Crayères is a spectacular Relais & Châteaux property in the heart of Reims that includes a five-star hotel and two restaurants: the Brasserie du Jardin and the two Michelin starred restaurant Le Parc. It sits adjacent to the Pommery champagne house and is a favourite among culinary travellers.
“The atmosphere that emerges from our two houses is similar: elegance and charm, inviting relaxation and epicureanism. This is what our customers also come looking for in our restaurants,” says Chef Phillipe Mille.

A mutual passion for fresh, local produce is also something the chefs share.
“Our respective kitchens come from the same DNA, which is respect and love for the product,” says Jean-Phillipe Borrow. “We are both committed to enhancing and refining the produce of our regions. We are also committed to bringing our cuisine into modernity to stay in line with our times and the desires of our guests.”
The collaboration is a unique opportunity for guests in Monaco to savour the cuisine of one of France’s finest chefs. Philippe Mille has been in the kitchens of Chefs Bordier, Grondart, Anton, and Roth. He was Yannick Alléno’s right-hand man at Le Scribe and then at Le Meurice. He delivered Domaine Les Crayères its first Michelin star in 2011, then a second in 2012. He is also a Meilleur Ouvrier de France and a Grand Chef Relais et Châteaux.
For October’s exceptional evening, Vistamar guests will be treated to one of Chef Mille’s signature artistic dishes – Langoustines from the Breton coast with Reims vinegar, carpaccio, caviar, a pink berry vinegar marinade, and a stained-glass shellfish coulis.
“This entrée pays homage to the Notre Dame de Reims Cathedral and to the know-how of the master glassmakers,” reveals Chef Mille.

Meanwhile, Chef Borrow will delight guests with a luxurious dish from the region: “A champagne risotto – a nod to Chef Mille, covered with the diamond of the Piedmont region – the Alba white truffle.”
Guests at the two-star evening on Saturday 24th October will be treated to a six-course menu, while the chic champagne brunch on Sunday 24th features a live cooking show by Chef Phillipe Mille on the Eiffel mezzanine.
Reservations are required.

Interview: Event organiser Gulshat Uzenbaeva

Monaco Life speaks to Gulshat Uzenbaeva, founder of LuxPro, a Monaco-based company that organises invitation-only events for business owners, top managers, and High Net Worth Individuals (HNWI).
What is the philosophy behind LuxPro?
We are a Monaco-based company that organises conferences and business talks with business people, business owners, clients and interested parties.
We focus on three main subjects: real estate, wealth management and finance, and luxury goods and services. Our events are an excellent opportunity to hear in-depth case studies and to gain insight into the latest trends.
We stage events in Switzerland, UK, Russia, Germany, Monaco and Dubai.
What have been your biggest achievements to date in Monaco?
We are a small structure but we have gained a lot of credibility in Monaco. We have had the support of the Monaco Economic Board from the very beginning, and its direction board makes speeches and presentations at all of our events.
Last year, I received an award at the International Congress of Real Estate and Investment in Munich for achievements in the field of Investment in Europe. This year, I was awarded ‘Best organiser of business events’ by Berlin Capital Club, and I was also awarded ‘Business woman of the year UK’ in London.

Summer piano recital at Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild

How have you been forced to adapt your events business due to the Covid crisis?
It has affected us a lot, because we had planned events in Dubai during the World Expo, which was postponed. We also planned events in Monaco during the Rolex Tennis Masters and throughout summer, but all were cancelled. So, we decided to launch an online version of our conferences.
Personally, I believe that the future of events will be online, but I see in practical terms that people are not completely ready to switch to online, they still prefer the traditional way of business networking.
What events have you managed to organise this year?
Without the main conferences, we have oriented towards more cultural events, which is what I was actually doing before I created LuxPro.
Our first post-quarantine event was a beautiful evening at Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild in St. Jean Cap Ferrat – a piano recital followed by a cocktail. It is like the proverb: “If bread is the first necessity of life, recreation is a close second.” I believe people need to eat, but they also need some action and entertainment, and that is why I think it is important to continue with our events.
Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild in St. Jean Cap Ferrat

A large part of your business is networking, so how do you manage the various companies who take part?
In our traditional LuxPro conferences, we accept only one representative per industry, for example one Monegasque real estate company and one foreign real estate company. There is never competition between companies because they deal in different markets, and the same applies for other industries as well – we have one private bank, one insurance company, one jewellery brand, etc.
Clients of a private bank are the same clients who are investing in the property business, or the same clients who need legal advice, so it is a small circle of clients. Companies are happy to meet potential clients during our events and also make partnerships with different companies.
How do you see the future of your business?
I see it being very international. We are already well represented in Europe, but there is a demand for events in the East, as well as in the Asian and US markets. The participating companies always come back to me and say they would like to continue, so it means the concept is working.
What makes LuxPro events different from other business networking events?
The difference is that we organise private events. We don’t sell tickets for our conferences. The only way to attend is if you are a company partner of the event, or if you are invited as a guest or client by the company who is taking part. This makes the guest list very selective.
What qualifies you to organise business networking events?
I have lived in Monaco for more than 10 years now and I have built up a strong network. I was previously in the private banking world and I also organised many large events with a number of high-profile guests during the official Year of Russia in Monaco.
Can you tell us about your next event coming up in October?
This Friday, 16th October, at the magnificent Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, we will organise another piano concert by talented Tatiana Smelova in a partnership with Mosaic Art and Music. Beethoven’s piano Sonata op.109 and selected works from Frank and Chopin will be followed by champagne and a special display of the dancing fountains. It will be a beautiful event for music lovers and social events admirers. I would like to be clear that we follow all of the required health protocols, so our clients can be safe but also enjoy this beautiful event.

Happy birthday Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel and Resort

In celebrating the past 15 years of the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel and Resort, Monaco Life was excited to learn about its future 15 years, and discovered some exciting projects on the horizon that will transform the peninsula as we know it today.
It was not the biggest 15th birthday bash that the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel and Resort would have hoped to host – given the ongoing Covid situation and, to a lesser extent, Sunday’s bleak weather. But it was a fantastic celebration nonetheless, featuring an extravagant 20+ course “brunch” prepared by Michelin star Chef Marcel Ravin and his team, endless glasses of Veuve Clicquot champagne, synchronised swimmers, a magician, DJ, ice-cream bar and a giant birthday cake.
“It is a very important moment for the staff, who have given a lot for this company,” General Director Frederic Darnot told Monaco Life. “We obviously couldn’t do a big party with Covid and the protocols, so we put all our efforts into this brunch.”

And it was a sold-out affair, with 180 of the resort’s loyal clientele joining in the celebration, lured by the return of the ‘Best Brunch in Monaco’, as voted by the people last year.
Much has been achieved by the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel and Resort in its relatively short existence. It has won numerous awards, achieved huge sustainability goals, and – most recently – took out the Best Hotel Pool in Europe.
Indeed, the turquoise, sand-bottomed lagoon is the most striking feature of this sprawling resort, which is set out over four hectares of landscaped gardens. In a country that is only two-square kilometres in size, it seems particularly brave of the Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer (SBM) Group to have carved out this oasis on the peninsula of Monaco.

“There used to be a summer cinema here, and a discotheque, Le Paradise, I remember dancing right there…” laughs Frederic, pointing to the courtyard.
The grandeur of the resort is also one of its famous features: the enormous foyer with giant arched windows that draw you to l’Orange Verte; the equally gigantic artworks by local artist Yaniv Edery; 332 rooms; the casino; the luxurious Suite Eleven; the Michelin star restaurant Blue Bay; and the Cinq Mondes spa.
Right now, there are 285 staff who make the resort run smoothly – far less than there would be in a normal year. But they all work to the same standard set by Frederic Darnot and SBM.

“It is thanks to all the staff, everyone works towards the same vision,” says Frederic. “We have 40,000 square metres of resort here, with a varied clientele – they come from the Orient, Eastern Europe, North America, the Middle East – that is one of our strong points.”
The resort has held the Green Globe certificate since 2014 and was awarded the prestigious Green Globe Standard certification in 2018. It is recognition of the staff’s continued efforts to manage energy and water resources more economically, to raise awareness and support actions in partnerships with other associations, and to strive to produce a healthier and more responsible cuisine.
The latter is a philosophy nourished by Executive Chef Marcel Ravin, who has been with the resort since the beginning. Marcel grew up in Martinique, cooking with the bounty that he and his grandmother gathered from their Creole garden. Today, the resort boasts its own organic vegetable garden that supplies the Michelin star restaurant. The restaurant is also a signatory of the Mister Good Fish initiative, promising to put underfished, seasonal species on the menu.
“I wanted to create a universe that resembles where my identity began, and I was lucky to be able to work in this environment and that the SBM trusted me,” Chef Marcel Ravin told Monaco Life. “I am living a daydream. This is why, even in difficult times, we remember what we have.”

In 2015, as the Blue Bay celebrated its 10th anniversary year, Chef Ravin was awarded his first Michelin star, propelling the restaurant into an elite club of the finest restaurants in Monaco.
It was the ultimate validation for a chef who has worked for two decades in the industry and who has uniquely blended Mediterranean cuisine with Creole influences, as well as for his team, which normally equates to around in 60.
“I talked with my team after getting back from Japan and I said, ‘Do you want a Michelin star?’ They said ‘yes’. So, I said again, ‘Do you want a Michelin star?’ They said ‘yes’. And for a third time I said ‘Do you want a Michelin star? They said ‘yes!’. So, we erased everything and started from a blank canvas. One year later, we got a Michelin Star,” remembers the chef fondly. “I am so lucky to have a wonderful team who understands me and are always here for me.”
Despite his achievements, Chef Ravin believes it is important to always set goals and to advance. “I come into my kitchen every day and it feels like I am in a boxing ring and I have to win the match,” he says. “You have to be able to get the best out of people around you and inspire them to believe we are capable of more.”
Receiving two Michelin stars is one of those goals, and the chef acknowledges that it is a difficult – although not impossible – task in such a large resort.

So, what do the next 15 years look like for the entire Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel and Resort?
“We have to rebuild the rooms, which is an enormous project, and we have the casino that has not reopened since it was closed during the lockdown – which we are perhaps repurposing,” reveals Frederic. “There is also the idea that we will connect with the Meridien Hotel to create one big resort, integrating the new Larvotto beach. It will be an entertainment zone with many more restaurants, a discotheque, a new Sporting, etc. So, it will be an entirely new complex.”

Sunday’s incredible birthday brunch ended in an important show of solidarity with the victims of Friday’s storms, with all remaining food donated to the Sospel Firefighters Association ‘solidarité Roya’.
Champagne Brunches will be held every Sunday at the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel and Resort from 12pm to 3pm.

Miró exhibition at NMNM

An exhibit of 65 works by the legendary Spanish painter, sculptor and ceramicist Joan Miró is on display at the New National Museum of Monaco, Villa Paloma, now through to the end of October.

In a posthumous return to Monaco, an exhibit by Joan Miró entitled La Peinture au Défi has come to the Principality featuring a large selection of works from the Spanish surrealist.

Hosted by the New National Museum of Monaco (NMNM), Villa Paloma, and curated by the Galerie Gmurzynska, the collection includes many interesting works including an original painting completed when Miró worked in Monaco with Diaghilev’s 1932 Ballets Rusees on Jeux d’Enfants,

“One of the merits of this exhibition is to remind us that the painter created the stage curtain, sets, costumes and props for the ballet Jeux d’enfants,” said Prince Albert II, whose foundation is a partner in the event “Knowing this enables us to fully appreciate the good fortune of the Monegasque public when the music of George Bizet, a libretto by Boris Kochno, choreography by Léonide Massine, the unparalleled talent of the Ballets Russes and the inimitable visual language of Joan Miró were brought together in the Principality in 1932. The stage photographs and correspondence between Kochno and the painter from the collection of the NMNM give evidence of this tremendous encounter.”
“This exhibition was born out of the time of Covid-19 in order to create some happiness in unruly times” curator Isabelle Bscher, co-owner of Galerie Gmurzynska, added “In his paintings, he offered escape from the horrors of the First World War, the Second World War and the Spanish Civil War. This exhibition spans from great dreamscapes of the 1920s to the work of the 1970s, which sometimes veer towards the destruction of painting. All through his life, Miró was a great revolutionary, all the while being a humanitarian opposing extremism and the repression of ideas.”
The show will run from now to 25th October and visitors can receive a fully illustrated catalogue with commentary and essays by the artist’s grandson, Joan Punyet Miró as well as Joachim Pissarro, Robert Lubar Messeri Jérôme Neutres, Clara Montero, Bernardo Laniado-Romero.

Formula E to finally use full F1 track in 2021

Formula E will be fought out on the full F1 Monaco street circuit in 2021, and ROKiT Venturi told Monaco Life it will make next year’s race even more special for the Monegasque team.
Formula E will form part of Monaco’s highly anticipated ‘Racing Festival’ next year, a magic trio which will also include the F1 Grand Prix and the Historic Grand Prix.
It will be the fourth time that Formula E has raced in Monaco but the first time it has used the full traditional track.
Previously, the championship used a bypass of the stretch from the Sainte Devote corner round to the tunnel, utilising a link behind the Tabac corner and a hairpin at the harbourfront chicane.
ROKiT Venturi Racing Team Principal Susie Wolff told Monaco Life that the move marks a significant step in the evolution of the 100% electric championship.
“It’s one of motorsport’s most iconic street circuits and as a series that is nearly entirely made up of street racing, I think it’s great that Formula E can now race the entire course. It’s also a sign of how far Formula E has come in terms of technological progress and the profile of the series.”

Earlier this month, Formula E CEO Jamie Reigle said he had hoped that racing on the main track would be possible next year. On Thursday, series founder Alejandro Agag confirmed it at an ABB virtual press conference.
“I can confirm that we will be racing on the complete circuit of the Monaco Grand Prix,” said the Spaniard, who is currently in Monaco. “I think this is another clear example of the progression of Formula E. I am really looking forward to it.”
The Monaco ePrix has been held every two years since 2015, alternating each season with the Historic Grand Prix.
Thursday’s announcement has given ROKiT Venturi even more reason to be proud of Monaco for hosting the event. “As our home race, anything that adds to the overall excitement and enjoyment of the Monaco ePrix is obviously fantastic for us,” said Ms Wolff. “It’s a race that means a lot to the team and one that our partners really look forward to. And with our newly refurbished headquarters ready, it will make the 2021 race even more special for us.”
Amid suggestions the circuit change may make it difficult for fans to distinguish between F1 and FE, Ms Wolff says the two series are still very different: “The beauty of Formula E is that the event schedule is condensed so fans can enjoy one whole day of non-stop action. Formula 1 takes over Monaco for at least five days, so I think both have their place on their respective calendars.”
In May 2018, the team signed a three-year deal with eleven time Formula One race winner Felipe Massa and rehired seven time Macau World Cup winner Edoardo Mortara as teammate to Massa.
The 2021 FE Championship calendar will kick off on 16th January in Santiago, Chile, before eventually making its way to Monaco on 8th May.
