Five nights of Mozart in Monaco

The Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra will be performing five concerts dedicated to the works of one of the classical world’s most prolific and famous composers, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, from the end of January.

Fans of the musical genius have something to look forward to this month as the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra (OPMC) is gearing up for a series of performances running from 27th January to 5th February with their Mozart in Monaco event.

The opening night will feature pianist David Bismuth accompanied by Liza Kerob on violin, Frederico Andres Hood on alto and cellist Thierry Amadi, who will be playing pieces by both Mozart and that other classical master, Ludwig von Beethoven.

Then on Sunday 29th, the OPMC’s Artistic and Musical Director Kabuki Yamada will be conducting an evening with pianists Lucas and Arthur Jussen and violinists Liza Kerob and Ilyoung Chae, who will be performing four Mozart classics.

Then on Tuesday 31st, the OPMC will be hosting a Musical Happy Hour featuring Matthieu Bloch and Martin Lefèvre on oboe, Marie Barrière-Bilote and Diana Sampaio on clarinet, Arthur Menrath and Michel Mugot on bassoon, Patrick Peignier and David Pauvert on horns, and Matthias Bensmana on bass. They will be playing extracts from all-time favourites, including from the Enchanted Flute and Don Giovanni.

On Friday 3rd February, a completely different concert will take place featuring Xavier de Maistre on harp under the direction of Bernard Labadie. The renowned harpist will perform three pieces by Mozart, which are sure to be as hauntingly beautiful as his instrument itself.

Finally on Sunday 5th, soprano Fatma Saïd will sing pieces by Mozart and Franz Schubert alongside pianist Martin Helmchen, violinist Antje Weithaas, cellist Marie-Elisabeth Hecker, and clarinetist Marie Barrière-Bilote.

Ticket prices start at €17, with Happy Hour prices running at €13. For reservations and more information, visit the OPMC website.

Truffle day at the Marché de Monte-Carlo

It’s prime truffle and chestnut season in the region, and the Marché de Monte-Carlo is celebrating both of these winter favourites with a special market in early February.

A day featuring these two gourmet treats will be coming to the Principality on 4th February as the market, found on Boulevard des Moulins, hosts sellers of locally sourced chestnuts alongside that most prized tuber, the truffle. Coming primarily from Aups, a town in the Var known for its medieval streets and truffle forests, stands selling the tuber melanosporum will be open to the public from 7.30am to 2pm.

At 10am, a live cooking demonstration will also be held where a chef will be whipping up a brouillade and panisse à la truffle.

Truffles can be eaten in a variety of ways, from finely grated into pasta dishes, infused in oil, whipped into eggs or thinly sliced atop a beautiful salad.

Alongside the truffle pedlars will be vendors offering tastings and sales of warming, roasted chestnuts, chestnut creams and chestnut liqueurs.

Admission is free and open to all, so come hungry and with a full wallet… Truffles don’t come cheap!

Louis Ducruet captains Barbagiuans to Fight AIDS Cup victory

Stars from the Principality and beyond gathered at the Stade Louis II for a memorable charity match on Monday, which saw the Barbagiuans win the Fight AIDS Cup for the first time.

Charles Leclerc, Didier Deschamps, Claude Puel, Fernando Morientes, Sonny Anderson and many more sports personalities, each inextricably linked to the Principality, competed in the match, which raises funds for Princess Stéphanie’s charity, Fight AIDS Monaco.

Glimpses of the past glory of some of these iconic players were on full display in front of a crowd that contributed to the success of the event, now in its third edition. Goals weren’t in short supply, with fans witnessing five in total.

With the beginning of pre-season Formula One testing approaching, Leclerc’s cameo was only brief, and it was only after his departure that the goals began to flow.

Sonny Anderson’s header was cancelled out by a strike from Arsenal legend Robert Pires just seconds later. However, prolific AS Monaco striker Morientes struck early in the second half to re-establish the Barbagiuans lead.

Ludovic Giuly, who featured over 250 times for Les Monégasques, then gave the Barbagiuans, in search of their maiden victory in the competition, a two-goal cushion with a neat finish.

Cirque FC got a late consolation goal through Clarence Seedorf who, just like in last year’s memorable event, stood out with flashes of skill and composure, befitting of a player that was once one of the world’s best.

However, it was the Barbagiuans who lifted the trophy, with Ducruet being handed the trophy by Prince Albert II for the first time.

“It’s nice to come together and to have fun for a good cause so we’re very happy,” succinctly summarised goal-scorer Giuly after an event that once again offered an enthralling spectacle in the name of a charitable cause.

Dominant Sébastien Ogier wins ninth Monte-Carlo Rally

Sébastien Ogier led from start to finish on his way to securing his ninth Monte-Carlo Rally victory in just 14 years, overcoming last year’s disappointment in what he described as a “perfect weekend”.

The Frenchman was denied the title last season, with a mechanical issue on the final day putting pay to his ambitions. Instead, it was the legendary veteran and his teammate Sébastien Loeb who took the title. But there was no denying Ogier this year, who stood atop the top step of the podium for the ninth time in Place de la Casino on Sunday 22nd January.

Following the presentation of the cars last Thursday night, the grid made its way up to the mountains and towards the Col de Turini. Here, Ogier and his co-pilot Vincent Landais raced into an early lead ahead of Welshman Elfyn Evans.

Ogier’s domination continued into Friday, as he won four of the six stages, building a nine-second gap to Evans in second and a 23-second gap to third-placed Kalle Rovanperä.

However, Finnish driver Rovanperä hit back on the Saturday, winning three of the six stages and closing the gap to 16 seconds. Ogier’s lead was still considerable, but not unassailable, and if he was to overcome last year’s disappointment, he would have to work for it going into the final day.

Rovanperä’s comeback acted as a wakeup call for Ogier, who in the early hours of Sunday morning, struck back, extending his lead once again on his way to an ultimately comfortable victory.

On his way to taking his ninth Monte-Carlo Rally title, Ogier picked up nine stage wins out of a possible 18, becoming only the fourth driver to pull off such a feat in the 21st century.

Reflecting on the victory post-race, Ogier paid homage to his co-pilot, Landais.

“It’s a good time with the whole team, with Vincent, and it was his first victory in Monte-Carlo, I think he had tears in his eyes. He is very proud today, and he deserves it,” he said.

The Monte-Carlo Rally, the curtain-raiser to the 2023 World Rally Car calendar, provided an unmistakable sign of Ogier’s dominance. As the grid heads to Sweden, it is clear that the Frenchman will be difficult to beat this year.

Drone show to feature in Sainte Dévote celebrations

In line with Monaco’s sustainable ethos, a drone show will replace fireworks as the entertaining aspect of Sainte Dévote celebrations this week.

With all Covid-related health restrictions lifted, it will be the first time in two years that the public will be able to properly participate in Sainte Dévote festivities this year.

On the forecourt of Place Sainte Dévote, they will be able to attend the Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. The ceremony will be broadcast live on screen at 7pm.

The public is then invited to move to a secure area on Quai Albert Ier to watch the traditional burning of the boat.

From there, they will be able to witness the drone show accompanied by sound, organised by the Mairie de Monaco.

At around 8:15pm, 100 luminous drones will fly in the Monegasque sky above the Prince’s Palace. The unique show, lasting eight minutes, will revolve specifically around Sainte Dévote and will illustrate different symbols related to this traditional festival.

Access is controlled and free.
