The Olympic flame is coming to Monaco

For the second time ever in history, the eternal Olympic flame will be coming to the Principality of Monaco later this month as the torch makes its journey through the Riviera and on to Paris.

It has been confirmed that Monaco will be welcoming the Olympic flame on Tuesday 18th June as part of its route through the Alpes-Maritimes.

The visit will go down in history as the torch’s second-ever visit to the Principality, following its first official appearance here back in 1968, ahead of the Grenoble Winter Olympics.

The flame will begin its brief Monaco stop-off in Port Hercule at 2.15pm. Six torchbearers will then take their turn in carrying the eternal flame up to the Palais Princier de Monaco for a scheduled 2.45pm finish.

Prior to Monaco, the flame will be making a stop in the mountain village resort of Valberg. The next destination after the Principality will be Antibes-Juan-les-Pins.

Monaco’s Prince Albert II is the president of the Monegasque Olympic Committee and has been a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) since 1985.

He has participated in five Winter Olympics as part of Monaco’s bobsleigh team and first carried the Olympic flame in 1996, ahead of the Atlanta Summer Olympics. The Prince has since been a torchbearer nine more times for both Summer and Winter Games.

Prince Albert’s wife, Princess Charlene, is a former Olympian herself. She swam for South Africa at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

The Monegasque Olympic Committee was established in 1907 and sent its first delegation to the Summer Olympics in 1920. The following year, in 1921, Monaco hosted the Women’s Olympiades in a demonstration of the nation’s early support for female athletes.

Since its initial Olympic participation in 1920, Monaco has sent delegations to 21 Summer Olympics and 11 Winter Olympics.
