Prince and Minister speak at first Mediterranean of the Future conference
Jean-Yves Le Drian, France’s Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, spoke at the first “Mediterranean of the Future” conference in Marseille on Tuesday, November 21. The event was planned on the initiative of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region.
HSH Prince Albert, Renaud Muselier, President of the Regional Council and numerous ministers and key Mediterranean figures, as well as representatives of the European Commission and the Union for the Mediterranean, also took part.
The conference is open to public and private actors recognised for their contribution to defining and outlining innovative and ambitious solutions in the Mediterranean region. This first conference was focused on the shared commitment of Mediterranean stakeholders to combating global warming and achieving the goals set by the climate agreements, notably the Paris Agreement.
The minister stressed the need to increase the involvement of entrepreneurs, innovators and creators from civil society in our collective efforts to develop a shared space in the Mediterranean.
The ministry supports more than 300 French communities involved in approximately 700 decentralised cooperation projects with a dozen Mediterranean Basin countries as well as civil society organisations and firms operating in the Mediterranean region, notably through “regional multi-stakeholder networks” in the process of being formed in the 13 French regions, according to the French government.

Swiss millionaires in low cost housing
Zurich, the richest city in Switzerland, has discovered that among the 9,000 homes designated for those in need, many are currently occupied by millionaires.
Having found out at the end of 2014 that 132 millionaires were living in ‘social housing,’ the city authorities have introduced a maximum annual income of 200,000 euros to qualify for municipal housing, according to local newspaper Neue Zurcher Zeitung.
Since 2011, the city has insisted that one-third of homes in new developments should be made available to those on low incomes. The authorities had failed to check on the eligibility of those who moved in to social housing before that date.

France’s motorway toll charges set to rise by more
Toll charges on French motorways are due to rise on February 1 by a bigger amount than in the past two years, when the increase was limited to one percent each year.
According to a report in the Journal de Dimanche, the average increase will be between 1.03 and 2.04 percent, depending on the region. While the newspaper had access to these Ministry of Transport internal documents before the weekend, they will be made public on Thursday at a meeting of the Road Users Committee.
The regional variation in increases will depend on whether the operators have carried out major projects on their networks, to be financed by toll charges. Otherwise the tolls are regulated by the prevailing rate of inflation.
