Major incident and rescue exercise in Monaco station

A joint exercise involving emergency rescue teams from Monaco and France took place close to the Monaco Monte-Carlo railway station on the night of December 14 to 15. The exercise was to coordinate the response to a hypothetical emergency in the tunnel from Cap d’Ail.

The scenario of was based on an explosion followed by a fire in a gas tank on a construction site in the railway tunnel and the subsequent evacuation of casualties.

On the Monegasque side, the Department of the Interior, the Corps of Firefighters of Monaco, the Carabiniers of the Prince, Public Security, the Monaco Red Cross, and the Princess Grace Hospital all took part.

The French side was represented by the Prefecture of the Alpes-Maritimes, the Interministerial Service of Defence and Civil Protection, the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service of the Alpes-Maritimes, the SNCF and the National Gendarmerie.

The 10th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between Monaco and Cuba was celebrated in Paris on December 15 at the Monegasque Chancellery.

Surrounded by their respective diplomats, His Excellency Claude Cottalorda, Ambassador of the Principality of Monaco in France, and HE Elio Eduardo Rodriguez Perdomo, Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba in France, celebrated the event in a warm and convivial atmosphere.

Mr Cottalorda recalled the historic ties of friendship between the two countries and pointed out that the theme of the 2016 Rose Ball was that of Cuban culture in general and Havana in particular.

The Ambassador underlined the common challenges faced by the two states, particularly in the face of climate change, and hoped that the fight for the preservation of the oceans would become an axis of cooperation between the two countries.

Mr Perdomo, for his part, referred to the private visit of His Excellency Prince Albert to Cuba in 2001 and highlighted the opportunities for developing bilateral economic and sports relations.

The reception continued with Cuban musicians. Guests enjoyed Monegasque specialties and mojitos and shared a pleasant moment to perpetuate the excellence of relations between the two countries.

The Principality of Monaco and the Republic of Cuba established Diplomatic Relations on December 19, 2007, with a joint declaration.

The National Basketball League, Sport Plus Conseil and AS Monaco Basket announced the selection of Paul Lacombe, Amara Sy, Gerald Robinson and Zvezdan Mitrovic for the 2017 All Star Game, which will take place on December 29 at the Accor Hotels Arena in Paris.

Gerald Robinson has been selected for All Stars foreigners, Paul Lacombe and Amara Sy for the French All Stars team, while Zvezdan Mitrovic has been selected as coach of the Foreign All Stars side.

The jersey ceremony for the official selection took place at the Salle Gaston Médecin at Stade Louis II during the match on Saturday, December 16, between AS Monaco Basket and the Sharks of Antibes, the 13th day of Pro AT.

The leader of the French Pro A Championship, AS Monaco beat the Sharks 84-76. Their next game is Tuesday at 6:30 pm against Hapoel Holon.

Monaco’s new municipal sports facility will open its doors in January, local French-language daily Monaco-Matin reports.

A total of €700,000 has been invested to renovate, upgrade and extend the Monaco Fitness Center Guy-Mierczuk, situated next to the Rainier III swimming pool. A variety of fitness classes and activities such as aqua bike will be on offer. Top end sports equipment has been installed, the Town Hall said,

Every effort has been made to keep down the cost to the public, with a single entry costing €25 and weekly, monthly, and annual subscriptions available, from €95 to €950.

Pelagos Agreement funds three international projects to protect marine mammals

Following the call for projects launched this year and the seventh Meeting of the Parties to the Pelagos Agreement, held on Tuesday, December 12, at the Auditorium Rainier III, the three signatories have selected three scientific projects aimed at deepening knowledge of marine mammals and putting in place adequate and effective protection measures in the protected part of the Mediterranean.

The three projects financed by €250,000 and supported by France, Italy and Monaco, will be launched at the beginning of 2018 and managed by teams from the three countries.

The missions are “Pelagos Plastic Free – Integrated Actions to Reduce Plastic Debris in the Sanctuary”, “Biological and toxicological contamination of cetaceans in the Pelagos Sanctuary: assessment, origin, monitoring and impact reduction measures”, and “A proposal to develop and evaluate strategies to reduce the risk of collisions with fin whales and sperm whales in the Pelagos Sanctuary”.

CREM, the Foreign Residents’ Club of Monaco, is organising several events for members in the New Year, starting with The Ballets de Monte Carlo in The Taming of the Shrew on Thursday, January 4, in the Salle des Princes at the Grimaldi Forum. A number of excellent seats are available for €29 to members.

On Friday, January 12, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra will be performing at the same venue. Mahler’s Symphony Number 10, first movement, and Berlioz’s Symphony Fantastique are on the repertoire. Only 16 seats are available to members, in Category 1, at €126 each. Both events start at 8 pm.
