Free sensuality workshop Sunday

christmas-market-563199_1920Saturday, December 2, would appear to be kicking off the festive season in Monaco.

The annual Ecumenical Kermesse – with over 25 stalls – takes place in the Fontvieille Chapiteau from 10 am until 6 pm. Free entry.

Over at 18 rue Grimaldi, Terres méditerranéennes is teaming up with Mothers of Africa for a one-day Christmas market, which is also offering a children’s workshop, from 10:30 am to noon, for ages 5 and up to make “mariote e gali”, small tradtional puppet-like figures. Cost: €10/child or €8 for members. Bring aprons.

At 6 pm, the association Ars Antonina is organising the Virtuosi Children Christmas Concert at the Théâtre des Variétés. The yearly event is performed by talented musicians, all under the age of 13, who are students of the Rainier III Academy of Music and Departmental Conservatories. Free entry with reservation (06 03 44 20 66).

The annual production of Handel’s Messiah, as performed by the Ristretto Chamber Choir and Instrumental Ensemble and directed by Errol Girdlestone, starts at 8 pm at St Paul’s Church. Tickets €30 from FNAC or Carrefour, or at the door based on availability.

On Sunday, December 3, the free monthly wellbeing series courtesy of Stars’n’Bars ECOHUB continues with the theme of “Sensuality”.

The program of conferences, which are held at StarDeck, run from 1 pm to 6 pm, include Dr Danièle Massobrio Macchi with an “Initiation to sacred sexology according to the TAO” (1 pm) followed at 2 pm by Marie Noelle Maston, a Psychologist Paris/Sorbonne on “Haptonomy: The Science of Affectivity.”

Iridologist and Nutrition Advisor Christiane Brych will talk about “Sensuality & Food” at 3 pm, while Clinical Sexologist Pascal Benoist discusses “The Origins of Sensuality” at 4 pm. The event closes with Francoise Vrel, Transgenerational Psychoanalyst, talking about “Eroticism, on Edge” (5 pm).

Also on Sunday, at 3 pm, the first of two performance of I Puritani, an opera in three acts by Vincenzo Bellini, will take place in the Salle Kreizberg at Auditorium Rainier III with Monte Carlo Opera and Philharmonic Orchestra.

Libretto by Carlo Pepoli, based on Tetes Rondes et Cavaliers by Jacques-Francois Ancelot and Xavier-Boniface Saintine.

Monaco Red Nose Day December 6, only a few days left to buy your nose

The Monegasque association “Les Enfants de Frankie” is organising the 13th edition of “Monaco Red Nose Day”.

Help support children in need in the region on Wednesday, December 6 – Saint Nicolas Day – by attaching a “nose” onto your car that day. The yellow nose represents the optimistic temperament of Frankie the Clown, the mascot of the association.

The sponge noses are available for €2 from Carrefour Monaco and at various post offices across the Principality, from November 4 to December 2.

Les Enfants de Frankie is thankful its loyal partner, EFG Bank Monaco, which has supported the association since 2007, as well as the emoticon giant, Smiley World Limited, for its collaboration.

Their annual Charity Night – “Kids Nite” – invites families in Monaco and the region to take part in a gala evening specially organised for their children. This year, this takes place December 16.

Christmas lights turned on in Monaco

On Friday, November 24, in the presence of the mayor, members of the municipal council, the Minister of the Interior Patrice Cellario, and residents of A Qietüdine retirement home, Monaco’s Christmas lights were officially turned on at 6 pm at Place d’Armes.

This year, the Communal Council also wished to associate the event with Friends of the Blood Donors of Monaco. Members of the Board of Directors, as well as young donors, were on hand.

Mayor Georges Marsan pointed out that “as early as September” state-employed electricians were working in collaboration with Blachère Illumination to install the lights.

“Thanks to their work, the magic of Christmas is delivered every year,” the mayor said. “We have for several years decorations exclusively equipped with LEDs which allows us to reduce the power consumption and to bring an additional luminous sparkle to the decorations.”

The official party and elected officials were driven through the streets of the Principality in order to discover the various decorations aboard a vehicle provided free of charge by the Compagnie des Autobus de Monaco.

In other news from the Town Hall, the next public meeting of the municipal council will take place on Wednesday, November 29, at 6 pm.
The agenda for this session will include consideration of:
– Draft Regulatory Amendments to Sovereign Ordinance no. 4.482 of September 13, 2013, (recast no. 9).
– Draft amending Sovereign Ordinance no. 3.647 of September 9, 1966 and its annexes.
– 2018 rates (municipal police, social action service, municipal sports service and associations).
– points about the exotic garden.

From Monaco to Peru: local runners head to inaugural Marathon des Sables

On Tuesday, November 28, the first Marathon des Sables (MDS) Peru will kick off.

The concept is the same as the famous MDS Morocco footrace: running 250 km in 6 stages over 7 days in a desert environment while carrying all your own food. The difference will be the terrain (canyons, huge dunes) and weather conditions (maybe a little less hot than in Morocco).

Two local figures in Monaco’s sports scene will be at the Start in Peru on Tuesday.

No Finish Line’s Philippe Verdier, an avid runner, did the MDS in 2013, 2014 and 2015, placing 15th twice and 16th, although first in his age category. “I like the idea of total autonomy, being cut off from the world for seven days,” Philippe told Monaco Life.

He shared that he’s become friends with MDS organisers Patrick and Marie Bauer, and with their association Solidarite Marathon des Sables, No Finish Line (NFL) has financed the construction (in progress) of a sports centre for 300 underprivileged children in Ouarzazate, Morocco.

Philippe said this year’s edition of NFL was met with great enthusiasm, “breaking two beautiful records”: the number of registered 14,260 participants and the number of kilometres completed – 436,963.

“It was an extraordinary atmosphere with everyone united by the same cause – to support disadvantaged or sick children. It will be difficult to beat these numbers … but we say that every year, and every year we do!”

For Philippe, running in the Ica-Paracas desert will be fantastic, with landscapes that will be even more grandiose than in Morocco. “My wife will be volunteering during the event so it’s going to be a new and beautiful adventure for us to share.”

Also sharing the adventure is Monaco-resident Steve Gale of Gale Force Computing. Steve, who was one of 49 people to complete all ten editions of the Nice-Cannes Marathon on November 5, just completed his first MDS in Morocco a few months back. (Two other Monaco residents participated in that same race.)

He told Monaco Life, “I assumed that most of the race would be on gravel tracks and that the sand dunes you see in the photos were just for publicity. In fact most of the race is on real sand and very little on solid ground. Very hard with a full backpack.”

Like Philippe, Steve took a 7-hour bus trip from Lima to the bivouac on Sunday, and had technical checks on Monday, the day before the race. “Having done the MDS in April, I felt ready for another challenge. And being part of the very first MDS in Peru seemed like an excellent opportunity, especially as I have never been to South America before.”

Editor MDS, also talked to Monaco Life about the inaugural edition. “The Marathon Des Sables Peru responds to the recurring demands of our competitors to discover new deserts, and runners from the American continent to benefit from a course similar to MDS, but closer to home.”

The Ica-Paracas desert “was love at first sight,” said Patrick Bauer, creator of the MDS.

In eight months, 300 participants from 40 countries covering all continents signed up. Twenty elite women and men will be competing for the podium, including ultra-trailers at the highest level worldwide. Nearly 40 international media have been accredited.
