The New National Museum of Monaco (NMNM) is presenting an exhibition of recent acquisitions made with the support of UBS Monaco on the third floor of Villa Paloma.

Eleven works are on show out of the 19 acquired within the partnership: those of Matti Braun, Nathalie Du Pasquier, Francesco Gennari, Apostolos Georgiou, Jef Geys, João Maria Gusmão, Pedro Paiva, Roland Flexner, Jean-Michel Sanejouand and Daniel Steegmann Mangrané.

UBS has been supporting NMNM exhibitions for the past six years as a lead partner, and its commitment has been extended to enriching and sustaining national collections of contemporary art. This presentation of the collection is one of the highlights of the national museum’s 2018 programme, the NNMM says.

The UBS endowment has allowed the museum, in addition to the budget allocated by the State, to develop its collection of important work conceived by living artists, corresponding to the major themes that guide the museum’s acquisitions policy.

The arts, sciences and techniques, especially in the context of the history of photography and cinema, and landscape as a mental construction and no longer natural, form part of the museum’s focus.

The Extraordinary Meeting of the Parties to the Pelagos Agreement was held on February 9, 2018, at the Rainier III Auditorium in Monaco, chaired by Cyril Gomez, Director General of the Department of Public Works, the Environment and Urban Development.

The event was attended by representatives of the three member countries – France, Italy and Monaco – as well as observers.

The meeting agreed to financial activities of the last three years, the report of the expenditures in 2017 and approved the programme for 2018 and 2019.

Among the resolutions adopted, a number related to the standardisation of research methods on marine mammal populations in the Pelagos Sanctuary – including satellite telemetry – as well as the terms of reference for assessing the impacts of plastics on marine mammals and for the identification of plastic accumulation in the Sanctuary.

The Parties decided to continue to strengthen cooperation with the municipalities and marine protected areas within the Pelagos Sanctuary as well as with the Marine Mammal Sanctuaries beyond them.

An international workshop bringing together the different actors for the marine environment will also be held at the end of 2018, in Italy, to discuss possible solutions to reduce the risk of collisions between ships and large cetaceans.

Recognition for campaigns against plastic

The jobless rate in mainland France has fallen to 8.9 percent, down 0.7 points in the fourth quarter of 2017, having increased by 0.2 points in the third quarter of 2017 to 9.3 percent. Year-on-year, the decline was 1.1 percentage points.

Particularly satisfying for the French government is the fact that, according to INSEE, the French state statistics agency, all age groups are affected by the drop. The biggest overall fall in the jobless rate was for young people, 15-24 years old, for whom the unemployment rate fell by 2.8 points over one year to 20.7 percent.

Unemployment is now at its lowest level since early 2009, with an average 2.5 million unemployed in mainland France, 205,000 unemployed fewer.

INSEE announced on Wednesday, February 14, that 253,500 jobs were created in the private sector over the whole of 2017, an increase of 1.3 percent over one year. The French growth rate was 1.9 percent for the whole of 2017, its highest level in six years.
