MyMonacoStyle Weekend Report

Happy Monday to all you Premium Subscribers! Hope you had a wonderful weekend! I laid low. With the Cannes Film Festival and Grand Prix fast approaching, I just can’t see the sense in expending a whole lot of energy or effort before the festivities begin. It would seem I’m not the only one in this mindset: the mood over the weekend in the Principality was very casual as people were less into putting on a grand show and more interested in just plain old living.

Sky-high Louboutins were swapped out for sneakers and button-ups replaced with t-shirts. Call it athleisure, call it lowkey luxury, but this weekend was Monaco’s answer to a “casual friday” at the office. Sometimes dressing down is the new dressing up, and it’s refreshing. These are my favourite leisure looks of the weekend.

Michaela Akesson

@michaela.ak Somewhere someone is still trying to argue that leggings are not pants and in 2018 that argument is null and void now that the athleisure industry is worth billions. Michaela furthers that point for me in a chic ensemble of black legging and a white t-shirt. To keep the outfit from looking too gymwear, she throws a cream blazer on top to dress it up. Accessorised with a gold classic Chanel bag and Gucci Ace sneakers, she gives the impression of a lady who lunges and a lady who lunches after. The key to the perfect athleisure look is to add in high end items to give it that refined look. Oh Michaela, I love your Game of Tones.

Lyes Hamilton

@lyes_hamilton It’s no secret that Gucci is my favourite brand at the moment and anybody wearing it is instantly a style star in my books. Lyes is decked out in some of the trendiest essentials of the moment. Gucci logo t-shirt – check! Gucci Ace sneakers –check and check! Paired with a pair of black motorcycle zip jeans and a Louis Vuitton Damier Graphite Toilet Pouch give it that city slicker vibe that’s sure to look right at home in a matte black Lamborghini. The great thing about luxury t-shirts is that they’re versatile. Throw one on with your swimsuit or under a blazer and you’re ready to pop bottles at JimmyZ. My eyes see you Lyes. Show the kids how it’s done!

fuscogianluca

Gianluca Fusco

@fusco_gianluca Aloha Gianluca, I see we share a favourite Starbucks drink as well as a penchant for Hawaiian shirts. Not going to lie, once upon a time I shunned the grandparents vacation wear but then a few years back, when Hedi Slimane showed Hawaiian shirts in his collection for Saint Laurent, he had me digging through every vintage store in the Marais in Paris. This sunset reiteration on Gianluca goes great with his complexion and will continue to as the summer bronze sets in. A classic pair of Ray-Ban Wayfarers add further to the 1950s vintage Hawaii mood, however, we are promptly brought back to modern day with his Kanye West designed Adidas Marble Cake Yeezy Boost 350 sneakers. With his tattoos and earrings, we may just be looking at Monte Carlo’s new fashion bad boy dark horse, sorry GMK kings don’t stay on their thrones forever.

mrsanag

Ana

@mrs.ana_g Boutique owner Ana joins the #GucciGang as the most #Guccified of the bunch. Possibly making a personal as well as style statement, Ana dons a pair of Gucci Blind For Love round sunglasses but I’m afraid that she may be literally blind as she’s in the middle of the road! Body con is NOT what’s on for the weekend as she opts for a red t-shirt dress, a good choice as she chooses her accessories to be the focal points of her outfit. A beautiful blue velvet Gucci Marmont bag slung casually across brings some night to the day but what really has Ana standing out from the Gucci Gang is her sneakers – these are not the €500 Aces everyone else is rocking, these are the Rolls Royce of the Gucci Ace sneaker, €1000 complete with Swarovski crystal embedded platform. Okay Ana, put the competition to shame and leave them in the dust running to their local Gucci store.

luganasLuganas

@luganas This Hot Wife & Crazy Mom was running around Monaco looking crazy hot this weekend. Never one for overly fussy looks, Luganas looked fresh in a kelly green sweater that she matched to her Hermès Kelly bag in colour Bamboo. Saint Patrick’s Day may be long gone but she’s not taking any chances. Keeping up with her self-assigned colour palette, she rocks a pair of green velvet Gucci Princetown loafers with fur with striped tracksuit bottoms. Casual and comfortable but keeping in mind that in Monaco the devil is in the detail, she perfectly epitomizes weekend style.

British Royal Wedding event presents Monaco with Challenge

A new non-profit Association, Monaco Challenge, will be holding its launch event to coincide with the British Royal Wedding on May 19.

The initial event is the Monaco Tree Challenge, which is to plant a tree, over time, for every citizen and resident of Monaco – a total of 37,500 people. There will be other challenges to come.

The venue is the Star Deck above Stars’n’Bars, where from noon guests can watch the wedding on the big screen. “There will be drinks and food, and everyone will be given a ‘tree kit’ to plant a tree, and chocolate which benefits the project,” the organisers say. There will also be the opportunity to donate a sum which will count towards tree planting elsewhere.

The challenge supports Plant for the Planet’s campaign to plant a trillion trees globally. For each tree kit Forest Nation will plant another tree.

Plant for the Planet has been planting trees globally since its formation by 9-year-old Felix Finkbeiner in 2008, in locations from the Philippines to Namibia. The organisers of the Monaco Challenge thank Landmark Trust – an independent provider of trust and fiduciary services – for their support of the Monaco Tree Challenge.

To be “a part of hisTREEy” and the Monaco Tree Challenge at Stars’n’Bars (€30/person), RSVP before May 15 to monacochallenge@monaco.mc.

‘Housing first’ for Enfants du Pays, say National Council chiefs

The President of the National Council, Stéphane Valeri, and Franck Lobono, President of the elected body’s Housing Commission, have said that they welcome the decision of the Government to accept – with its own changes – the bill, passed unanimously in the Council’s previous term, defining the concept of Enfant du Pays (child of the country) to describe French citizens who have been continuously resident in Monaco.

They said that although this is a step in the right direction, it is purely symbolic and fails to establish any concrete rights for those concerned.

“It’s clear that in the specific area of housing the proposed law does nothing,” they said. What is important today for the Enfants du Pays is above all the question of their housing and thus of their ability to maintain their residence in the Principality.

They also criticised the Government’s “too restrictive” definition, which not only requires birth in Monaco and continuous residence but also that at least one parent has been born in the Principality and resided continuously, at least until the child’s birth.

“For us, anyone born in Monaco and who has lived here without interruption since birth is a child of the country.”

They added that they will endeavour to implement a concrete policy for the children of the country. They said that the first step must be to counter the threats to the protected sector.

They suggest that enfants du pays should be second only to Monegasques in being awarded preference in the allocation of state housing.

“For human and social reasons, as well as in the economic interest of the country, we believe that the future of the Principality lies in the social mix, that is the cohabitation of Monegasques and children of the country – sharing the same culture and the same attachment to Monaco – with communities of wealthy foreigners who are welcome. We will soon be tabling a bill to make the protected sector permanent,” they promised.

theatre princesse grace

For the first time, the Princess Grace Theatre is hosting a creative residency with comedian and director Thomas Le Douarec, who chose to adapt Dostoevsky’s The Idiot. He will present it in preview on Monday, May 7, at 8:30 pm. The play will then be performed in Avignon and Paris.

Rehearsal sessions will be open to the public on Thursday, May 3, and Friday, May 4, between 4 pm and 6 pm, with free access. Theatregoers will be able to stay for as long as they wish, provided they do not disturb the actors in their work.

An “after-work” aperitif after Friday’s rehearsal will allow those present to meet the troupe. This is also free, on registration by email with François Larini.

Finally, following the success of the Portrait of Dorian Gray last season, the troupe will perform the play in English on Tuesday, May 8, at 8:30 pm, also at the Princess Grace Theatre.

Monaco Life readers invited to track down rare plant

Photo: Department of the Environment

As France celebrates the Fête du Travaille on May 1 with the tradition giving a lily-of-the-valley (muguet) to loved ones, the Department of the Environment invites Monaco Life readers to participate in a tracking programme. The target is the rare Nivéole de Nice, an endemic vegetal species found in the Alpes-Maritimes. The plant is protected in France and Italy and included in appendix I of the Convention of Bern.

A local action plan for the safeguarding and management of the Nice Nivéole has been developed for the next three years by the Department of the Environment, in partnership with the National Botanic Conservatory of Porquerolles (CBNMed) and the Mediterranean Institute of Biodiversity and Marine and Continental Ecology (IMBE).

This programme, which runs until 2020, has several components, including a comprehensive identification of all the populations of the plant in Nice and Monaco. For areas that are difficult to access, especially on the various cliffs of the Principality, these censuses can be carried out using a drone.

Nivéole also has a very strong heritage value in Monaco. Recent results have shown that the Monegasque populations form a Unique Evolutive Unity (ESU). Their preservation is therefore a priority for the conservation and evolution of this rare and localised species. Some existing populations will also be strengthened and two populations will be reintroduced to sites where they have disappeared.

Any readers seeing the Nivéole in Monaco should send observations (location, date, and photos) to the Department of the Environment: environnement@gouv.mc
