Bakeries join new anti-domestic violence campaign

Bread bags in Monaco will now hold something more precious than the day’s baguettes, they will also include important information for victims of domestic violence while helping to initiate conversations around the issue.

In an innovative new campaign, Monaco’s Committee for the Promotion and Protection of Women’s Rights has teamed up with bakeries in the Principality to distribute bread bags which contain the help and emergency numbers available to victims of violence in the state.
The aim is to also inform and educate the general public about domestic violence by using an object that forms part of everyday life.
“It is a way of reaching people more directly who might be faced with these situations and to remind them that there are State services and associations available to them who will listen,” says Céline Cottalorda, Interministerial Delegate for Women’s Rights. “In this operation, there is also a logic of prevention. Maybe the presence of this bread bag in homes will spark exchanges and conversations on the subject without the family being directly concerned.”
In total, 150,000 bread bags will be distributed by the Costa, Epi d’Or and Mullot bakeries, including on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women which takes place every year on 25th November.

Nice airport celebrates first flight using sustainable fuel

Nice airport is playing its part in the decarbonisation of air travel, on Friday staging the first Nice to Paris flight fuelled with 30% sustainable aviation fuel sourced from used cooking oil.
The Air France flight left Nice’s Terminal 2 bound for Orly after being refilled with the sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) produced by TotalEnergies in their French plants.
“The development of biofuels is a major pathway for TotalEnergies to follow in working towards the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and meeting the challenge of transport decarbonisation,” said Alexis Vovk, President TotalEnergies Marketing and Services. “We are continuing to adapt our industrial facilities and service offering to optimise our response to the growing demand from both public and private sectors, illustrated this week by the signing of a declaration of cooperation in green growth between TotalEnergies and the Métropole Nice Côte d’Azur.”
The biofuel used for this flight is produced by TotalEnergies from used cooking oils and carries ISCC-EU certification (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification). Going forward, the 30% incorporation on the Nice-Paris flight will prevent the emission of three tons of CO2.
Another Air France long-haul flight was made in May using the same fuel and its success spurred the Nice-Paris flight.
“I am delighted that Nice is seeing the first Nice-Paris flight fuelled with 30% SAF, symbolising the policy of transition towards decarbonised forms of transport,” said Mayor of Nice Christian Estrosi. “This technological innovation, which illustrates the ecology of the future that I so fervently hope to see, is a crucial advance in a sector which urgently needs to reduce its emissions of greenhouse gases.”
The flight took place during the Nice Transition Days, an event  celebrating ecological innovations hosted and organised by the Métropole Nice-Côte d’Azur in partnership with the La Tribune newspaper and the Transition Forum. It also marked the final day of the Transition Forum, an international economic conference whose purpose is to accelerate the transition to a lower-carbon future.
Friday’s voyage was symbolic in that it was yet another brick in the wall toward decarbonising air travel out of Nice, France’s second largest airport, prioritising the environment whilst continuing to build the economy in a sustainable way.
Franck Goldnadel, Chairman of the Management Board, Aéroports de la Côte d’Azur reminded those present of the ongoing efforts made by the airports of the region to become more sustainable, saying, “For 20 years, Aéroports de la Côte d’Azur has been fighting on all fronts to bring its direct emissions down, and as a result of these efforts the reduction in absolute terms of its emissions recently earned it Airport Carbon Accreditation level 4+, which is the highest level awarded and which it is the first French airport company to achieve. Operating a SAF-fuelled flight seven years after an initial test flight chimes with and strengthens our resolve to be an active player in the decarbonisation of air travel and a test lab for the airport of the future.”

“Simpler” rules for travel to UK from Monday

The UK government has introduced new international travel rules aimed at streamlining what has been an incredibly confusing system, giving travellers living in Monaco and France an easier way to visit friends and loved ones as the half term break approaches.
Mandatory day eight tests, a convoluted “traffic light” system and pre-flight Covid testing are now a thing of the past as the UK introduces a new system for travelling into the country from Monday 4th October.
Grant Shapps, the British Transport Secretary, has revealed the “simpler, more straightforward system” that will allow “more people to travel, see loved ones or conduct business around the world while providing a boost for the travel industry”.
The alterations to the system have come in light of the 82% full vaccination rate for UK residents aged 16 and older. It also may have something to do with the fact people have avoided coming to the UK due to the complicated system. Heathrow, once Europe’s busiest airport, has dropped to 10th busiest after rivals Paris, Frankfurt and Amsterdam since the pandemic.
The traffic light system, which has been criticised for being unfair and confusing for travellers, is being abandoned, much to the relief of passengers afraid of being caught out in a country that suddenly changes from medium risk amber to high-risk red, forcing isolation periods and costly hotel stays.
Starting Monday, the system will be two-tiered – one with countries that pose significant risk classified as red, and the rest as ROW (rest of world) nations. Eight countries will be taken off the current red list including Turkey, Pakistan, the Maldives, Egypt, Sri Lanka, Oman, Bangladesh and Kenya.
Testing requirements will also be improved for fully vaccinated passengers coming from open countries. No longer will a pre-flight test be required, and though there is still the requirement to take a test on day two after arrival, the cost will be significantly less from the end of October when lateral flow tests will be accepted in lieu of the pricier PCR version.
Those who are unvaccinated will have to self-isolate for 10 days no matter which tiered country they arrive from, and will also be required to test before and after arriving.
As of now, the changes only apply to England, while Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales will announce their own policies as they are made.
France has also recently updated its restricted country lists, saying on Friday that Argentina, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Mozambique, Namibia, Nepal, Guyana and Democratic Republic of Congo are no longer classified as red.

Tchouaméni nets against former side in comfortable victory

An eye-catching Aurélien Tchouaméni display helped a dominant AS Monaco to a comfortable victory against Girondins de Bordeaux at a rain-drenched Stade Louis II. Tchouaméni, facing his former side, scored the first of three goals for Nico Kovac’s side, as ASM also registered their first clean sheet of the Ligue 1 season.
Despite a youthful Monaco side earning a well-earned draw against Real Sociedad mid-week, Kovac unsurprisingly recalled many of his more senior stars on Sunday as ASM looked to go into the upcoming international break on a high.
Amongst those recalled was Maripan, who was forced into action early on as he positioned himself perfectly to make a vital goal-line clearance from Pembele, with Nübel well beaten.
Minutes later, it was Monaco who threatened but once again to no avail. Tchouaméni lofted a tantalising ball from half-way inside the Bordeaux half, which found Volland who duly converted. The linesman however adjudged the recalled German striker to be marginally offside, and the goal was chalked off.
Volland’s disallowed goal was a warning that Bordeaux did not heed, as moments later Tchouaméni opened the scoring against his former employers, sweeping in a Golovin free-kick.
For all of ASM’s possession in the first-half, they rarely threatened the Bordeaux goal. However, with the rain dissipating as the sides came out for the second-half, Monaco didn’t take long to convert their dominance into clear-cut chances.
Just two minutes after the break, Golovin marked his 100th appearance for Monaco with a goal to remember. Tchouaméni was once again influential, beating the press with a powerful run and laying it off to Ben Yedder who, in turn, played in Golovin to dink past the helpless Costil in goal.
Tchouaméni once again went close with a sumptuous strike that rattled the bar before Volland had another goal disallowed for offside.
Ben Yedder rounded off the scoring in the 64th minute, converting a penalty after Diop was felled in the box by Mexer’s outstretched leg.
Having secured the three points midway through the second-half, Monaco also managed to register their first clean sheet of the season, having failed in their previous eight attempts.
Post-match, Kovac was delighted with how his side imposed themselves and called for more of the same after the international break. “We had control over this match from the beginning until the end, so again, I hope we can once more show this level after the international break,” he said.
Kovac was also generous in his praise for Tchouaméni stating that, “He is becoming a real leader in this team, as he showed today in the midfield.”
AS Monaco next travel to Lyon after the international break in what promises to be a fascinating, closely-contested encounter.

Roca team on a roll

AS Monaco basketball was on the road in Roanne for the first of three away matches, where they came away smelling like roses after an 80 to 75 victory.

The Roca team took on Chorale Roanne Saturday night on their opponent’s home turf in their first Betclic Elite match of the season. The men of Monaco walked away with a 80 to 75 win, making the most of their new roster of players and showing fans they are as strong a team as ever.

Danilo Andjusic opened scoring with a three-pointer, starting a game of cat and mouse where the two teams battled for dominance. It wasn’t until near the end of the quarter that Monaco took a decisive lead, with the last play being a Rob Gray lay-up that left the score at 25 to 17.

The second quarter didn’t start out as auspiciously, as Team Captain Léo Westermann was penalised with an unsportsmanlike foul. Though this didn’t deter Monaco, it certainly rattled them a bit and the lead fell to only four points.

The pace picked up considerably afterward, and Westermann recovered his poise. The team saw beautiful shots made by Brock Motum followed by Rudy Demahis on a pass from Donta Hall and back-to-back scoring by Rob Gray. This put the Roca team up 39 to 21, not letting their opponents score a single point until the spell was broken by Roanne’s Jackson Rowe.

Monaco suffered two more fouls, one a technical by Demahis and another unsportsmanlike one by Westermann, which got him expelled from the game. The end of the half saw the score sit at 46 to 40.

After returning from the locker room, Roanne lit up the court nearly catching up to Monaco, putting on the pressure. By the end of the third, the score was nearly neck and neck at 60 to 59.

This is when Monaco poured it on. The last quarter saw some exciting basketball and with just 30 seconds left on the clock, the score was 77 to 75. Paris Lee gave Monaco another point on a free throw, then Yakuba Outtara made the final score of the match, nailing a three-pointer and ending the game with a score of 80 to 75.

Monaco made 27 out of 65 attempts going five for 21 in three-point range. They collected 46 rebounds, with Boutsiele boasting 11 on his own. They stole the ball nine times, had 16 assists and captured 17 stray balls.

High scorer from the Roca’s was Rob Gray with 21 points, followed by Andjusic with 11 and Paris Lee with nine.

Catch more AS Monaco action on Tuesday for another Betclic Elite match versus the Metropolitans at 8:30pm at the Marcel Cerdan Sports Palace.
