COP28 deal marks “beginning of the end” of fossil fuel age

cop28

Those pushing for a “phasing out” of fossil fuels will have to settle for the “transitioning away” of the final COP28 deal, which was agreed by desperate diplomacy in the hours after the climate summit had officially ended.

The COP28 deal was delivered on the morning of Wednesday 13th December, a day after the landmark climate summit in Dubai had come to an official close.

Behind the scenes, work had continued into the early hours and COP28 President Sultan Al Jaber reportedly held a series of intense one-on-one meetings with Heads of State as well as larger group sessions as he pressed for agreement on a revised text from the nearly 200 nations that had attended the summit.

On Monday 11th December, an initial draft that pledged “reducing both consumption and production of fossil fuels, in a just, orderly and equitable manner, so as to achieve net zero by, before or around 2050, in keeping with the science” had been met with outroar.

The principal objections were the lack of commitment in wording and the clear loopholes, with some going as far as to call it “grossly insufficient” and “incoherent”.

The second draft, which was finally agreed two days later, has, however, been hailed as a “landmark” deal. That isn’t to say that there isn’t criticism – some voices from developing nations and island states have dubbed the new text as “unfair and “inequitable” – but the coverage of its contents has been largely positive.

“Transitioning away” from fossil fuels

More than 130 countries reportedly petitioned for an explicit promise to “phase out” fossil fuels, but they were unsuccessful. Instead, the final outcome calls on all parties to assume responsibility for “transitioning away from fossil fuels in energy systems, in a just, orderly and equitable manner, accelerating action in this critical decade, so as to achieve net zero by 2050 in keeping with the science”.

Other key elements include recognising climate change as a “common concern of humankind”, the pledge to triple “renewable energy capacity globally and [double] the global average annual rate of energy efficiency improvements by 2030”, and to accelerate “efforts towards the phase-down of unabated coal power”.

The text also acknowledged that a 43% cut in emissions relative to 2019 levels would be required by 2030, and of 60% by 2035, if the goal of limited global heating to +1.5°C is to be achieved.

Comments from COP28 leaders

“We have delivered a robust action plan to keep 1.5°C in reach,” said Al Jaber in his final speech. “It is an enhanced, balanced, but make no mistake, a historic package to accelerate climate action… We have language on fossil fuel in our final agreement for the first time ever.”

“Whilst we didn’t turn the page on the fossil fuel era in Dubai, this outcome is the beginning of the end,” said UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell during his closing remarks. “Now all governments and businesses need to turn these pledges into real-economy outcomes, without delay.”

Sharing his thoughts on the deal on social media, UN Secretary General António Guterres wrote,” “Whether you like it or not, fossil fuel phase-out is inevitable. Let’s hope it doesn’t come too late.”

COP29 in 2024

In the closing stages of COP28, it was announced that the 2024 UN Climate Change Conference or COP 29 will convene in Azerbaijan, another major oil-producing nation, in November 2024.

Rules had stated that it was the turn of an eastern European nation to host, but all EU bids were vetoed by Russia and only Armenia and Azerbaijan were left in the running. Ultimately, Armenia agreed to support the Azerbaijan bid.

E1’s European summer of racing to heat up in Puerto Banús

The UIM E1 World Championship is adding another key date to fans’ calendars with the announcement that the E1 Puerto Banús GP will be held on 1st and 2nd June 2024.

E1, the world’s first and only all-electric race boat championship, will bring thrilling close-to-shore racing to Puerto Banús, an exclusive enclave in the city of Marbella which is one of the most recognised luxury nautical and tourism destinations in the world.

But along with a commitment to leisure, sports and culture, Puerto Banús also aligns with E1’s mission to drive change and make a positive impact on marine mobility. The marina is changing habits and incorporating new measures that allow both visitors and employees alike to preserve both the marine facilities and the environment.

These actions aim to comply with the 17 objectives established by the United Nations in its 2030 Agenda, increasing efforts to protect oceans, biodiversity, responsible consumption and pollution reduction.

“While it’s always a moment of pride for the series to announce a new race, it’s even more immensely satisfying to partner with a location who’s commitment to sustainable marine practices so closely mirrors our own,” said Rodi Basso, CEO and co-founder of E1. “I can’t wait to bring E1 to Puerto Banús and for fans in this iconic lifestyle location to witness our RaceBirds in action.”

With over five million visitors to the marina each year, a huge crowd can be expected to line the shore as up to 10 teams consisting of male and female pilots compete, each battling it out to secure the coveted E1 title of Champions Of The Water. The league has already announced world-famous team owners including Spanish sporting legend Rafael Nadal, Tom Brady, Steve Aoki, Didier Drogba, Virat Kohli and Sergio Perez, with more to come.

Season 1 of the E1 World Championship will start on 2nd and 3rd February in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, with Monaco among a full calendar of iconic global locations to be announced shortly.

Onsite in Puerto Banús fans can enjoy the Acceleration Festival, E1’s dedicated on-site fan activation village with a wide variety of entertainment options and experiences. Ticketing details will be released shortly.

Nice Airport launches winter sun flight to Cyprus’ Larnaca

For travellers seeking an enchanting blend of history, culture and natural beauty, the new direct flight from Nice Côte d’Azur Airport to Larnaca opens the door to a captivating Mediterranean adventure linking the charm of the French Riviera with that of Cyprus.

Larnaca, with its roots dating back three thousand years to the city-kingdom of Kition, stands as a living proof to the historical interchange between the East and West. Today, it has evolved into a dynamic city, welcoming visitors through its international airport and serving as the main gateway to the Republic of Cyprus.

TWO NON-STOP FLIGHTS PER WEEK

For those eager to embark on a journey to a country full of ancient wonders and untamed landscapes, as well as modern vibrancy and charming villages, Cyprus Airways stands as the sole airline offering a direct Nice-Larnaca flight.

Until 28th March, the airline will be operating two non-stop flight routes per week, on a Tuesday and on a Thursday, from Terminal 1. The flight takes around three hours and forty minutes.

Upon arrival at Larnaca International Airport, passengers find themselves in the only terminal. To reach the city centre, there are three options: taking a convenient and affordable city bus, opting for a readily available taxi for the 15-minute journey or choosing a hired car from the conveniently located desks for extensive island exploration.

Discovering Larnaca: a city of authenticity and warmth

Larnaca, though home to Cyprus’ largest airport, retains all its authenticity and warmth of yesteryear. It is also the ideal base from which to head out and explore.

Whether you’re drawn to the historical wonders, the sea and sunshine, unspoilt nature or chilled urban living, Cyprus is calling!

Prince Albert II congratulates students of Outward Bound Monaco’s UK programme

Nearly two dozen students who bravely took on the challenges of Outward Bound Monaco’s overseas programmes in England and Wales this summer have been awarded their official diplomas by Prince Albert II.

Outward Bound’s history stretches back to 1941, when the concept was created as way to “save young lives directly threatened in World War II” during the bombing raids of UK cities.

Today, this international network of outdoor educational organisations has shifted its focus to changing and improving the lives of young people around the world, including here in the Principality, and the confidence building courses built by Outward Bound instil independence, critical-thinking and compassion that last a lifetime and make for community leaders of tomorrow.

MONACO SALUTES ITS PARTICIPANTS

Over the summer, 23 Monegasque students aged 10 to 17 took part in Outward Bound programmes located in England and Wales. There they tested their personal limits and set about overcoming challenges as individuals and as teams, but also had a great deal of fun along the way.

On 7th December, these intrepid young people were invited to the Yacht Club de Monaco for an awards ceremony that celebrated their achievements. They were joined by Lord Sebastian Coe, a former Olympian and the President of the International Association of Athletics Federations, along with friends, family and members of Outward Bound.

Prince Albert was there too in his capacity as the patron of the local programme, and he offered his heartfelt congratulations to each of the participants, acknowledging their courage and resourcefulness.

It was then the turn of Sarah O’Connor, the President of Outward Bound Monaco, to make an inspirational speech.

“The aim of Outward Bound is to help young people believe they can achieve more than they thought possible,” she said. “We are not talking about aspirations, but about belief in what you can do based on physical experience.”

Continuing with a nod to the participants, she said, “Outward Bound takes young people out of their comfort zones and on adventures in wild places. It presents young people with challenges which help them to know themselves.”

Moving to thank all those involved, she concluded, “This evening has been a celebration of Outward Bound and the positive impact its courses can have on the lives of young people. I would like to thank all our supporters and helpers who have made this possible, and also our Patron H.S.H. Prince Albert of Monaco for once again taking the time to meet the students and present their certificates and also Lord Sebastian Coe for joining us and supporting Outward Bound.”

Renewed Paris-Berlin night train hailed as “greener” alternative to air travel

As the first Berlin to Paris overnight train in nearly a decade pulled into the Gare de l’Est this week, many hailed the occasion as a landmark in the journey towards cleaner travel alternatives, but can long-distance trains really replace airplanes?

With the advent of cheap airfares, train travel in Europe dropped significantly. Countless services, including many long-haul and overnight journeys that had synced up cities across the continent for generations, were gradually eliminated until long-distance train travel was more novelty than genuine alternative.

But now, as the world is looking to cut carbon emissions and find greener ways to travel, trains have re-emerged as not just viable, but preferred methods of transport.

This was evident on the morning of Tuesday 12th December as the first Berlin to Paris overnight train entered the French capital’s Gare de l’Est station in nearly 10 years, marking a new age of an “old” approach.

THE NIGHTJET

Called the Nightjet service, the train connects Berlin, Brussels and Paris, and is part of a network of trans-European sleeper routes that are being resurrected under the impetus of the EU Green Deal.

The Paris-Berlin Nightjet – the information for which can be found here – will run three times a week thanks to a collaboration between Germany’s Deutsche Bahn, Austria’s ÖBB, Belgium’s NMBS/SNCB and France’s SNCF.

“It’s possible to fall asleep in Paris and wake up in Berlin,” says France’s Minister for Transport, Clément Beaune, of the new service. “It is the culmination of a commitment that I have carried for three years [and] a high point for Europe and ecology.”

FRANCE’S VISION

The French government has invested €100 million in jumpstarting national rail networks in recent years, and this latest development is all part of President Emmanuel Macron’s pledge to open several new domestic overnight train services by 2030.

The plans have gotten off to a good start, with the first new sleeper between Paris and Aurillac in the Cantal region setting off on 10th December, two decades after it was shut down.

The Paris-Berlin Nightjet line is an international extension of the French plan and joins an already launched Paris-Vienna route, but they are just two of the numerous other long-distance routes across Europe that are available at very fair prices via the Nightjet network.

“This [Paris-Berlin] train is the image of European cooperation that responds to the climate emergency and the need to connect peoples,” says Beaune. “This line completes a range of French night trains in France, with 10 lines gradually reopened. Our ambition is great: in France and in Europe, we will open other lines throughout this decade, we will buy and renovate night trains. The night train is no longer a symbol of the past, it is the image of the future.”

Prices for single tickets between Paris and Berlin start as low as €34.90 for a seat and €79.90 for a sleeping car. For more information, click here.
