F1: Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz wins Australian Grand Prix, Charles Leclerc takes P2

australian grand prix

It was the perfect result for Scuderia Ferrari’s drivers, the Spanish Carlos Sainz and Monaco’s own Charles Leclerc, who soared to a one-two victory at the Australian Grand Prix over the weekend and picked up the maximum 44 points, edging the team closer to rivals Red Bull.

Sainz, who returned to the grid at the Australian Grand Prix mere weeks after his emergency appendicitis surgery, started on the front row in P2, but was able to get ahead by passing Red Bull’s Max Verstappen on Lap 2. Verstappen would soon be forced to retire early from the race due to a mechanical problem.

29-year-old Sainz was understandably grinning from ear to ear as he fielded questions from reporters in the aftermath of his win.

“Life sometimes is crazy, what happened at the beginning of year, then the podium in Bahrain, then the appendix, the comeback, the win… It’s a rollercoaster, but I loved it and I’m extremely happy,” he said. “The team deserves this one-two, we did a fantastic job all weekend, from FP1 to the last lap. We executed a perfect race, nailed the strategy and the mechanics were incredible, delivering precise and quick pitstops every single time. Congratulations to everyone! Let’s carry this momentum to Japan! Vamos!”

His fellow Ferrari driver, the Monaco-born Leclerc, started in P4 instead of his original P5 because of the three-place grid penalty levied on Red Bull’s Sergio Pérez, and the 26-year-old gradually worked his way up thanks to well-timed pitstops.

By Lap 48, with 10 more to go, the final order was set: Sainz and Leclerc followed by McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.

“It was a really good weekend for the team,” said Leclerc post-race. “We maximised our points and left nothing on the table… We’ve started out the season with three weekends in which we have made the most of our potential, which feels really good and is a testimony to all the hard work that our team has put in over the past months.”

Solid results

Sainz was chosen as Driver of the Day by F1’s international community of fans while Leclerc added a bonus point to his 18 for second place by getting the fastest lap on the Albert Park Circuit.

The results put Leclerc within four points of Verstappen, the frontrunner, in the Driver Standings. He holds second place with 47 points. Sainz is now in fourth with a respectable 40 points, behind Pérez.

The Ferrari team has also greatly benefited from the race on 24th March and has advanced in the Constructor Standings, with 93 points to Red Bull’s 97.

Next stop is…

There is less than a fortnight to go until the Japan Grand Prix on 7th April and Sainz will no doubt spend the time further recuperating from his appendicitis surgery, which put him out of the race in Saudi Arabia earlier in March. Leclerc, meanwhile, shared a photo on his social media accounts marked, “Next stop, Bali!”.

Disco fever hits Monaco: Inside the spectacular Bal de la Rose 2024

The glitz and glamour of Monaco’s social scene reached new heights on Saturday as the Princely family gathered for the much-anticipated Bal de la Rose. With disco fever in the air and a surprise return from Princess Charlene after more than a decade, the night promised to be one for the books.

Celebrating its 48th year, the Bal de la Rose stands as a cornerstone of Monaco’s annual social calendar, uniting the Princely family alongside 800 esteemed guests for an evening of revelry and philanthropy in support of the Princess Grace Foundation.

This year, the iconic Salle des Étoiles at Sporting Monte-Carlo was transformed into a disco wonderland, courtesy of designer Christian Louboutin and the creative vision of Princess Caroline of Hanover, Françoise Dumas, and François Mercadet. With the pulsating beats of disco music filling the air, attendees were transported back in time to an era of glittering dance floors and dazzling fashion.

The return of a sparkling Princess Charlene

The highlight of the evening undoubtedly came with the surprise appearance of Princess Charlene, making her first Bal de la Rose appearance in a decade. Radiant and resplendent, she embraced the theme with gusto, donning a spectacular sparkling disco jumpsuit that perfectly complemented her new haircut. Alongside her, Prince Albert exuded charm in a classic black tuxedo, accented by a playful bright red bow-tie.

Founded in 1954 by Princess Grace and now chaired by her daughter, Princess Caroline of Hanover, the Bal de la Rose is not only a celebration of Monaco’s opulence but also a beacon of hope for humanitarian causes. Throughout the night, an exceptional raffle raised funds to support pediatric research and other vital initiatives for children in need.

Among the distinguished guests were members of the Princely family including Charlotte Casiraghi, Pierre Casiraghi and his wife Beatrice Borromeo, as well as Princess Alexandra of Hanover and her partner Ben Strautmann, all adding to the evening’s allure and prestige.

A blast from the past

After dance entertainment by MC Performers, the night reached its crescendo with the performance of American singer Gloria Gaynor, who captivated the audience with her timeless disco anthems, including ‘I Will Survive’ and ‘Never Can Say Goodbye’, among others.

As guests savoured a sumptuous 1980s-inspired menu featuring smoked salmon and caviar, truffle stuffed chicken, and grand cru chocolate, accompanied by Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque Champagne, the Bal de la Rose 2024 proved to be another unforgettable celebration of Monaco’s rich heritage and commitment to philanthropy.

Monaco’s broadcasting evolution and the role of Télé Monte-Carlo explored in new exhibition

Drawing on resources stored in the Palace archives and at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, the Institut Audiovisuel de Monaco has created a fascinating new exhibition that explores the rich history of broadcasting in the Principality and retells the story of Télé Monte-Carlo for a new audience.

Télé Monte-Carlo (TMC), which was founded by Prince Rainier III in 1954, was a key part of the evolution of broadcasting in – and media coverage of – Monaco for two decades.

Although it was taken off air in 1974, the platform had a profound impact on how Monaco was perceived in the French-speaking world, and the new exhibition from the Institut Audiovisuel de Monaco explores this influence as well as the innovations that TMC introduced.

TMC’s creative evolution

The exhibition draws on records kept by the Palace archives and the Bibliothèque Nationale de France to highlight TMC’s technological and creative milestones.

It reveals how TMC carved its niche despite competition, thanks in large part to the vision of Jacques Antoine, a television producer who led TMC’s programming during its height. Known for his strategic focus on engaging and varied content, Antoine’s approach balanced entertainment with relaxation and helped to grow the channel’s popularity and influence.

Visitors to the exhibition will also discover TMC’s innovative strategies, such as outdoor broadcasting, community engagement, the integration of cinema into television and the production of diverse content, from talk shows to game shows.

The exhibition, which formally opens to the public on 25th March, will run until 31st January 2025. To visit, head to 83/85 Boulevard du Jardin Exotique between 10am and 5pm during the week. An English-language guide to the exhibition will be available at the front desk.

ClicBus: Monaco launches on demand bus service for areas not served by regular routes

clicbus

A new on demand mini-bus service in Monaco is set to vastly improve public transportation in underserviced parts of the Principality. Here’s how the ClicBus app and network will work.

Monaco might be small in size, but for many people living here, public transport can be a lifeline and makes getting around the hilly Principality considerably easier than travelling on foot.

In the Plati, Fleurs and Annonciade areas, however, public transport is virtually non-existent. To rectify this problem, Monaco has developed a new system, ClicBus, which will allow users to summon a bus to a stop closest to them and travel to one to four central locations: Place d’Armes, the Fontvieille Shopping Centre, the Monte-Carlo Tourism Office and Place des Moulins.

FOR INDIVIDUALS AND GROUPS

Electric mini-buses with eight to 20 passenger seats will form the fleet.

Passengers can order a bus via the ClicBus app or by calling a designated phone number advertised at various bus stops served by the service. A bus will then come and collect the individual or group and take them on to their stop of choice from the pre-assigned list.

The service, which will be up and running from 25th March, will be available from 7am to 9.20pm seven days a week. A special night service from all bus stops in the Principality will extend these hours until 1.30am during the week and until 2.30am on weekends. The government has confirmed that these hours may be lengthened during summer months subject to need.

The service, which is being operated by Compagnie des Autobus de Monaco, was created at the instigation of the Prince’s Government and will cost the same all local bus lines.

From 23rd March, it will also replace the CAM 7 line.

Tickets can be purchased on the bus or with the use of a standard CAM network subscription.
