Bonhams to auction iconic panther sculpture by Rembrandt Bugatti

Trois panthères marchant

An exceptional bronze sculpture by Rembrandt Bugatti will go under the hammer for the first time by Bonhams. Trois panthères marchant, circa 1905, is estimated to fetch between €3.5 and €5.5 million.

Bonhams Cornette de Saint Cyr will offer the bronze by Rembrandt Bugatti in the Impressionist and Modern Art sale on Wednesday 5th June.

The work, Trois panthères marchant, is a unique piece that was cast in bronze by Adrien-Aurélien Hébrard and shows three walking panthers together. Although the work has been exhibited in all of the artist’s major exhibitions, it has never been seen on the market before.

“This unique piece is the most iconic sculpture by the artist, who had a brief but highly productive career,” says Bénédicte van Campen, Bonhams’ Senior International Specialist. “Imposing in size and with a beautiful patina, this is the only cast which presents the three panthers together. Understandably, this masterpiece is the cover of the catalogue raisonné of the artist’s work by Véronique Fromanger.”

Rembrandt’s unique approach to sculpture

Born in 1884, the Italian sculptor Rembrandt Bugatti chose to focus on sculpting animals. Using exotic models found in the zoos of Paris and Antwerp, his work featured animals such as ant-eaters, tapirs, Marabou storks, yaks, secretary birds, elephants, lions and kangaroos, introducing them into the history of European art as sculpted subjects for the first time.

After a period of intense observation, Bugatti would create models for nearly all his sculptures directly in front of the animal itself. The artist’s extraordinary intuition for the right moment made it possible for him to capture each animal’s most expressive gesture, thus creating incomparably lifelike portraits.

Panthers were “his companions in life and work”. After having met with the zookeepers of Jardin des Plantes in Paris, Bugatti felt closer to these animals which he thought were less aggressive and behaved more naturally than humans. He took the time to observe them every day and worked in situ in front of them.

As Véronique Fromanger writes in her catalogue raisonné, Rembrandt Bugatti sculpteur, répertoire monographique: “Bugatti captures a single moment in time by analysing and synthesising, experiencing a permanent face à face with his model, during which he observes the animal with all of his intellectual and sensual capabilities, absorbing senses, sounds and smells. This enables him to fix the model in his mind, imprinting it on his visual, sensory and haptic memory, before modelling in multi-dimensional form.”

Bugatti did not use preparatory sketches or photographs, and avoided reworking the sculptures at the studio or during casting.

France to champion domestic solar industry and embrace agrivoltaics

France’s photovoltaic industry is on the verge of a major boom following the announcement of a new master plan to boost domestic solar energy production.

In early April, France’s Minister of Economy, Finance, and Industrial and Digital Sovereignty, Bruno Le Maire, and the Minister Delegate in charge of Industry and Energy, Roland Lescure (pictured above), unveiled their plans to increase solar panel installations and capitalise on the possibilities of agrivoltaics in shoring up both food and energy security.

Solar power, they say, is one of the leading ways in which France will be able to produce carbon-free energy and achieve green industrial sovereignty.

As of the end of 2023, mainland France generated just over 19 gigawatts of energy using solar technology, while increased public funding for the sector has allowed the nation to expand its photovoltaic capacities by an additional 1.3 gigawatts since the start of 2024.

The goal of the new plan is to go a step further and up the ante by channeling millions of euros of investment into this clean and green energy source.

By the end of the year, France should be producing an extra six gigawatts of solar-sourced power thanks to numerous new installations across the country.

The State is also embracing the concept of agrivoltaics: the dual use of land for solar energy production and agriculture.

Described by the ministers are both “responsible and virtuous”, this part of the plan will seek to better understand and manage sites where solar panels can be installed, such as on farmland and in forested areas.

“In a world where electricity has become the major economic issue, we need photovoltaics,” said Le Maire from a new solar development site in Manosque in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department.

Echoing the convictions of his colleague, Lescure added, “We are announcing a solar pact between the State and industrial players to support a French photovoltaic industry. The state will be exemplary in public procurement. I call on all buyers to order French and commit to the pact!”

Is Russia to blame for the spate of GPS problems plaguing flights across Europe?

Thousands of flights from all over Europe have reported GPS issues since last August, and now, officials are looking at Russia as the possible culprit of this disturbing trend.

More than 46,000 flights have reported problems with GPS systems since last summer, with the vast majority stemming from Eastern Europe’s Baltic region, bordering with Russia.

This has led to speculation that the Russians are behind these signal jams.

LOGGED OVER BALTIC

Ryanair flights have recorded over 2,300 incidents of GPS interference since last August, according to a report based on flight logs from the website gpsjam.org https://gpsjam.org/ , with an additional 1,400 coming from Wizz Air, 82 from British Airways and four from easyJet. Every one of them was logged as the planes flew over the Baltic Sea, near borders with Russia.

Specific incidents include a report from 23rd March, as reported by Géo Magazine, where “targeted operations” were made over Poland and southern Sweden. Then there was the case in March where an RAF plane carrying British Defence Secretary Grant Shapps saw GPS systems disrupted for half an hour as he flew near Kalingrad.

This phenomenon was looked at back in January when a conference was held by the International Air Transport Association and the EU Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) on “spoofing”, or sending false signals, and jamming. EASA noted large increases in both and warned that putting a halt to these attacks should be a priority given safety factors.

THE SCEPTICS

Some are more sceptical that this is a real threat. According to an article from UK publication The Guardian, the head of flight operations at the CAA, Glenn Bradley, said, “Aviation is one of the safest forms of air travel and there are several safety protocols in place to protect navigation systems on commercial aircraft.

“GPS jamming does not directly impact the navigation of an aircraft, and while it is a known issue, this does not mean an aircraft has been jammed deliberately.”

The airlines are also downplaying the events, making them seem more of a nuisance than anything more sinister.

“In recent years there has been a rise in intermittent GPS interference which has affected all airlines,” said a Ryanair representative. “Ryanair aircraft have multiple systems to identify aircraft location, including GPS. If any of the tracking systems, such as GPS, does not work, then the crew, as part of standard operating procedures, switch to one of the alternate systems.”

A spokesperson from eastJet also weighed in, saying there were “multiple navigation systems onboard commercial aircraft as well as procedures in place which mitigate against issues with GPS that can occur for various reasons.”

Monaco move second after 2-0 win over Brest

AS Monaco won 2-0 at Brest on Sunday to overtake their opponents in the Ligue 1 standings and move into second place, extending their unbeaten run to seven games despite finishing the match with nine men.

Monaco have 55 points, two ahead of Brest and with a game in hand, while Lille, who have also played a game less, are one point behind Brest in fourth after their 1-0 win over Strasbourg.

Monaco broke the deadlock in the 40th minute, when a poor clearance from Jonas Martin fell to Denis Zakaria, who took a touch to take him past the onrushing Martin and from the edge of the area curled his shot into the far top corner.

The visitors doubled their lead three minutes after the break, with Krepin Diatta’s cross from the left bundled home at the near post by Takumi Minamino.

Monaco had both Eliesse Ben Seghir and Wilfried Singo sent off in added time but it was too late for Brest to take advantage and they fell to their second consecutive defeat.

Lille overcame Strasbourg thanks to Jonathan David’s 12th minute goal, his sixth in six league games, and they have a five point advantage over fifth-placed Nice. Paris St Germain, who play Lyon later on Sunday, are top on 63 points.
