‘Larry Bell: Works from the 1970s’ on show in Monaco

The striking and rare works of Larry Bell, a pioneering figure in the Light and Space movement, are currently on display at Hauser & Wirth Monaco, offering a rare glimpse into the artist’s revolutionary approach to glass and metal. Known for his innovative techniques, Bell has been a central figure in the art world since the 1960s, when he began experimenting with the interplay of light, space, and reflective surfaces.

Larry Bell’s unique process involves using a vacuum chamber that he created in his studio in Taos, New Mexico, a method influenced by NASA technology. In this chamber, he removes air to apply atomised metal to glass, creating a surface that interacts dynamically with its surroundings. This technique, which he has refined over decades, allows him to explore the properties of glass as both a transparent and reflective material.

The current exhibition at Hauser & Wirth, curated by Tanya Barson, features four exceptionally rare works: three two-panel pieces and one five-panel work. These pieces have been sourced from private collections in Rome and the prestigious Panza Collection in Italy. Typically, Bell’s early works are housed in museum collections, making this exhibition a significant opportunity for the public to experience these masterpieces.

Light and Space movement

Bell, originally based in California, was a prominent member of the Light and Space movement, often described as the West Coast’s answer to minimalism. This movement emphasised light, space, and the perception of these elements. As Tanya Barson explained to Monaco Life’s Cassandra Tanti, Bell’s work challenges viewers’ perceptions of volume and space through the use of delicate glass panels and reflective surfaces.

His early sculptures, which date back to the 1960s, often revolved around the cube form. Over time, Bell’s exploration led him to more complex geometries, including broken cubes and zigzag forms. His works, though simple in shape, offer intricate reflections and interruptions, creating a larger-than-life experience as one moves around them.

Transporting and installing these fragile glass sculptures is a nerve-wracking process, given their delicate nature. The pieces are displayed on pale-coloured carpet, acting as a subtle plinth and enhancing the viewing experience by preventing distractions from the intricate reflections and refractions of the sculptures.

His approach merges artistic creativity with scientific precision, continually pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved with glass.

The exhibition at Hauser & Wirth includes a video of Bell discussing his process and the scientific principles behind his work. This insight into his meticulous and innovative methods helps viewers appreciate the depth and complexity of his art.

In addition to the glass sculptures, the exhibition features a piece titled ‘Moving Ways’, a pigment on paper work from the early 1970s. This work, velcroed to the wall for a seamless presentation, plays with optical illusions similar to op art, blending shades to create a metallic appearance and movement.

A must-see exhibition in Monaco

The exhibition in Monaco provides a unique opportunity to experience Bell’s work in a new light, quite literally. The natural light of the exhibition space, combined with the coastal environment of Monaco, mirrors the conditions in California where Bell’s journey began. This synergy between the art and its environment enhances the viewer’s experience, making this exhibition a must-see for art enthusiasts and newcomers alike.

Bell’s recent practice, including works from 2021, showcases his mastery of colour. These pieces, created by laminating coloured glass, reveal his skills as a colourist. One of these monumental pieces, titled ‘The Blue Gate’, will go on show in the Boulingrins Gardens in July.

Roca Team blow Paris Basketball away in Game 3 of Betclic Elite finals

AS Monaco Basket’s massive 88-59 victory over Paris Basketball on Sunday night puts the Roca Team one game up in the Betclic Elite finals series. The Monaco side could now be just 40 minutes away from becoming the 2024 Champions of France.

The Roca Team were back in action on Sunday 9th June at Paris’ new and wildly impressive Adidas Arena for the third game of the Betclic Elite finals, and, after a crushing defeat on home turf only a few days earlier, the players proved themselves ready to turn the tables on their worthy opponents.

In front of a crowd of 8,000 fans, AS Monaco’s determination to take the advantage was evident from the start.

In this pivotal match, the Roca Team came out swinging, scoring double the points of their opponents in the first quarter. From there, they never took their feet off the pedal, outscoring Paris in every quarter of the game to follow. Ultimately, AS Monaco Basket came away with an incredible 88-59 win.

Coach Sasa Obradovic was all praise after the match, saying, “The guys got into EuroLeague mode… We played fantastic. It was a collective effort and it’s really nice to see.”

Top scorer Élie Okobo added, “We had a lot of defensive intensity, which meant that we scored easy baskets in attack. It gave everyone confidence and that’s really a very good thing… We all realised the failure of Game 2. We arrived in Paris determined. Everyone was concerned about their role. We played harder, longer and with regularity. We showed our true colours.”

Other than Okobo, who scored 20 points on the night, Mike James also gave an impressive showing, adding 14 points to the total, followed by Jordan Loyd and Alpha Diallo, who tied for next highest with 12 points apiece.

The next game will be played in Paris on Wednesday 12th June. Go Roca Team!

The Olympic flame is coming to Monaco

For the second time ever in history, the eternal Olympic flame will be coming to the Principality of Monaco later this month as the torch makes its journey through the Riviera and on to Paris.

It has been confirmed that Monaco will be welcoming the Olympic flame on Tuesday 18th June as part of its route through the Alpes-Maritimes.

The visit will go down in history as the torch’s second-ever visit to the Principality, following its first official appearance here back in 1968, ahead of the Grenoble Winter Olympics.

The flame will begin its brief Monaco stop-off in Port Hercule at 2.15pm. Six torchbearers will then take their turn in carrying the eternal flame up to the Palais Princier de Monaco for a scheduled 2.45pm finish.

Prior to Monaco, the flame will be making a stop in the mountain village resort of Valberg. The next destination after the Principality will be Antibes-Juan-les-Pins.

Monaco’s Prince Albert II is the president of the Monegasque Olympic Committee and has been a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) since 1985.

He has participated in five Winter Olympics as part of Monaco’s bobsleigh team and first carried the Olympic flame in 1996, ahead of the Atlanta Summer Olympics. The Prince has since been a torchbearer nine more times for both Summer and Winter Games.

Prince Albert’s wife, Princess Charlene, is a former Olympian herself. She swam for South Africa at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

The Monegasque Olympic Committee was established in 1907 and sent its first delegation to the Summer Olympics in 1920. The following year, in 1921, Monaco hosted the Women’s Olympiades in a demonstration of the nation’s early support for female athletes.

Since its initial Olympic participation in 1920, Monaco has sent delegations to 21 Summer Olympics and 11 Winter Olympics.
