Paralympic torch coming to Antibes

Ahead of the launch of the Paralympic Games on 28th August, the port town of Antibes has been chosen as a relay point for the flame as it makes its journey across France for Paris.

On Sunday 25th August, the Paralympic torch will begin its tour of Antibes in the old town at 3.30pm. The course will culminate on the Esplanade du Pré des Pêcheurs at 5pm, where the cauldron will be lit.

Antibes, along with nearby commune Juan-les-Pins, was also a stop on the Olympic torch relay route in June, but the visit by the Paralympic flame has resonated strongly with residents and local officials, who have been working hard over the last few years to improve disability access in and around the historic citadel by investing in Antibes’ public facilities and services.

After its stint on the Riviera, the torch will head inland to Lyon on 26th August, before finally ending its journey in Paris the following day.

Boxer Oleksandr Usyk to lead Team U17 at Princess Charlene Foundation’s Water Bike Challenge

Oleksandr Usyk

The fifth and final team set to take part in the Princess Charlene Foundation’s Calvi to Monaco Water Bike Challenge in September has been revealed. Ukrainian heavyweight boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk will head up Team U17 as they compete against a host of other sporting legends, celebrities and local figures from the Principality.

The Princess Charlene Foundation’s 2024 Calvi to Monaco Water Bike Challenge is fast approaching, with competitors due to launch their water bikes into the water in the Corsican port of Calvi on 6th September.

The race, a 180km challenge across the open waters of the Mediterranean Sea, will continue through the night until the teams arrive on Monaco’s Plage Larvotto on 7th September.

The Foundation announced the identities of the members of teams Serenity, Lionheart, Ferrari and Rock to Rock earlier this month – they include the likes of F1’s Valtteri Bottas and professional cyclist Tiffany Cromwell, as well as Monaco’s resident Ferrari dealer Guido Giovanelli and Gareth Wittstock, the Princess Charlene Foundation’s General Secretary and Princess Charlene’s younger brother – and now the final spot on the teams’ roster has been filled.

At the head of Team U17 will be former World Champion boxer Oleksandr Usyk of Ukraine. He will be cycling in relay with Kyiv native and rising boxing star Daniel Lapin, Monaco-based businessman Dmytro Kovalenko and French professional handball player turned personal trainer Nicolas Fache as the team attempts to be the first over the line in Larvotto.

How to donate

The funds raised by Water Bike Challenge will go towards supporting the Princess Charlene Foundation’s various initiatives and programmes. The Foundation is most well-known for its water safety and anti-drowning projects in Europe and the wider world.
