Direct flights from Nice to Malta now available year-round

The direct flight route from Nice Côte d’Azur Airport to Malta International Airport has proved incredibly popular with travellers since it launched earlier this year, so much so that Universal Air has now decided to run the connection three times a week on a year-round basis.

The stunning island of Malta, a nation that has been at the crossroads of Mediterranean civilisations for millennia, has never been more accessible from the Riviera. Since a direct flight between Nice Côte d’Azur Airport and Malta International Airport, which is located around eight kilometres from the capital of Valletta, was launched earlier this year by easyJet and Universal Air, thousands of passengers have made the two-hour journey to explore the rich history and culture of this captivating isle.

Universal Air has now announced that its winter schedule will feature frequent connections between Malta and Nice, three times a week every Sunday, Monday and Thursday for weekend and business travel.

The flights will run year-round, allowing travellers to soak up the beauty of Malta, which has one of the densest concentrations of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the world.

Malta is a nation with layer upon layer of history and heritage. Its wild landscapes are steeped in myths and legends, and its charming towns and cities are home to ancient temples and medieval fortresses. As one visitor put it: “Almost every brick in Malta tells a story.”

Among its top tourist attractions is Valletta itself. The capital is UNESCO-listed and is home to grand Baroque architecture and famous landmarks such as St. John’s Co-Cathedral, the Grandmaster’s Palace, Fort St. Elmo, and the National Museum of Archaeology, which houses a spellbinding collection of artefacts uncovered on the island. Then there’s the ancient fortified city of Mdina, also known as the Silent City, with its honeycomb streets and glorious palaces.

While the beaches of Malta are more of a summertime attraction, the island does enjoy relatively balmy winter temperatures, so they’re worth mentioning. Its two most iconic beaches are Golden Bay and Mellieha Bay, while the Blue Lagoon on the nearby island of Comino is a must-see, and a trip out to Gozo should certainly be on your list. The island’s rugged and rocky coastline, with its pristine waters, has long been popular with divers too.

End-of-year road resurfacing impacting eight Monaco neighbourhoods

Monaco has begun its latest round of street resurfacing, targeting eight key areas with night-only works to minimise traffic disruption.

Monaco takes great care in maintaining its infrastructure, with regular asphalt resurfacing being a key part of this effort. The Department of Urban Planning has launched its latest round of street repairs, focusing on eight areas from now until 15th November.

To decrease impact on traffic, they have made plans to work only at night, and to complete work in a single night where possible. In three cases, this will not be possible, but they have stated they will complete tasks as expediently as possible. Manual controls will allow for access to car parks and shops, including the entry ways to buildings, where necessary.

Avenue Varavilla is the first stop. There will be alternating traffic from 8pm to 6pm on the night of 23rd October into 24th October and will not only re-tarmac the roads but will also tackle a damaged road section at the bridge.

Chemin de la Turbie will also be affected on 23rd into 24th October, closing from 8pm to 6am. No parking will be permitted on the street after 4pm and access to car parks will be blocked.

On the 24th into 25th, work on Boulevard Rainier III will take place, with a closure from 8pm to 6am and again, no parking after 4pm. Agaves car park will be accessible via rue de la Turbie.

Avenue Hector Otto is the next up and is getting a major facelift. From 8pm to 6am on 28th to 31st October, and 4th to 6th November, there will be a “complete rehabilitation of the avenue”. For residents who are not permitted to use their car parks during these periods, temporary free parking cards will be issued for the Salines car park. They can be acquired at the parking lot’s reception office.

From 8pm to 6am on the night of 6th into 7th November, Avenue Pasteur Bas will be closed, though access to all Princess Grace Hospital Centre car parks, both staff and patients, will be maintained. Pedestrians will also still be able to pass, as will those exiting the hospital’s public car park.

At the Palais Honoria at Boulevards du Jardin Exotique and Belgique, roads will be shut down from 9pm to 6am on the 7th to 8th November. Connection between the boulevards is via the upper part of rue Bosio with alternating traffic in both directions.

Avenue de Fontvieille is last, from 12th to 15th November with closures from 8pm to 6am. Work will occur under the new Ilot Pasteur structure and residents of the Fontvieille Shopping Centre villas can take advantage of free parking there. The Wurtemberg car park will also be open.

Pedestrian paths are also being maintained and marked. The impacted intercity bus lines and the Compagnie des Autobus de Monaco will be diverted from 8pm, with prior information to be given to users.

The eighth location – Boulevard du Larvotto – has already been completed. Emergency vehicles and personnel will have total access in emergencies.

Monaco urges vulnerable groups to get vaccinated ahead of flu and Covid season

With summer now over and people turning to indoor pursuits, the chance of catching a virus is once again on the rise. So, the Monaco government has launched a new flu and Covid vaccination campaign aimed at the vulnerable. Here’s where you can go to get your jabs.

The Department of Social Affairs and Health is reminding Monegasques, residents and social security beneficiaries in Monaco about the importance of getting vaccinated against seasonal flu and Covid-19, especially for those at higher risk of severe illness.

This joint vaccination campaign targets people aged 65 and over, those under 65 with certain chronic conditions, pregnant women, people with obesity, and anyone staying in a follow-up care or medico-social facility, regardless of age.

Vaccines adapted to the current strains are already available in Monaco’s pharmacies, with or without a prescription. You can get vaccinated directly at the pharmacy or pick up the vaccine and visit your GP.

Both vaccinations—flu and Covid-19—can be administered at the same time, using different injection sites, or spaced out without needing to wait between doses. It’s important not to delay, as the vaccines take a few days to offer full protection. The aim is for those who most need them to be vaccinated before the epidemic season gets in full swing.

The eighth edition of the E-Rallye Monte-Carlo has begun, with more than 60 teams representing nations and manufacturers from around the world departing from Monaco’s iconic Casino Square on a 250-kilometre journey through the mountains of France and Italy using exclusively electric-powered vehicles.

On Wednesday 23rd October, the fleet of 100% electric vehicles took off from central Monaco and started the challenging route set out for the 2024 E-Rallye Monte-Carlo, which will see competitors tackle the mountainous terrain of the southern Alps that crosses the French-Italian border.

Prince Albert II of Monaco’s nephew and niece, Louis Ducruet and Camille Gottlieb, were present at the launch, with the latter getting behind the wheel of the Team Sirius car. Supported by local philanthropist Philippe Demanet, Gottlieb is using her participation in the rally to raise awareness about the dangers of drink driving through her Be Safe Monaco initiative, which aims to promote road safety in the Principality.

The rally has been structured into four legs over four days. The course covers three French departments—Alpes de Haute-Provence, Alpes-Maritimes, and Var—and a segment of the Italian Riviera. Competitors will navigate 14 specific stages over the 250-kilometre route. This year’s edition integrates historic routes used by the Monte-Carlo Rally and also introduces new sections intended to increase the difficulty of the course.

Reserved exclusively for 100% electric vehicles, the rally attracts manufacturers interested in testing and showcasing their latest technologies under competitive conditions. The final leg of the event will conclude on Saturday 26th October, followed by an awards ceremony in Monaco at 8.30pm.

Charles Leclerc gets his wings in new ‘Supersonique’ documentary

It’s been revealed that Formula One driver Charles Leclerc is starring in a new Canal+ documentary this November, which sees the Monegasque involved in a daring airplane stunt with a fighter jet.

Charles Leclerc has built his career as a high-octane, speed-defying sports star, and now he can add another daring achievement to his list.

At the recent Sport Festival in Trento, Italy, the Team Ferrari driver hinted to his involvement in something aviation-related, but he didn’t give up any details, saying only that, “Two or three weeks ago, I did something a bit crazy with an airplane. It’s not official yet, but it will be in the coming weeks.”

Now, it has been revealed in a trailer shared on social media that Leclerc traded land-based pursuits for the heavens in an exciting new documentary called ‘Supersonique’, featuring the driver and a French fighter jet.

“For the first time in his life, Charles Leclerc will board a Rafale fighter jet to take part in a French Air Force training mission. A unique experience immortalised by the documentary Supersonique,” revealed Canal+ in the teaser.

Charles Leclerc also teased the experience on X, saying, “What an incredible opportunity Canal+ gave me to pilot such a machine. To be able to compare that speed feeling with what I usually experience in a Formula One car was very special. Stay tuned for the full experience next week.”

The film will be broadcast on 3rd November at 5pm on the Canal+ network. See the documentary’s trailer below:

Camille Gottlieb and Black Sirius team shine spotlight on Be Safe at E-Rallye Monte-Carlo

Camille Gottlieb will be leading Team Sirius out of Place du Casino on Wednesday as the 2024 E-Rallye Monte-Carlo kicks into gear. Supported by local philanthropist Philippe Demanet, the daughter of Princess Stephanie is raising awareness for her Be Safe Monaco initiative, which is designed to prevent drink driving in and around the Principality.

Black Sirius is one of 63 teams to participate in the eighth annual E-Rallye Monte-Carlo, which runs from 23rd to 26th October. This team is not just competing, but aiming to raise awareness of Be Safe Monaco, an initiative created by Camille Gottlieb in 2017, which seeks to curb the dangers of drunk driving.

Be Safe Monaco offers free shuttle services to ensure that those who have had too much to drink can get home safely. Over the past seven years, the association has become a vital resource for residents, with more than 800 people transported safely last summer alone. “Monaco may be small, and you could think a service like this isn’t needed here, but unfortunately, it is. You need to call Be Safe when you’ve had too much to drink, and we will bring you home safely,” Gottlieb told Monaco Life.

Camille Gottlieb and Margaux Grundstein will be driving a Volvo C40, combining their passion for sustainable driving with their commitment to reducing drink-driving incidents. “Participating in a rally was the opportunity for us to live a new experience. Not only together, but also for the visibility of the association,” the duo said.

Team Black Sirius is led by Philippe Demanet, a seasoned rally driver and car enthusiast, who is participating for the fourth time in the event together with teammate Thierry Revel. Under his ‘They Are The Champions’ initiative, Demanet dedicates his efforts to supporting disadvantaged children in the region through exciting events such as karting. This year, however, their focus is also on boosting awareness for Be Safe Monaco, Gottlieb’s life-saving initiative.

Gottlieb and Grundstein, both first-time rally participants, are eager to face the challenge ahead. “We have known each other for years, we know how we work, and above all we have full confidence in each other,” they said.

Their ultimate goal is not only to promote Be Safe Monaco within the Principality but to expand its influence beyond Monaco’s borders. “Our goal is to one day not be needed in Monaco because people realise the danger of drink driving. But perhaps we can inspire other people to offer the service in other cities, take it city by city,” Gottlieb said.

With 63 teams competing in this year’s E-Rallye Monte-Carlo, Team Black Sirius stands out not just for their competitive spirit, but for their mission to ensure that everyone on the roads is safe, both during and after the race.

For more information on the Be Safe initiative, you can find their contact details on Instagram or save these numbers: 06 40 62 76 24 for Monaco and 06 80 86 80 51 for France.
