Introducing IUM’s Luxury Society, the student-led organisation shaping the future professionals of the industry

The Principality of Monaco, a world-renowned hub for elegance, affluence and grandeur, provides the perfect setting for the International University of Monaco’s Luxury Society, a student-led organisation that is connecting young students with industry leaders in a bid to help guide and shape their future careers in the high-end sector.

In an interview with Monaco Life‘s Niki Borisova, Valentin Della Libera, a 23-year-old from Lille and the president of the IUM Luxury Society, and Léa Lombardini, a 25-year-old from Switzerland and the society’s vice-president, share how the International University of Monaco (IUM) and this student-led concept are preparing students for careers in the luxury industry. Both are pursuing a Master’s in Luxury Management, IUM’s largest and most sought-after master’s programme, which spans 16 months and currently has more than 100 enrolled students.

Della Libera, who completed a bachelor’s degree at IUM in Luxury Hospitality and Tourism before advancing to the Master’s programme, first joined the Luxury Society as a member in September 2023, before stepping into the role of President in January 2025. Lombardini, who shares his passion for luxury, was quick to accept his invitation to join the board.

“For me, it was a no-brainer,” she says. “I wanted to be around like-minded people and in a community. There are incredible opportunities through networking events and workshops to get a foot into the industry.”

The society was originally founded by former IUM student Malena Mota, who has since graduated and now works at Chanel in Paris.

“The main mission of the Luxury Society is to connect students with luxury leaders across different sectors, such as yachting, jewellery, fashion and the automotive industry,” he explains, adding, “It’s also a great opportunity to meet professionals directly and gain firsthand insights into the industry.”

Lombardini agrees, “The goal is to create connections, not only between students and professionals but also among the students themselves.”

Industry exposure in Monaco’s luxury hub

Monaco, with its high concentration of ultra-high-net-worth individuals and established luxury brands, provides an ideal setting for students looking to build careers in the industry. The IUM Luxury Society capitalises on this environment, facilitating direct engagement with top professionals through networking events, lectures and store workshops.

The society’s opening event for the academic year, held at Buddha-Bar in October 2024, was one of its most successful gatherings.

“Around 150 people attended, including professionals who will be part of future lectures,” says Della Libera. “It was a great way to welcome new members and connect them with industry leaders in a relaxed setting.”

Beyond networking events, members can also attend industry-specific lectures.

“A few weeks ago, we hosted a lecture with the director of Audemars Piguet Monaco, who shared his expertise on the luxury watch industry,” Lombardini says.

The society is keen to further explore the luxury automotive sector too, with a lecture on Rolls-Royce scheduled for March.

In addition to lectures, members gain exclusive access to in-store experiences.

“Next, we have a private event at the Elie Saab store, where couture dresses will be flown in from Paris, allowing members to see the craftsmanship up close and learn about the design process,” Lombardini shares with Monaco Life. “Then, in March, we have a breakfast event at the Fendi boutique with the store director.”

Fashion-focused events have also been a major success. A private fashion show at the Monaco Yves Saint Laurent store drew such a large crowd that the society has since introduced quotas and ticket prices for certain events. A similar event was held recently at the local Prada boutique.

“We also no longer publicly announce dates—only members are informed—to maintain an intimate and exclusive atmosphere,” Lombardini notes.

Hospitality remains a strong focus, too.

“At the beginning of the year, we organised a lecture with Olivier Thomas, General Manager of Hôtel de Paris, which was well received by our members,” Della Libera says.

This event proved particularly valuable for him personally, as he later secured an internship at the hotel as Executive Assistant to Thomas.

“The society isn’t just about luxury in the traditional sense; hospitality is a major part of what we do,” he adds.

Meanwhile, Lombardini is keenly aware of the significance of Monaco’s location for hands-on learning.

“Monaco is the perfect place to gain hands-on experience with top industry professionals,” she says, adding, “Being here allows us to learn directly from the best in the luxury sector.“

Future aspirations and expanding the IUM Luxury Society

The IUM Luxury Society has already played a role in helping students secure internships and positions in top brands.

“We have had success,” says Lombardini. “Two members are now working in yachting, and another is at Elie Saab.”

Della Libera adds, “Some students have started internships in Monaco and then moved on to fashion capitals like Paris, Milan and Dubai.”

This is, however, one challenge linked to the society’s base in Monaco, as Della Libera explains.

“We don’t have the headquarters for luxury brands like LVMH here, but Monaco is great for networking—it brings together all sectors in one place,” he says.

There are pluses too, as Lombardini points out.

“Monaco also has the clients—people who come here expecting luxury and are ready to spend,” she notes.

Looking ahead, the society aims to collaborate with major local events like the Monaco Yacht Show and the Monaco Grand Prix. There are also plans to expand the concept beyond IUM.

“I hope to create a similar society for Monegasque residents, not just students, and organise events for people who share the same passion for luxury,” reveals Della Libera.

Both Della Libera and Lombardini will graduate in 2026, meaning leadership of the society will soon pass to a new generation.

“The president must be a student, so I’ll have to pass on the role,” says Della Libera. “I already have an idea of who it might be—he’s not at IUM yet, but he’ll start soon.”

Reflecting on her experience, Lombardini says, “One of the most memorable moments for me was meeting the store manager of Tiffany at a society event. He shared so many insights and tips, and I loved how open and engaged professionals in Monaco are with us.”

For Della Libera, a standout moment was the society’s gala in November 2024, hosted in collaboration with a local luxury hotel to raise funds for a children’s health charity.

“We had the great honour of hosting Princess Stephanie,” he says. “It was such a beautiful event.”

As the IUM Luxury Society continues to grow, it remains a key stepping stone for students hoping to enter the world of luxury.

Monaco launches art contest to design lunar vehicle of the future

Young artists and aspiring engineers in Monaco and the Alpes-Maritimes have been invited to envision the lunar vehicle of the future as part of an exciting art competition launched by Top Marques Monaco.

The contest, organised in collaboration with the Monaco Education Department, is one of several special events marking the 20th anniversary of Top Marques, the prestigious luxury automobile show taking place at the Grimaldi Forum from 7th to 11th May 2025.

Participants will be challenged to create designs for a space vehicle adapted to the extreme conditions of the Moon, where petrol stations are non-existent and the terrain is far more rugged than the smooth streets of the Principality. The initiative takes inspiration from the FLEX lunar rover, developed by Monaco-based Venturi Space, which is set to land on the Moon in 2026.

“Today, many questions are being raised about how we can evolve with vehicles that will take us to new horizons,” say the organisers of Top Marques Monaco. “We are asking the children of Monaco and the Alpes-Maritimes to propose their own designs, as we are confident that their ideas will be both innovative and inspiring.”

Entrants will compete in two age categories: one for students in CE2 to CM2 and another for those in 6ème to 3ème. The winner will receive a unique opportunity to visit the Venturi Space showroom and explore the pioneering technology behind the FLEX rover.

The competition forms part of a dynamic schedule for this year’s Top Marques event, which will showcase an impressive selection of luxury supercars, rare classic models, and high-end watches and jewellery. A retrospective exhibition celebrating the history of the show, along with the annual Carspotters Award, promises to engage visitors of all ages.

Entries for the art contest must be submitted by 18 April 2025. Further details, including submission guidelines, can be found on the Top Marques Monaco website.

Reduce, reuse, recycle: MonaCollecte returning for textile-themed weekend in March

MonaCollecte will be back for its fourth edition this March, bringing with it a renewed focus on waste collection, recycling and charitable giving. The event, which will encourage participants to give a new life to unwanted items cluttering up their closets, will feature a range of fun and informative workshops, events, and exhibits in Port Hercule on 7th and 8th March.

Guided by the vision of Prince Albert II, who believes that the concept of “waste” will be obsolete by 2050, MonaCollecte is now entering its fourth year of inspiring Monaco residents to reduce, reuse and recycle.

The Quai Antoine 1er in Port Hercule will be transformed into a hub of sustainability and eco-awareness on 7th and 8th March, from 10am to 7pm each day. Organised by the Société Monégasque d’Assainissement (SMA) and the Department of Urban Amenities, in partnership with the Monaco City Council, the event provides a drop-off point where individuals can donate unwanted goods that can be reused or responsibly recycled.

But there’s much more on offer. Attendees will also have the opportunity to take part in free exhibitions, learn from various information stands and participate in a range of workshops focused on waste management, recycling and upcycling. Activities will include a customisation workshop for clothing and accessories, a perfumed sachet-making course, an upcycling session that will turn an old t-shirt into a reusable bag, a crochet lesson workshop and an exciting escape game, which will be available every hour from 10am to 5pm on 7th March.

Workshop slots from 9am to 11am and 2pm to 4pm on 7th March will be reserved exclusively for Monaco’s primary school pupils, but outside these times, the event is open to the public. On 8th March, the event will be open to the general public all day. Places are limited, so prior registration is required to attend certain workshops.

Several charities will be on-site to collect clean, reusable donations in good condition, such as gloves, woolly hats, underwear, clothing for adults and children, polar fleeces, trainers, shoes, sleeping bags, blankets, bath towels, household linen, school supplies, toys, board games, small furniture, crockery, cutlery, small household appliances, computer equipment, books, knick-knacks and hydroalcoholic gel. Items that cannot be reused will be processed or recycled by the SMA.

Visitors may also bring in cleaning, DIY, or gardening products such as paint cans, solvents, fertilisers, insecticides, aerosols, motor oil, cooking oil, X-rays, medicines, gas bottles, mirrors, glass, light bulbs, batteries, cells, ink cartridges, and small electrical and electronic waste that is no longer in working condition to be processed safely.

MonaCollecte’s recycling service is exclusively for private individuals. Professional waste will not be accepted.

Flavio Briatore sells Twiga Monte Carlo and other venues to Italian billionaire

Former Formula 1 Team Principal and hospitality entrepreneur Flavio Briatore has sold four venues owned by his Majestas Group, including Twiga Monte Carlo, to fellow Italian businessman Leonardo Maria Del Vecchio. The deal will see three Twiga nightlife hubs and Porto Cervo’s Billionaire club-restaurant merge with the Triple Sea Food venture to form the new LMDV Hospitality group.

According to the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, the deal to sell Twiga Monte Carlo, Twiga Forte dei Marmi, Twiga Baia Beniamin and Billionaire in Porto Cervo to Leonardo Maria Del Vecchio’s new LMDV Hospitality group, first announced at the end of 2024, has now been finalised for an undisclosed sum.

Briatore appeared to confirm the news on social media, stating, “Twiga has been an icon of luxury entertainment and one of the most prestigious brands in our group. Now the time has come to entrust it to an entity capable of enhancing its future with an ambitious and structured vision. LMDV Hospitality has the potential to take Twiga to the next level while respecting its DNA and opening the door to new growth opportunities. I wish Leonardo Maria and the Triple Sea Food team a future filled with well-deserved success.”

Briatore, the man behind the Twiga brand and the Billionaire nightlife and entertainment concept, reportedly sold the venues with the aim of spending more of his time focusing on Formula 1.

Billionaire in Porto Cervo is set to be rebranded under the Twiga name at some point during 2025, while LMDV will open a fifth Twiga site in Milan on Via Turati in September. LMDV has reportedly enlisted architect Stefano Belingardi to oversee the transition and transformation of three of the venues, with the Fanti Bozzetti Menegon Studio understood to be in charge of the changes at the Forte dei Marmi address.

Corriere della Sera reports that the acquisition marks the start of a “new era” in luxury hospitality for LMDV Hospitality, in the words of its CEO Marco Talarico, who has set the goal of combining high-end dining, entertainment and lifestyle elements to create iconic destinations for a global audience and achieve €60 million in revenue by 2026.

“The acquisition of Twiga is a crucial step in LMDV Hospitality’s growth. It’s not just an investment; Twiga is more than a brand—it’s a commitment to enhancing and redefining hospitality in Italy and abroad,” said Leonardo Maria Del Vecchio, President of LMDV Hospitality, in comments to Corriere della Sera.

LMDV Hospitality is part of Leonardo Maria Del Vecchio’s LMDV Capital entity. The Italian businessman and billionaire, who is worth $6.4 billion according to Forbes, is the son of the late EssilorLuxottica founder Leonardo Del Vecchio. LMDV Capital invests across multiple asset classes around the world, including venture and growth capital, private equity and hedge funds.

Other venues making up the new group include Triple Sea Food’s Casa Fiori Chiari, Trattoria del Ciumbia and Vesta. As reported by the Italian newspaper, LMDV Capital will hold more than 80% of the newly created entity, while the Wertheimer family, the owners of Chanel and current minority stakeholders in Triple Sea Food, will decide in the coming months whether to retain their share.

AS Monaco brings club spirit to CHPG’s pediatric ward

A new mural featuring AS Monaco has been unveiled at the Princess Grace Hospital Centre’s pediatric ward, bringing a touch of sporting passion to young patients. The artwork, displayed in the ward’s entrance hall, showcases the iconic Stade Louis-II alongside the football club’s beloved mascot, Bouba, dressed in the team’s signature red and white jersey.

On Tuesday 25th February, the Princess Grace Hospital Centre (CHPG) and AS Monaco inaugurated the newly decorated reception area in the pediatric department, designed to uplift young patients during their medical journey. The ceremony was attended by CHPG Director Benoîte Rousseau de Sevelinges, General Director of AS Monaco Thiago Scuro, and forward Breel Embolo.

The reception now features a lively mural depicting AS Monaco’s mascot – Bouba the elephant, the iconic Stade Louis-II with its distinctive arches, and the club’s signature red and white diagonal jersey. The initiative aims to create a cheerful and supportive environment, easing the anxiety of children entering the hospital.

Beyond the visual enhancements, the collaboration includes AS Monaco-themed colouring activities, a special Bouba game to help children prepare calmly for surgical procedures, and the awarding of ‘Courage Diplomas’ featuring the club’s colours and mascot upon discharge. These additions complement existing support measures, such as Bouba-themed IV covers and plush toys, providing comfort throughout the children’s stay.

During the unveiling, Breel Embolo, accompanied by Bouba, met with young patients, offering gifts and presenting the first ‘Courage Diplomas’.

“The partnership of CHPG with AS Monaco is a true asset for our young patients and their parents,” said Benoîte Rousseau de Sevelinges. “Immersing children in Bouba’s world significantly reduces their anxiety, bringing joy and distraction to both children and parents. It’s now proven that enhancing the hospital experience greatly contributes to overall care; I thank the club’s teams for their attentive collaboration with ours for over five years.”

The initiative continues a longstanding collaboration between AS Monaco and CHPG, which includes distributing newborn kits and organising blood donation drives, all aimed at supporting and comforting hospitalised children.

“We are very pleased to take a new step today alongside CHPG and further strengthen the bond between our two institutions,” said Thiago Scuro. “This is an additional step that confirms the club’s commitment to its community, especially the youth, for whom, under President Rybolovlev’s guidance, AS Monaco is multiplying initiatives.”

AS Monaco Basketball secure Coupe de France semi-final spot with win over Asvel

AS Monaco Basketball have advanced to the semi-finals of the Coupe de France after a commanding 83-70 victory over Asvel. A dominant third quarter proved to be the turning point, as Monaco outscored their opponents to pull away after a tightly contested first half. The 13-point triumph highlights Monaco’s resilience following their recent disappointment in the Leaders Cup final, where they were defeated by Le Mans.

The matchup at Salle Gaston Médecin promised to be an intense battle, with Monaco and Lyon-Villeurbanne each vying for a place in the Coupe de France’s Final Four.

The first half saw both teams running neck and neck, with 23 points scored by each side in both the first and second quarters. This sent them into the locker room completely level, with the game still anyone’s to win.

After the break, the Roca Team delivered when it mattered most. American guard Jordan Loyd was in sensational form, showcasing his considerable abilities with a buzzer-beater at the end of a crucial possession. Meanwhile, Jaron Blossomgame played a pivotal role in extending Monaco’s lead to as much as 21 points.

By the final quarter, the outcome was all but decided. Monaco maintained control and secured their place in the semi-finals with an 83-70 win.

Reflecting on the game, Matthew Strazel said, “The notable difference between the first and second half was our defence. We conceded 46 points, then 24. The game was decided there. We need to stabilise and stop playing inconsistently. The president’s words reflected that. We made a misstep in the Leaders Cup, so we want to take this Coupe de France.”

Head Coach Vassilis Spanoulis remarked on the team’s resilience, saying, “We played a serious game, which was what was needed after the big disappointment of the Leaders Cup. We put in the right ingredients. Tonight, we saw the face of a team determined to achieve its goal.”

Loyd was the game’s top scorer with 23 points, followed by Strazel with 18 and Mike James with 14. Monaco now turn their attention back to the EuroLeague, preparing for a tough away fixture against Milan on 27th February.
