Irish artist Mary Ronayne unveils ‘Brief Encounters’ at YellowKorner Monaco in partnership with HOFA

After appearing at the 2023 edition of Monaco Art Week, Irish artist and storyteller Mary Ronayne has returned to Monaco with her latest exhibition, Brief Encounters, which offers a vibrant blend of satire, symbolism and vivid storytelling.

Irish artist and storyteller Mary Ronayne’s latest exhibition, Brief Encounters, was unveiled at YellowKorner in Monaco on 26th September at an event attended by Monaco Life‘s Niki Borisova. The showcase, made possible through a collaboration between YellowKorner and the HOFA (House of Fine Arts) Gallery, where Ronayne is represented, follows the success of her sold-out show in London.

Ronayne’s new collection features around 30 pieces reflecting her unique perspective on fleeting moments and storytelling through art. Her use of enamel on wooden panels, rather than traditional canvas, adds complexity to her work.

“I love exhibiting here; last year, I had the best reception, with people asking thoughtful, curious questions. I had such a good feeling about my show, so I was excited to return when a second opportunity came up,” Ronayne shared with Monaco Life.

Explaining the title of the exhibition, Ronayne told Monaco Life, “Brief Encounters is a reference to the famous movie, and I like that idea. The more you look at my paintings, the more details you uncover; much like with encounters, there’s always more going on than what meets the eye.”

The artist describes her works as puzzles for viewers to solve, each one revealing hidden layers and meanings.

The exhibition is divided into two sections: the first gallery space showcases scenes of gatherings and social settings. In contrast, the second room presents more intimate family portraits and black-and-white works that contrast with her typically vibrant style.

“Everything inspires me, from books to movies to scenes I notice while out and about,” said Ronayne.

Her process begins with digital manipulation in Photoshop, where she arranges characters and elements before bringing them to life on large-scale wooden panels. The resulting works are notable for their vibrant colours, glossy-matte contrasts, and detailed narratives.

“I want my artwork to provide viewers with a sensory overload of colour,” she added. “My style has evolved through curiosity and dedication. The most important thing is to daydream and never give up.”

Brief Encounters will be displayed at YellowKorner, located at 1 Avenue Henri Dunant, for at least a month. The exact date is yet to be decided.
