What you need to know about the 2023 Monaco Smart & Sustainable Marina event

Now is the time for interested exhibitors to register in the pre-selection process for this year’s Monaco Smart & Sustainable Marina event. 

Set to take place on 24th and 25th September, just a few days before the Monaco Yacht Show kicks off on 27th September, this year’s edition of the Monaco Smart & Sustainable Marina will unite hundreds of decision makers, business leaders, investors and designers under the roof of the Yacht Club de Monaco for two days of conferences, roundtables and networking opportunities. 

The objective is simple: to encourage innovation and investment in solutions to build the ports and marinas of tomorrow that will make them “efficient, attractive, practical and, above all, sustainable”.  

Organised by consulting firm Monaco Marina Management and supported by Crédit Suisse, MB92 Group, Xerjoff and the Yacht Club de Monaco, representatives from 20 marinas and port builders attended last year’s event as well as around 50 start-ups in the sector and numerous yacht owners and shipyards.  

Given that many of the biggest companies in the industry will likely already be in town ahead of the Monaco Yacht Show, the Monaco Smart & Sustainable Marina event is a great opportunity to meet those in the know in a more intimate setting.

Monaco to host Financial Times’ Business of Luxury Summit

The Principality of Monaco: a place where the worlds of luxury and business meet seamlessly. So where better for the Financial Times to hold its annual Business of Luxury Summit?  

Set to take place later this month, from 21st to 23rd May at a variety of locations across the Principality, the Financial Times’ Business of Luxury Summit brings together leading executives, policymakers and entrepreneurs from across the luxury sector. 

“High stakes luxury” is the tagline, an exploration of how the sector can continue to grow against a global backdrop of geopolitical and economical turmoil as well as meeting changing consumer demands and sustainability regulations is the objective.  

The future of luxury

Over the course of two days, a plethora of big names will lead keynote speeches. Chaired by the Financial Times’ Fashion Editor Lauren Indvik, the multi-purpose event will see the likes of Prada Executive Director Lorenzo Bertelli discuss sustainability issues and Chloé CEO Riccardo Bellini talk about the rebirth of the brand in a new era. Diane von Furstenberg will look back on her impressive career, whilst a panel featuring Mulberry’s Thierry Andretta, Kerling’s Marie-Claire Daveu, SYKY’s Alice Delahunt and Bernstein analyst Luca Sola will consider “The Long View” of the luxury sector. 

Topics such as watches, menswear, beauty, millennials, technology, trends and how to get shoppers back into stores will all have their place among the many conferences and roundtables, which can be experienced in-person and digitally for those not able to make the trip.  

A gala dinner at Monte-Carlo Sporting will take place on Monday 22nd May; an intimate event ideal for networking and exchange with eminent figures of the luxury world.  

Physical passes cost €4,099 while “digital delegates” can gain access to the talks as well as a networking and community area for €399.

Princess Grace Irish Library launches collaboration with NYU’s Glucksman Ireland House

The Princess Grace Irish Library and Glucksman Ireland House at New York University are embarking on a “joint literary odyssey”, starting with a lecture by a former Irish ambassador to the USA.

The Princess Grace Irish Library (PGIL) and New York University’s (NYU) Glucksman Ireland House have long shared similar visions, but it has only been recently that the two decided to join forces for what will become an annual event.

The two entities are embarking on a yearly lecture series, which will commence with the former Irish Ambassador to the USA, Daniel Mulhall, who was also a professor of Irish Studies at NYU, with the idea that they will be able to foster other synergistic collaborations.  

“We’re delighted with this collaborative venture,” says Paula Farquharson, the director of the PGIL. “It’s a natural step as Glucksman Ireland House is New York University’s centre for the study of Ireland and the Irish diaspora, renowned for its dynamic programming and research initiatives, while the Princess Grace Irish Library is a centre of literary excellence since 1984 and a hub for the Irish community in this part of Europe.” 

She adds, “This initiative allows us to deepen our connection with Irish Americans and develop our links with key writers and academics from Glucksman Ireland House. Our shared goal is to foster an appreciation of Ireland’s literature and history, which includes two exceptional women, Princess Grace of Monaco (née Kelly) and Loretta Brennan Glucksman, who serves as Chairman of the Advisory Board of Glucksman Ireland House NYU, which she endowed with her late husband, Lewis.” 

DANIEL MULHALL’S IRISH ODYESSY 

Mulhall is coming to the Princess Grace Irish Library’s 2023 cultural forum on 10th May to speak on the theme of Irish-American influence on literature, music and culture with a talk entitled “Around the World with W.B. Yeats and James Joyce: A Diplomatic Odyssey.” 

His recently published book Ulysses: A Reader’s Odyssey (2022), which came about for the 100th anniversary of the release of the James Joyce sensation, will be the centerpiece for the lecture. 

The book has garnered much attention in intellectual as well as literary circles and was lauded by Ted Smyth, the president of the Advisory Board of Glucksman Ireland House and a former diplomat, who says, “Mulhall’s deployment of Joyce and Yeats around the world is a masterly example of exercising ‘soft power’ on behalf of Ireland. Ireland might not have a large security force, but it does have an army of fabulous writers, poets, musicians, and artists who, with our talented diplomats, enable Ireland to punch above its weight in the international arena.”

Monaco International Dog Show: four paws at the ready

Fluffed and flawless pooches of all breeds will be taking over the Chapiteau de Fontvieille for the Monaco International Dog Show this weekend. 

The Monaco International Dog Show has been a staple of the spring show circuit in the Principality since 1927, when it was founded by Monaco’s Princess Charlotte.

DIAMONDS IN THE RUFF

Organised by the Société Canine de Monaco – the Monaco Kennel Club – the two-day event will see 1,180 dogs of 210 breeds from 26 countries competing in front of an international jury made up of experts from Spain, Finland, France, Britain, Ireland, Italy, Norway, the Netherlands and Serbia.

In addition to the regular competition events, the show will include several special trials for puppies, young dogs and veterans canines, as well as a category for junior handlers.

The judges will hand out prizes to each group at the end of each day, with the grand prize for Best in Show being announced at 6pm on Sunday 7th May.

TRADITIONS HANDED DOWN

The event will be chaired by Mélanie-Antoinette de Massy, the daughter of the late Baroness Elizabeth-Ann de Massy and a cousin of Prince Albert II. The Baroness held the post from 2011 until her death in 2020, and now Mélanie-Antoinette is taking up the mantle.

The Monaco International Dog Show will be held on 6th and 7th May. Entry is €12 for adults and free for children under 12. There will be food and drink on site. For more information, click here.

What’s on in Monaco this May?

Monaco is ramping up for the summer season and May will be jam-packed with fun events. Here’s some of this month’s highlights.

The Monaco e-Prix is getting the Principality’s month of exciting motorsport events going on 6th May. Organised by the Automobile Club of Monaco, this is the sixth year Monaco will be hosting the 100% electric race and the drivers will take to task 51 gruelling laps of the iconic Monaco track. Another not-to-be-missed event is the Monaco International Dog Show, which is returning to the Principality on 6th and 7th May and will feature outstanding pups of all breeds. The show welcomes nine international judges who will have the difficult job of choosing Best in Show. To find out more about Monaco’s top dogs, click here. 

For the Principality’s younger residents, Ninja Box will be hosting a day of ninja warrior activities made just for kids. Two obstacle courses will be set up at the Ninja Box: one made for children aged three to eight, and the other for those nine to 14. The event will also feature an appearance by Maurane Jélic, the winner of the most recent Ninja Warrior: Le Parcours des Héros. For more information, click here. 

Switching gears from sport to style, the Monte-Carlo Fashion Week is happening from 17th to 21st May. This edition will be showcasing talented local designers alongside some international brands who all follow an eco-friendly ethos. Inclusiveness reigns, so expect to see some fantastic pieces from emerging and established stylists as well as side experiences such as conferences, cocktail parties, pop-up events and a fashion hub. To top it all off, an awards show will also take place on 20th May to underscore the week’s style highlights. To find out more, click here. 

The Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra will host a cinema-concert on 21st May at 6pm that presents 1968’s Stanley Kubrick classic 2001: A Space Odyssey in collaboration with Warner Bros Classics, the Southbank Centre London and the British Film Institute. To be part of the experience, click here.

The legendary Monaco Grand Prix is celebrating its 80th edition from 25th to 28th May. Since 1929, this unique motorsport event has been known as one of the most difficult – and glamourous – races in the world. The finals will be held on the Sunday, with top drivers racing 78 laps and covering over 260 kilometres at top speeds. 

The 31st May will mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Prince Rainier III, Monaco’s “Builder Prince”. Celebrations will be held throughout the year, but his birthday will feature a special day of events up on the Rock from 2.30pm.

Sailing: Yacht Club members dominate Cagliari-Monaco podium

As the first yachts sailed into Monegasque waters, the Yacht Club de Monaco celebrated a solid one-two-three on the podium of the inaugural Cagliari-Monaco offshore race.  

Departing the ancient Sardinian capital of Cagliari on Monday 24th April, the various teams and vessels competing in the first ever Cagliari-Monaco offshore race were treated to four “idyllic” days of sailing as they headed 360 nautical miles up the coastlines of two of the Mediterranean’s most beautiful islands towards the Principality.

First passing Sardinia and then Corsica, it was only a matter of time before the race winner got out in front. Adamo Spinsante was Skipper aboard Yacht Club de Monaco member Adalberto Miani’s Botta Dritta. The vessel would eventually enter Monegasque waters and cross the finish line in the early hours of the morning on Thursday 27th April with a time of two days, 16 hours, 50 minutes and 46 seconds.

Close behind was another Yacht Club de Monaco member: Roberto Tamburelli on Furibonda. Behind him was Carlo Falcone on Mariella, who was also representing the club. It was an excellent result for the prestigious establishment, which is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year.  

“It’s fantastic to see Botta Dritta from Yacht Club de Monaco win this race,” said YCM General Secretary Bernard d’Alessandri. “Especially as two other club members completed the podium.” 

More to come later this year 

The race was organised by the Lega Navale Italiana de Cagliari, the Yacht Club Porto Rotondo and the Yacht Club de Monaco under the aegis of the Italian Sailing Federation and as part of the Cagliari-Montecarlo Sea Week. 

The Yacht Club de Monaco has a packed schedule of events and races this year, but the next time its offshore racers will be out again is between 22nd and 27th August for the 18th Palermo-Monaco race.
