The International University of Monaco (IUM), the Monaco Impact association and the Oceanographic Museum strengthened their collaboration by signing a partnership agreement on Monday, October 9.

“This partnership fits perfectly with the mission of the International University of Monaco,” said Jean-Philippe Muller, Director of IUM, “which is to train managers and responsible entrepreneurs committed to innovation and sustainable development, while contributing to the international reputation of Monaco.”

The aim of this union is to sensitise the younger generation to environmental themes, and in particular to the protection of the oceans.

By the end of the school year, IUM students will take part in a 2.0 educational project, aimed at proposing innovative solutions and new digital and environmental mediation tools.

Some fifty students from the Masters and Bachelor classes, divided into several working groups, will try to address the questions: How to encourage the public to adopt a code of conduct to protect our marine heritage?; How to engage generations Z to develop their knowledge about the oceans?; and How to encourage action on a daily basis?

Several working sessions and meetings will be held between the 20 pilot students participating in the project, and the management teams of the Oceanographic Museum, in particular to define the issues on which the students will be challenged.

Experts address steep fall in yacht visits

During the Monaco Yacht Show, the Monaco Yacht Club (YCM) invited yacht captains to another Captains Forum, organised in collaboration with Only Yachts.

The conference was attended by three pivotal associations: Groupement des Equipages
Professionnels du Yachting (GEPY), President Captain Jacques Conzales, Italian Yacht Master, President Captain Gino Battaglia, and Professional Yachting Association, CEO Captain Andy Crawford, and attracted over 100 people. They met to discuss the new Maritime Cruise Agreement introduced by France’s FIN (Fédération des Industries Nautiques).

Following the last Captains Forum on May 17, which was sold out, there was also a second session on France’s Decree N° 2017-307 of March 9, 2017, relating to the affiliation of seafarers – resident in France and working on a foreign-flagged vessel – to a French social security scheme, that came into force on July 1.

Since the implementation of the law, several reports suggest a steep drop in the numbers and frequency of yachts visiting the French Riviera over the past few months.

After several awareness-raising campaigns conducted by professionals, including captains’ associations in collaboration with the YCM’s Captains Club, Fabien Raffrey, Co-Director of FIN and Dominique Dubois, Head of the Maritime Affairs Department in Nice, spoke alongside Antoine Matthys, Director of the French International Register (RIF) to reassure those in the profession. They said the French government had heard them, and intended to take on board the needs expressed by the industry.

Although the decree is now in force and not suspended, it will be revised and reintroduced by summer 2018. Pending the amendments, some flexibility will be allowed in its application.

Bernard d’Alessandri, General Secretary of the Yacht Club de Monaco and President of Cluster Yachting Monaco concluded: “Ten years ago, it was unthinkable to imagine seeing all those involved in yachting around the same table, alongside the various authorities in the sector reporting directly to the government – Customs, Maritime Affairs – to discuss the issues affecting their profession. And how satisfying to see all this happening here in Monaco.” (Source: Monaco Yacht Club)

GenderHopes marks the International Day of the Girl on Wednesday, October 11, at the National Council in Monaco Ville, under a new name: She Can He Can.

After four successful years as a registered charity in Monaco, GenderHopes is changing the name of its association to She Can He Can to better reflect its new mission and objectives.

The launch will be hosted by Nathalie Amorratti-Blanc, Member of the Conseil National and President of the Commission “Women and Family Rights”. Ms Amorratti-Blanc will speak about the National Council’s commitment to celebrate the International Day of the Girl and to support local initiatives, such as She Can He Can, to support girls’ leadership.

She Can He Can aims to inspire and support girls to take leadership roles but it encourages both girls and boys to challenge deeply-held, life-limiting gender stereotypes and to realise their full potential, independent of their sex, the organisers say.

Founded by Vibeke Brask Thomsen in 2011, GenderHopes has put the International Day of the Girl on the agenda in Monaco. It has also worked since its creation to combat domestic violence by informing victims of their rights and resources.
