Princess Charlene shows off her fashion versatility at Milan Fashion Week

ALERT ALERT! Another Monaqasque royal has popped up in the front rows of Milan Fashion Week. While her niece Charlotte Casiraghi was gracing the Gucci Spring Summer 18 show in the Italian fashion capitol, aunt Her Serene Highness Princess Charlene was on the other side of town catching the Giorgio Armani show.

Back in 2011, the Italian designer was responsible for her wedding dress, which took three seamstresses and 2,500 hours to make, as well as her dress for the dinner and ball that followed. Sitting front row next to Giorgio’s niece, Roberta Armani, who is also the director of PR for the fashion house, Princess Charlene was joined by Academy Award-winning actress Cate Blanchett.

The Princess kept it neutral in a stone snakeskin trench coat, navy jumpsuit, snakeskin mules and a Giorgio Armani Ecurie bag.

Friday however the Princess was feeling a little bit more adventurous in her fashion choices.

Clearly HSH got the memo early that the Versace Spring Summer 18 show was going to be nothing less than iconic and she pulled out all the stops. Sitting front row next to F1 driver Lewis Hamilton, whom she and Prince Albert spent time with during last year’s Monaco Grand Prix, HSH took in the tribute to Gianni Versace.

In a silver chain mail dress complete with cut outs and a black leather Moto jacket, the Princess was more than happy to shatter all your expectations of how a royal should dress. Seeming to be the second act to the silver sequinned Atelier Versace jumpsuit she wore back in July at the Red Cross gala it seems Charlene + Versace is the perfect style match to get people talking.

France to tax yachts, supercars and precious metals

French President Emmanuel Macron’s abolition of the wealth tax soon after he took office was designed to stem the flow of millionaires from the country, but following a sustained outcry from his critics – who have called him “President of the rich” – his government is planning to introduce a tax on luxury yachts, supercars and precious metals in the 2018 budget.

The wealth tax was brought in by the Socialists in the 1980s, and was levied on individuals with assets above €1.3 million. Although there were plans to replace it with a real estate tax, yachts, luxury cars and jewellery were supposed to escape the levy.

“The idea of the wealth tax reform was that there should not be a brake on contributors to economic production, that we suppress taxes that deter investors,” Richard Ferrand, leader of the Republic on the Move parliamentary group, has said.

“Taxing real estate wealth is compatible with this, but goods such as yachts, luxury cars or precious metals do not contribute to the productive economy either.”

The 2018 budget bill will be studied by parliament’s finance commission this week.

Meanwhile, Tuesday, October 10, will see another national day of strike action against the President’s changes to France’s labour laws. Expect delays and cancellations for regional train service in and out of Monaco until 8 am on Wednesday, October 11.

Additionally, over this same period, there is a French air traffic control strike which will affect Nice airport. See the airport’s website for real-time flight arrivals and departures.

Organic festival this weekend in port

The Route of Goût is the annual organic foodie event celebrating popular gastronomy, biology, ecology, health, youth and sports for a charitable purpose over four days in October.

The free festival along Quai Albert Ier is organised by the Association Bio Chef Global Spirit under the High Patronage of HSH Prince Albert and chaired by Paolo Sari, the only starred chef who is certified organic in the world.

“Monaco – the symbol of wellbeing, respect for the environment, renewable energy, and biological diversity – is the perfect place to be 100 percent organic,” Mr Sari told Monaco Life. “It’s a corner between Italy and France, and the French-Italian agriculture and gastronomy share long histories. Also, we have a microclimate that allows lemon and cabbage, and avocado and mango to grow in the same soil.”

From Thursday, October 12, until Sunday, October 15, in additional to the organic farmers market, there will be many educational activities on the topic of renewable energy and protecting the planet, as well as cooking demonstrations. Parents and children are invited to become involved. Children can also take part in a tennis competition at the Monte-Carlo Country Club, and on Friday at the Monte Carlo Beach the Gala Dinner will be prepared by children with a little help from local chefs.

Saturday will have a marine flavour – dedicated to “craftsmen of the sea” – with a procession of 8 Riva boats accompanied by 8 starred chefs. The afternoon culinary competition is open to the public, but in the evening, the 8 chefs will prepare a memorable dinner consisting of 8 works of art, one dish by each chef. The first dinner ever made by 16 hands.

Money raised during the various events, from the sale of gadgets to private donations, will be donated to the reconstruction and revitalisation of the food, hospitality and educational establishments in the Italian regions hit hardest by the earthquake in 2016.

Part of the proceeds from the sale of Paolo Sari’s first book – The Bio Chef – will be for the purchase of professional equipment for the start-up of the organic hotel school in Ambavanankarana, Madagascar, and for the construction of a second building in 2018.

For a complete list of the program read here. Reservations can be made on +377 98 06 36 36 or by email: organisation@thebiochef.com

Casino’s diamond installation open to public

From Saturday, October 14, the Casino de Monte-Carlo opens to the public its “Lets Fall in Diamonds” installation in the Atrium and Rotunda.

Pascal Camia, Managing Director of Gaming of Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer, said, “Anyone entering the Casino can enjoy this new and memorable experience. Whether they are a well-seasoned player or a novice, we wanted to make it a living, surprising and memorable place.”

A creation of Belgian designer and architect Charles Kaisin, the 1400m2 exhibit is a replica of an apartment, which includes 600 remodelled pieces that have been camouflaged entirely in red and white diamond fabric, a reference to Monaco’s coat of arms, the Princely family and the gambling universe.

Mr Camia added, “Inviting Art to our gaming tables was an obvious choice. The Casino’s entrance – the Atrium – is a strategic place and a spectacular entrance into the unique universe of Gaming, Monte-Carlo style.”

The installation, open daily from 10 am and free to visit, includes a bedroom, salon, dining area, and even a bathroom. People are invited to come here to read, to take a photo, or have a drink from the bar (a glass of champagne costs a reasonable €15, a glass of wine €7, and a coke €5). Spend an afternoon trying to count how many diamonds are included in the exhibit and you could win a 2-night stay at the Hermitage.

“Ninety percent of the pieces we used came from the casino, and the rest from and SBM hotels and restaurants,” Mr Kaisin told Monaco Life. “We gave them a new life and they create joy, excitement and fear – just some of the feelings and emotions which burst forth in just a few seconds upon seeing a totally surprising area.”

Organisers explained that a fragrance designed specifically for the event will be diffused, “leaving its imprint in the visitor’s memory”, as well as a soundtrack created by one of the world’s most renowned Belgian DJs.

Mr Kaisin is also the mind behind the Surrealist Dinners, which are organised twice a year at the Casino by Société des Bains de Mer for around a hundred of their most distinguished guests. The first dinner was held on April 28, and the second, inspired by Marivaux’s play The Game of Love and Chance, will take place on 9 December, with Charles Kaisin and Franck Cerutti, Executive Chef of Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo, in the Salle Blanche of the Casino.

As Mr Camia said, “We are in the process of re-thinking this universe with a new Gaming journey, a redesigned gastronomy and entertainment offer and a new loyalty-building strategy.”

The family-friendly “Lets Fall in Diamonds” installation runs from October 14 to January 7. Open daily from 10 am.
