The closing gala dinner marking the bicentenary of the creation of the Compagnie des Carabiniers du Prince – the Prince’s Guard – was held on Friday, December 8, at the Salle des Etoiles in the presence of Prince Albert.

The Prince received imprint No 01 of the “Bicentennial Calendar” from Colonel Fringant, Superior Commander of the Police Force, in the presence of Princess Stephanie and her son, the Carabinier of first class Louis Ducruet.

Throughout the year, a series of commemorations marked the occasion, including an exhibition at the Prince’s Palace, entitled “Two centuries of history, 1817-2017” from June 13 to October 15.

The Prince’s Carabinieri Orchestra also took part in the Edinburgh Military Tattoo in August, in the presence of the Prince.

A stamp marking the bicentennial was published by the Monaco Stamp Office and a commemorative coin of two euros was minted, with 15,000 pieces.

The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation (FPA2) signed a financing agreement on November 8 with the Chinese Foundation for the Protection of the Environment for a project that culminates at the end of this month.

On Friday, December 8, FPA2 stated that a document was signed by its Vice-President, HE Bernard Fautrier, and Fu Wenjuan, President of the Chinese Foundation for the Protection of the Environment.

The objective of this recent agreement is the funding of a project investigating cyanobacterial water blooms in Taihu Lake, China’s second-largest freshwater lake.

This project involves the in-depth study of the efflorescence of cyanobacteria – the bacteria that caused the Great Oxidation 2.4 of billion years ago, making possible the evolution of living creatures – forming “flowers of water”. This phenomenon provides valuable information on the state of water pollution, and the subsequent creation of an information platform open to the general public, will constitute an educational tool as well as a working basis for scientists.

The project will end at the end of December 2017, with the submission of a survey report on the pollution of the lake.

The Monaco Yacht Club will host the official opening of the 2018 Nations Trophy Mediterranean League, from March 27-31, for the Swan One Design classes, ClubSwan 50-ClubSwan 42-Swan 45.

They will compete to conquer the first leg of a new circuit, according to clubracer.eu.

Monaco Swan One Design is offering to every competing Swan Owner a four-day programme of high-end racing and prestigious social occasions. One design racing is all about strategy, tactics, crew work, and sailing technique, since the yachts are the same design.

“We are very glad to have such an important Yacht Club as partner of our Swan One Design regattas. The Nations Trophy Med league couldn’t have a better christening,” said Leonardo Ferragamo, Nautor’s Swan Group Executive Chairman.

“Sharing timeless values with the Swan series, a subtle essence of elegance and performance, the Yacht Club de Monaco is pleased to open its doors to this prestigious class” said Bernard d’Alessandri, General Secretary of the MYC.

The Mediterranean League will continue with some classic Med rendezvous: SailRacing Palmavela, organised in early May by the RCNP in Palma de Mallorca; the Giraglia Rolex Cup, organised in mid-June by the YCI and featuring dedicated windward-leeward races off St-Tropez along with a special prize for the Offshore race; and closing in Palma de Mallorca at the beginning of August with the legendary Copa del Rey also organised by RCNP.

The prize-giving for TNT Mediterranean League will be in Porto Cervo during the 20th edition of the Rolex Swan Cup, scheduled for September 9-16, 2018.

Christmas cocktails in Monaco for Gustavia Yacht Club members, Clubhouse reopens

champagne

It has just been announced that the Clubhouse in Gustavia will reopen on December 12. However, until a few post-Irma “short-term inconveniences” can be ironed out – no air conditioning, no washing or bathroom facilities, and drinks will be served in disposable cups – opening hours will be limited to between 6 pm and 9 pm.

Meanwhile, on Monday, December 18, the Commodore is hosting a soirée in Monaco for Gustavia Yacht Club members from 6:30 pm to 9 pm.

Over Christmas drinks and canapés, the gathering is to bring together those members of the Club who have not left yet for warmer climates ahead of the holiday season and to celebrate the New Year.

Updates will be given on the preparations to open the Clubhouse in Gustavia, on the status of the IRMA disaster relief fund and the latest on reciprocal arrangements with other Yacht Clubs.

Gustavia Yacht Club also hosted a joint event with the Manhattan Yacht Club in New York on December 6, represented by Treasurer Ken Griggs and interim Club Manager Celia Meralikan, who is now in St Barts in an attempt to open the Clubhouse as early as possible.

Members who wish to attend the Monaco Christmas cocktail should contact Celia Meralikan at Gustavia Yacht Club.
