The Princess Charlene Charity Mile was won by Namajsar, a four-year old female, at Cagnes-sur-Mer racetrack on Saturday, February 24, with her trainer, Elie Lellouche, watching.

Princess Charlene could not attend the second annual race bearing her name, as she was in South Korea for the Olympic Winter Games, where Aksel Lund Svindal, Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation Ambassador, won Gold in the Men’s Downhill.

The Princess was represented at the hippodrome by her brother, Gareth Wittstock, who presented the “Prix Princesse Charlène de Monaco-Charity Mile Cup”, along with Francois Forcioli-Conti, President of the Racing Society of the Côte d’Azur, in the presence of 200 personalities, directors of corporate donors, partners, and representatives of associations.

The race, run over 1,600 metres, was for the benefit of 16 charities, with each winning between €6,000 and €2,300 depending on the placement of each horse with which the associations were linked. The draw to match the horses and the associations was held on Thursday at the Monaco Yacht Club in the presence of Mr Wittstock, and Mr Forcioli-Conti.

“I am pleased that the 2018 edition of this Charity Race, as well as the prize that bears my name, will help to protect children, people in difficulty and contribute to the welfare of animals,” the Princess said before the race.

Princess Charlene added, “My thanks go to all those who supported this wonderful initiative and I would also like to congratulate the associations present for their continued efforts.”

Many companies and donors supported this second edition of the Charity Mile and the €50,000 in prize money was divided between charitable Foundations, which included the Princess Charlene Foundation of Monaco, Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, Princess-Grace-of-Monaco Foundation, Fight Aids Monaco and M Foundation, and associations related to the horse world – Association of Jockeys of Galop, Beyond tracks, CDEAM-handi Mobile Equitation, Just World International – as well as local organisations: Lenval Foundation for Children, Monaco Red Cross, AMAPEI, Guardian Angels of Monaco, French Red Cross, CASREC, and League Against Cardiomyopathy.

On Friday, February 23, nearly 60 economic players in the Principality came to meet His Excellency Nikolaus Meyer-Landrut, Ambassador of Germany in France and Monaco, for an Ambassador’s Lunch dedicated to the economic opportunities of this flagship country of the European Union, which is also the fourth largest economy in the world.

Ambassador Meyer-Landrut highlighted the economic stability of his country and emphasised in particular the constant growth of German GDP, 2.2 percent in 2017 and a forecast of 2.4 percent in 2018, high domestic demand and a strong labour market, with high employment and dynamic earnings growth.

To support its competitiveness, however, Germany must face new challenges related to the ageing of its infrastructure and the risk of a lack of qualified manpower and rising labour costs, he said. The new coalition agreement includes major investments in R&D and innovation, education and digital transformation. In terms of finance and taxation, the goal is a balanced budget with no new debt and no tax changes.

As far as business opportunities for Monegasque entrepreneurs are concerned, they would be welcome particularly in the areas of health, urbanisation and digitisation, sectors that have a high demand for expertise and which are also of interest to Monaco.

Germany is the main partner of the Principality for exports, which amount to 15.4 percent in total. In terms of imports, Germany is in third or fourth position, depending on the year. Also important is the fact that the German community resident in the Principality totals 907 people. Two hundred and twenty-three Germans are employed in the private sector.

According to MEB President Michel Dotta, “These exchanges can still be developed, and with this in mind, the Monaco Economic Board will organise an economic mission to Frankfurt from June 12 to 14, in collaboration with the Frankfurt Chamber of Commerce, with the support of the Monaco Embassy in Germany and that of the German Embassy in Monaco.”

The Monaco Economic Board has already planned a trip to Düsseldorf in 2019 and Munich or Berlin in 2020.

The 15th edition of the Monte-Carlo Comedy Film Festival, an event founded by Ezio Greggio to present the best international comedies, starts Monday.

Australian actor and Calvin Klein model Travis Fimmel will present the Finding Steve McQueen in a world premiere on Friday.

Finding Steve McQueen is inspired by one of the biggest hold-ups in US history: in 1972 a criminal clan from Youngstown, Ohio, staged a coup to steal €24.4 million ($30 million) from a secret fund of President Richard Nixon. Fimmel plays the role of the protagonist Harry James Barber, wanted by the FBI for hold-up and conspiracy.

The Festival’s Jury will be presided by French director Claude Lelouch, who will be receive the Movie Legend Award during the closing Gala on Saturday, March 3.

Variety magazine critic Nick Vivarelli will also be part of the Jury, as well as Italian actresses Nancy Brilli and Valeria Solarino.

The six-day event takes place under the High Patronage of HSH Prince Albert and the Embassy of Italy.

Convention on blood transfusion close to fruition

A working meeting led by Minister of Social Affairs and Health, Didier Gamerdinger, was held on Friday, February 23, to strengthen cooperation in blood transfusion between the Princess Grace Hospital (CHPG) and the French Blood Establishment (EFS) PACA-Corse and to establish a formal convention.

François Hebert, Deputy Director General of the EFS, representatives of EFS PACA-Corse, and the Princess Grace Hospital took part in the meeting in Monaco.

The purpose of the Convention is the implementation of the “Agreement on cooperation in the field of blood transfusion between the Principality of Monaco and the Government of the French Republic” signed on July 13, 2017. This will allow the CHPG Blood Transfusion Centre to draw on the supplies of the EFS, particularly for the preparation of Liable Blood Products and their distribution in Monaco, which responds to very strict standards.

The Principality will maintain its participation in the blood donation effort as blood collections will continue to be provided by the CHPG Blood Transfusion Centre. Indeed, there is a tradition, a history and a strong attachment of the Principality to the donation of blood, through the Prince’s Government, the Amicale of Blood Donors and the Monaco Red Cross.

The discussions at the meeting were extremely constructive and the draft Convention is expected to come to fruition shortly.
