Golovin lifts lid on Henry’s time as manager of AS Monaco

Thierry Henry struggled with the stress of his first major league management role, according to AS Monaco player Aleksandr Golovin.

The midfielder was speaking in an interview with KpaCaba, in which he revealed that, throughout his  short tenure Henry would often shout at players.

“Maybe Henry didn’t kill the role of the player inside of him,” he told KpaCaba. “When things weren’t working out during practice, he would get nervous and yell a lot. Maybe it was unnecessary.

“He was a very strong player, and the only players near his level at Monaco are maybe Falcao and Fabregas.

“He would try to go out on to the field and show us how to practice and yell.”

The Frenchman replaced Leonardo Jardim as the Ligue 1 side’s boss in October 2018, while Monaco was languishing in the relegation zone, but he lasted just 104 days in the job before Jardim returned with the club in 19th position.

Henry led Monaco to just two wins from 12 league games before he was sacked in January, and Russia international Golovin said his nerves were noticeable on the training ground.

“Maybe a different manager would say, ‘Let’s go, get it together’, but he would get nervous right away and run onto the field and start playing and showing us things.

“You could tell he (Henry) didn’t fully transition into the role of manager.”

Ten straight wins for Monaco’s Roca Team

Basketball Roca Boys

The Roca Team is going from strength to strength, having registered a tenth win in a row in the Jeep Elite Basketball league against Dijon (84-81).

The team delivered a win in a tough-fought match, and in an arena where Strasbourg, ASVEL, and Limoges have all lost matches in recent weeks.

Suffering a 10-0 run by the home team from tipoff and pushed into an uncomfortable come from behind situation, Sasa Obradovic’s men hit hard in crunch time to turn the game on its head after trailing behind for the entire game.

ASM overcame strong defensive actions by Dijon to dominate the second half. The home side led by as many as 16 points at half-time (37-21). But the Roca Team did not roll over.

On the contrary, the Monegasque side dominated in the second period, levelling the score and leaping past their opponents with a thrilling push.

The principality club also saw Fàbregas go off injured with an apparent calf problem inside 14 minutes, with Jean-Eudes Aholou taking his place.

Both sides hit the woodwork in the match. The 0-0 draw means Monaco is still seven points clear of the relegation zone with several matches to go.

The team has not yet lost a match since manager Jardim returned to the club to take over the reigns from the embattled Thierry Henry.

The results are in for Monaco ClubSwan One Design events

Monaco Swan One design 2019

With no races on the final day of the Monaco Swan One Design event, because of lack of wind, the standings from previous days carried forward to final positions.

Leonardo Ferragamo’s Italian entry, Cuordileone, won in ClubSwan 50, Luis Senis’ Spanish team on Porron IX took home the Swan 45 prize and Lorenzo Mondo’s Far Star from Italy carried top spot in ClubSwan 42.

In the battle for The Nations Trophy, Cuordileone and Andrea Masi’s ClubSwan 50 Ulika combined to give victory to Italy.

Ferragamo’s team, with Ken Read in the tactician’s role, scored two seconds and one third, beating Ulika by two points, despite Masi’s crew winning one of the three races. Skorpios, another race winner, was a further three points behind, the Russian crew’s otherwise impeccable scoreline let down by an uncharacteristically bad result in race two of the series.

Swan 45

Porron IX is the defending world champion in the Swan 45. Across three races, the team once again proved its class. Hugo Rocha, the Portuguese 1996 Olympic bronze medallist from the 470 class, stepped into the tactician’s shoes due to a clash in the calendar for the regular role-player.

It was not straight-forward given the conditions, but Rocha believes the boat-handling skills of the Porron crew made all the difference.

“We have a very similar speed to the other Swan 45s, but in the manoeuvres these guys are very strong,” advises Rocha.

“We win on small details. The races are very close and the points difference at the end of the event is often close too. The team has been together for two years. They know the boat. The communication is solid. It makes it easy for me to just concentrate on my job.”

ClubSwan 42

Lorenzo Mondo and Far Star won at the Monaco Swan One Design in 2018, and winning again brought a smile to Mondo’s face.

Three wins from three left the other boats in class clutching at straws, but Mondo was gracious in victory.

“It was not the big challenge we hoped for, but we are very happy to win here,” he said.

“We expect in Scarlino the challenge will be much greater. There will be more boats and more fun. Maybe the wind will be more generous too!”
