Sport concussion conference: increased awareness and early detection is vital

The Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation has brought together experts, sports clubs and federations for a conference on concussions in sport, raising awareness and looking at the latest medical advancements in this field.

More than 50 people gathered for this first conference at the Meridien Beach Plaza on 13th October. The Foundation, alongside its partners in the medical sector, wanted to strengthen the sharing of information on concussions and microtraumas in the sports world, the treatment of which is crucial.

The event featured expert speakers in the subject of concussions including Dr. Nicolas Capet, Neurologist at the Princess Grace Hospital Centre (CHPG), Dr. Yann-Erick Claessens, Doctor and Head of the Emergency Department at the CHPG, Dr. Renaud David, Psychiatrist at the Center Hospitalier Universitaire de Nice and expert for the French Football Federation, the National Rugby League and the Federation of Combat Sports and Martial Arts, and Prof. Pierre Fremont, Professor in the Department of Rehabilitation at the Faculty of Medicine, Laval University in Quebec. As a clinician and researcher, he has developed extensive expertise in implementation issues related to concussion prevention, detection and management in settings ranging from youth developmental sport to international competition.

A number of representatives from sports entities, such as clubs and associations, came to listen to their expert opinions.

Professor Pierre Fremont, a recognised specialist in Canada and around the world, insisted on the need for prevention and detection among young sports people, especially those engaging in contact sports.

For Dr. Nicolas Capet, “it is important to emphasise that concussions are frequent events in the lives of athletes exposed to contact, but they rapidly develop favourably in the vast majority of cases if their care is organised. The optimal management of these seemingly innocuous traumas is based on a specific multidisciplinary care system but also on the information and training of sports educators, school teaching teams and parents from early childhood.”

Through the Sport and Education program, the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation works to relay the positive values of sport and to promote health through sport. For several years, the Foundation has also supported initiatives related to concussions, in particular with the British association Love of the Game, which funds the research and development of solutions to help in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of concussions and related issues.

Prince Pierre of Monaco Foundation award winners announced

A rendition of The Star Spangled Banner, performed in sign language during the 2020 Super Bowl, has won Christine Sun Kim the top prize in this year’s Prince Pierre of Monaco Foundation awards.

The winners of the 2022 edition of the Prince Pierre Foundation Prizes were announced during a Proclamation Ceremony which took place on Tuesday 11th October at the Opéra Garnier in Monaco, in the presence of Foundation President Caroline, Princess of Hanover. The International Prize for Contemporary Art was awarded to Christine Sun Kim for her work The Star-Spangled Banner (2020), while DAAR was awarded the Research Grant.

The Star-Spangled Banner was screened during the ceremony and will be presented at Casa Encendida in Madrid from 10th November to 26th February 2023, alongside two other works by the artist. The Foundation will present this exhibition at the International Contemporary Art Fair (ARCO).

Awarded for the first time in 1965, the International Prize for Contemporary Art (PIAC) has been organised since 1983 by the Prince Pierre of Monaco Foundation. From 2005, it’s been awarded every three years, chosen by the Artistic Council on the proposals of international experts from the art world.

The winner is awarded a sum of €75,000, including the possible financing of the production of an original work.

For the 2022 edition of PIAC, each member of the Artistic Council asked three international experts to present a piece created over the past two years and considered to be the most accomplished and the most representative of the work of an artist.

Artist David Horvitz proposed the work of Christine Sun Kim. It is a performance of her interpretation of the United States national anthem in American Sign Language (ASL) during the Super Bowl 2020 in front of millions of viewers.

“I am pleased to nominate The Star-Spangled Banner for the International Prize for Contemporary Art,” David Horvitz said. “The work synthesises multiple aspects of her practice (her voice). It is at the intersection of the different platforms through which it spreads and grows. The work is both a drawing and a translation from English to ASL. It is a document, a reference.”

According to Artistic Director of PIAC Cristiano Raimondo, “Kim builds a work where signs, gestures and their signifiers are constantly enriched, offering a bridge between the world of the hearing and that of the deaf, and this through the construction of an artistic language which goes from the sign to the graphic and from the graphic to the representation of the music. A musical note cannot be entirely contained and expressed on paper and the same goes for a concept translated by ASL: both are spatialised and modulated, so that the slightest change can modify their meaning.”

In addition, for the first time this year, a Research Grant was awarded. It supports an artist, an institution, a collective, or an art historian in their research work, in progress or to come, in connection with the Mediterranean Basin. The Prize was awarded to DAAR – Decolonising Architecture Art Research.

The artistic practice of DAAR – made up of Sandi Hilal and Alessandro Petti – is situated between architecture, art, pedagogy and politics. Over the past two decades, they have developed a series of research projects that are both theoretically ambitious and concretely committed to the struggle for justice and equality.

During the awards ceremony, Vénus Khoury-Ghata was awarded the literary grand prize. The Bourse de la Découverte prize was awarded to Thomas Louis for his first novel Les Chiens de faïence, published by La Martinière. The high school students’ favorite was awarded to Marie Vingtras, for her first novel Blizzard, published by Olivier.

The Coup de Coeur des Jeunes Mélomanes was awarded to York Höller for his work Viola Concerto (2016-2017) and the Musical Springboard to the Kyiv Symphony Orchestra.

The Principality Prize, awarded jointly by the Philosophical Meetings and the Prince Pierre of Monaco Foundation, was awarded to Philippe Descola, for all of his work.

Monaco Cyber Security and Thales announce new partnership

Les Assises, the cyber security event at the Grimaldi Forum, has produced a new collaboration between Monaco Cyber Security and French firm Thales, boosting the rapid response capabilities of the government and local businesses.

Cybercrime is on the rise and it shows no sign of abating. Studies reveal that up to 88% of organisations around the globe suffered phishing attempts in 2020, and data breaches by unprepared companies and individuals affect billions of consumers.

In the Principality, threats to data occur on a regular basis, and in response, Monaco Cyber Security (MCS) was born to support businesses by increasing their defences against new and increasingly sophisticated cyber-attacks.

Now they are joining forces with Thales, a global leader in cybersecurity and data protection, giving Monaco and other Europe-based companies stronger tools to fight threats.

MCS has recently expanded and built a new security operations centre as well as a computer security incident response team, to which Thales will now add the expertise and capabilities of its own rapid response team, which was given accreditation as a “security incident resonse provider (PRIS) by France’s national agency for information system security, ANSSI.

“Thales is proud to announce this flagship partnership with Monaco Cyber Sécurité, which will bring the very best in cyber incident response to customers in the Principality and beyond,” said Pierre-Yves Jolivet, Vice-President, Cyber Defence Solutions at Thales. “By pooling our expertise and shortening response times, we will provide businesses and government organisations with the capabilities they need.”

“Monaco Cyber Security welcomes this major partnership with Thales, which will allow us to expand our services across the board – from consultancy and prevention, through to incident detection, response and remediation. Our independence and agility perfectly complement Thales’s strength and experience as a world leader in the industry,” adds Anthony Boira, Chief Executive Officer of Monaco Cyber Security.

The united entities will seek out indicators of compromise and employs digital forensics techniques to help address and resolve security incidents, providing an end-to-end solution for organizations looking to bolster their cyber defences and keep response times to a minimum.

Roca Team defeat reigning Euroleague champions

AS Monaco Basketball defeated reigning Euroleague champions Anadolu Efes (95-92) in the first European match hosted at the new-look Salle Gaston Médecin. Sasa Obradovic’s side remain unbeaten this season.

The Roca Team’s first true test of the season awaited them on Thursday night. As expected, they have begun the Betclic Elite season in imperious form, looking largely untroubled so far as they sit atop the table. In their first Euroleague match, they visited Virtus Bologna, where Obradovic’s men were expected to win against a side that were making their long-awaited return to the upper echelons of the European game.

However, against Anadolu Efes, the result was far from guaranteed. The Turkish visitors quickly gained control of the tie, racing into an eight-point lead in the early stages.

Whilst the Roca Team of yesteryear may have folded, this season they rose to the challenge, few more so than Alpha Diallo (15) and Donta Hall (9), the latter lighting up the hall with his trademark dunks.

But neither side could make the break. Both sides displayed excellent collective qualities, whilst the strengths of the individuals were well pronounced in what Obradovic labeled post-match as “a beautiful promotion of basketball.”

As is often the case, Mike James (19) was integral for Monaco on the night, finishing as Monaco’s top scorer. However, this was Diallo’s night, his 15 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists were critical in keeping Monaco level pegging.

The sides couldn’t be separated in normal time with the first match of the Euroleague season at the Salle Gaston Médecin going to overtime. Monaco quickly made the break before being pegged back (88-88). The heroes on the night, James and Diallo made the decisive contribution at the death to give Obradovic’s side the win in what was an intense, draining and suspenseful fixture.

Post-match, Obradovic was full of praise for both sides: “Firstly I want to congratulate my team, but also the opponent. It was a great battle, worthy of a play-off match in its intensity. For sure, winning in this way shows that we can be competitive against anybody.”

Whilst many of Monaco’s rivals are yet to play their second game, the Principality side currently sit pretty at the top of the Euroleague table. Their two performances so far have been a strong statement of intent as they look to build on last season’s success.
