The NMNM (Nouveau Musée National de Monaco) and UBS Monaco have renewed their partnership, continuing a collaboration that has lasted for five years.

Agnes Falco, Managing Director, General Manager of UBS (Monaco) SA, said: “As an economic actor of Monaco for more than 60 years, it is our responsibility to make a lasting commitment to develop the attractiveness of the market by investing both in the development of our offers and services and in supporting Contemporary Art is part of the DNA of the UBS brand.

Ms Falco added, “This partnership with the NMNM reflects our deep desire to actively participate in the cultural development of the Principality, by allowing the Museum to perfect its collection and to be able to offer an exhibition programme within Villa Paloma and Villa Sauber throughout the year.”

Welcoming the renewal of the bank’s support, Marie-Claude Beaud, Director of the New National Museum of Monaco, commented: “From the beginning of our partnership and to this day, we have been fortunate to have support and understanding of a rare philanthropic quality in relation to our needs and requests.

Thanks to UBS, for the year 2018 and those to come, we will be able to continue our research and carry out a complete programme of amazing and original exhibition projects.”

Among the highlights of the 2018 programme, the NMNM will present an exhibition of ten recent acquisitions that have integrated the Museum’s collections with the support of UBS. The artists honoured in this first instalment are Matti Braun, Natalie du Pasquier, Francesco Gennari, Apostolos Georgiou, Jef Geys, Joao Maria Gusmao plus Pedro Paiva, Jean-Michel Sanejouand and Daniel Steegmann Mangrane.

From the beginning, the NMNM, with the support of UBS, has been able to develop important exhibitions and publications but also to acquire works of art. Several projects were also able to be realised in collaboration with the presentation of works from the UBS Art Collection starting with Ed Ruscha’s works on paper in 2013, in the Table of Contents of Villa Paloma, a series highlighting a work by an artist honoured John Baldessari in 2014 and Thomas Struth in 2016.

The same year at the NMNM an exhibition by Thomas Demand connected the works of the collection of the UBS Art Collection Museum, and an off-the-wall project was embodied by the immersive installation “cloak” by the British artist Mike Nelson in the Monegasque headquarters of UBS Avenue of Great Britain, then in the process of renovation.

The Prince’s Government continues to make available the information necessary for the transition to greener energy in the Principality.

While work continues on the Energy Transition White Paper following the launch of the solar cadastral map in June, the Department of Public Works, Environment and Urban Development has also put online a site dedicated to energy transition.

The website, in French and English, addresses questions about LEDs, the subsidy scheme for solar panels and thermal regulation. Information documents for the general public, adapted to the specificities of the Principality, have been published and will regularly be enriched with new topics, the Government says.

The handover took place on December 13 between the outgoing Presidency and the incoming Presidency of the Pelages Agreement, provided by Monaco in the person of Cyril Gomez, Director General of the Department of Public Works, Environment and Urban Development.

Cyril Gomez, Head of the Monegasque delegation, succeeded HE Xavier Sticker, Head of the French delegation, and will hold the Presidency for the next two years.

The objective of the Pelagos Agreement is to protect marine mammals and their habitats from any threat of human origin. The Sanctuary is a maritime area of 87,500 square kilometres and represents the largest marine protected area in the Mediterranean and the only international marine area dedicated to the protection of marine mammals.

A recently formed association, known as AMLA – Association Monegasque pour l’Amerique Latine – will be holding a Santa’s Christmas tree workshop for children from two to eight years old on Tuesday, December 19.

“The association came to life three months ago, organised by five young women from Venezuela, Bolivia, Cuba, Guatemala and Colombia, all with strong Latin American roots, while being very international and Monaco locals at the same time,” Daniela Spanier, the association’s President said.

“After living several years in Monaco we have become fans of its openness towards different cultures and subjects, its warm hearted-communities and its very dynamic and wide range of cultural offerings.

“Latin America is a very diverse and culturally rich area, where dance, music and food as well as social interdependence play a fundamental role in creating a unanimous identification with the area.”

Ms Spanier describes “Latinos” as having a reputation for being cheerful, friendly, active and a outgoing and very well educated – even though there are very high levels of illiteracy – which has given rise to thousands of renowned artists, musicians, entrepreneurs, as well as its gastronomy.

“It is here where we see our mission, as a point of reference between the principality of Monaco and the countries of Latin America. We will promote sociocultural exchange and rapprochement between both and identify synergies to build on, through several events during the year, such as expositions, conferences, concerts, gala evenings, day activities to name some examples, always with the goal of cooperation and exchange.”

Funds raised by the association will be put to use in key areas in our countries, such as health, infrastructure and education and partnerships with local and international charity authorities.

The tree workshop will run from 4 pm until 6:30 pm at Twiga, with a charitable donation requested of €35, which includes the workshop, goodie bags, Santa’s visit, snacks and drinks for all, plus singing and dancing. All the funds raised will go to Richmond Global Health Alliance, a health project for Nicaragua’s children.

Monaco Explorations and the Principality’s initiatives for the oceans have been in the spotlight at the UN. Isabelle Rosabrunetto, Director General of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, accompanied by Marie-Catherine Caruso-Ravera, Director of Diplomatic and Consular Relations, visited the United States, from December 4 to 8, to make working visits to the various Monaco Diplomatic and Consular Missions.

In New York, she delivered an important speech to the UN General Assembly during the debate on oceans and the law of the sea.

Her address was an opportunity to recall Monaco’s priorities, such as the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14, ocean acidification, marine protected areas, the fight against marine pollution as well as the Principality’s support for hydrography and marine cartography.

The importance of marine science and scientific collaboration was also at the heart of the Director General’s speech, citing as examples the Yersin’s ports of call in Madeira, Cape Verde and Martinique, in accordance with the vision of SAS the Sovereign Prince to “reconcile humanity and the sea.”

The Principality also supports the initiative of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission to proclaim a Decade of Ocean Sciences from 2021 to 2030. Two draft resolutions of the General Assembly on oceans and the law of the sea in general and on the sustainability of fisheries were adopted at the end of the debate.

By the end of the year, the General Assembly is expected to adopt a third resolution to convene an Intergovernmental Conference to develop a new International Instrument for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biodiversity.

The Government has pointed out that Monaco has not appeared on any of the three lists of problematic fiscal jurisdictions as published by the Council of Europe on Tuesday, December 5. A total of 92 jurisdictions were listed.

Monaco was recognised as “largely compliant” in terms of transparency four years ago, at the World Forum of the OCDE held in Jakarta. Furthermore, Monaco’s economic model is “onshore”, the Monaco government said in its statement published on Wednesday, December 6. What makes the Principality rich is the wealth of its residents, who live and consume in Monaco, plus the VAT revenues produced in accordance with an agreement with France.

From May 17, 2016, Monaco has applied the necessary measures to combat the erosion of the tax base and transfer of profits, the statement said, adding, “The Government states with satisfaction the recognition of the work so far accomplished and will pursue future actions to maintain its conformity to international standards in these matters.”
